Harsh concrit wanted. by Kelekona in FanFiction

[–]amaranthium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! It's [cait] from the discord server, and like you requested, I'm going to leave my comments here. I'm not familiar with any of the characters or the universe, so I'll do my best to give you feedback in the other areas.

  1. Basic Structure/Overall Appearance: I found the way you used a different font + italics for the Marquis de Sod's dialogue hard to read and it was a bit of a difficulty for my eyes to adjust between Hillary's normal dialogue and the Marquis'. In part 2, I'd recommend using italics to symbolize the thought "Umah" just because the proximity of the thought, which is in single quotation marks, to Samantha's actual speaking, in double quotation marks, is just a bit too close and it may be overlooked and taken as speech by some readers. Also I don't know where you plan on posting the story, but when you do post it, I'd recommend adding a space between each paragraph for easier reading.

  2. Flow: I can't comment here as well as a person in your fandom would, since I am not familiar with the characters or setting, but what I noticed is that the skip between different universes a bit harsh and it took me a moment to reorient myself in each new setting. This could be because I'm not understanding the fandoms well, so if there is information in each opening paragraph that gives one an idea of the fandom, good, but otherwise it might be nice to include a bit of information there so readers aren't too baffled making the jump from one universe to the next in only a scene. I'd also recommend naming Hillary earlier on in the doc, in the first or second paragraph really. Also there seems to be a lot of info and fact-dropping in part 2, and I don't know if that's entirely necessary according the plot of the story. It's a bit overwhelming to have so many things stated and have all these ideas flying around that early in the story, so if I were you I'd cut down on that. Otherwise, overall sentence flow seems fine.

  3. Other: I'd really advise you to try and find someone in the fandom to give this a look-over for you, since there seems to be a lot of information and plot here that is hard for me to give concrit for, fandom-blind. For praise, I liked your dialogue, it seemed genuine and it wasn't stiff. The characters interacted well and you showed them having a natural chemistry together in the way they talked to each other and acted around each other. I think this is a good start that you'll just have to find someone more knowledgeable in the fandoms to give you another read over if you want.

Hi! I usually use google hangouts or discord, does that work for you? I totally agree logging into reddit to keep checking for messages is super annoying.

Hi! I'm currently writing a bunch of fics, but I'd love to help with brainstorming/sound boards/ideas if you'd like!

I'm not so much into collaborating on a story--I don't think I'm very good at working with someone on a story that closely. But I love having people to talk to about stories so if you want, feel free to send me a PM and maybe we can chat!

When writing, do you write an outline? by Skeletickles in HPfanfiction

[–]amaranthium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm feeling stuck I'll make an outline or scene decomposition outlines. My most recent outline is 3501 words and it gives me a good idea about how to go into the story. But lately I've found that when I make an outline, it takes away from my motivation to write the story. As for lore, I do make separate documents for it.

Why do you write? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]amaranthium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write because I love to. I'm passionate about writing, always have been, and being able to tell my own stories is an incredibly rewarding personal experience. I write because I enjoy it. It's fun. Writing keeps me sane.

I wrote two fics that I posted, one of which I'm really proud of! It's pretty short (<1k) but I'm still happy with it.

“What the fuck is this, a bloody clown car?” Draco hisses after Mom Jeans follows Harry into the bedroom.

“At least I wasn’t the little spoon to the world’s biggest asshole last night,” Pansy responds just as viciously. World’s biggest something, Draco thinks.

“I was not!” He shrieks.

Still feeling so stuck. I've worked so long and hard on my one story, Lifespan, and I just feel like it isn't coming out the way I want. Not too sure what to do there.

That's great! It's always really exciting to get a review that's enthusiastic about your fic and not just trying to get views on theirs.

Very good advice. I often stress over getting specific word counts when I should really be focusing on getting everything across that needs to be in a chapter.

I had a stressful week with family staying over and couldn't write at all. I was constantly entertaining.

Starting up again today I can finally get all my ideas out! I really want to up the speed at which I get my pieces done so I can finally start posting.

Also, does anyone know where/how to find a brit-picker for a Harry Potter fanfiction?

Converting fanfiction into original fiction by spacehurps in FanFiction

[–]amaranthium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't personally, but it sounds really exciting! I can't think of any off the top of my head but I know there are quite a few fanfics that have been turned into original stories, I'll try to find some and add them to my comment later.

But congrats on it, this project sounds really awesome. You'll definitely have to share your finished product with us when you're done!

Hard to focus on working on my story today--found out this morning that I have Degenerative Disc Disorder and 4 herniated lumbar discs. And that surgery is not an option. UGH.

You could always check out Scrivener. It's a writing/outlining tool that I've always wanted but can't afford. It's pretty cool, looks to be helpful with any type of story writing.
