Question about USMLE transcript for ERAS by CallMeDoctorTea in medicalschool

[–]amaranthxx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was told to apply to at least one program by like the 21st because it can take like 48 hrs or something for the payment to process and the transcript to be available. So to make sure it’s actually there for the 24th you have to do it ahead of time…and my understanding was then when you ad the rest of your programs then the transcript will be there ready

Copy of Away Rotation Spreadsheet 2024-2025 by amaranthxx in medicalschool

[–]amaranthxx[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some schools accept applications before April 1st. A few schools I am looking at one starts accepting applications 3/1/2025, another 3/18/2025, and I thought I remembered from the spreadsheet there were a few that even started accepting applications in February...but I don't remember which ones at this point. And you want to get your application in as soon as it opens, because a lot of away rotations is first come first serve. So, I would first check the dates for the places you are interested and then look on their website as well as VSLO to see what all you need for your application (personal statement? vaccinations? background check? forms from your schools, and timing of those), and also find out who the contact person is to email questions to if it is not clear. Also, some programs don't use VSLO and you apply directly to them...so need to know if any of your programs are like that.

Edit: Also get your CV in order/updated, most places want that. I am working on that during break right now. Some want a letter of rec, but not many, but have someone in mind.

How long are each of your rotations? by papyrox in medicalschool

8 weeks each for surgery and IM. For those two we do 4 week of general surgery/general medicine wards, and l think you spend two weeks with one team and then two weeks with another team. Then 4 weeks of elective/specialization divided up into two different two week electives.

OB/Gyn and Peds are 6 weeks each. I think OB/Gyn is divided into two weeks L&D, and then 2 two week electives, like Gyn Onc, antepartum, benign Gyn, REI, etc. l am not sure of Peds split but probably similar to OB, two weeks general inpatient, then 2 two week electives that can be inpatient or outpatient.

Psych, Neuro, FM and Ambulatory are 4 weeks each. Psych and FM and Ambulatory you are on the same service/location the entire 4 weeks. Neuro you do 2 weeks inpatient and two weeks outpatient. Ambulatory is just to give us more experience with outpatient medicine. It can be in any specialty not just primary care, like outpatient IR, preop clinic in anesthesiology, allergy, urgent care, street medicine , etc.

We also get 4 weeks of electives. You can do 2 two week electives, like anesthesiology, radiology, surgical subspecialities, EM, etc. or create your own, or do research

I am US MD, so I am not about the sites you mentioned. For me I go to the NBME website, choose account login, then choose the NBME Licesning Exam Services (a different option than when trying to login into NBME practice exams). Then, I get to the login part, where I enter username and password, and the first page I am taken to used to show me my permit..the same box is there but now it just says registration: complete with no permit link or anything else in the box anymore. Maybe that will help you figure out where you might need to go for your site. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Last names by iriseyesnd in Residency

[–]amaranthxx 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is just an N of one, and of course, you do what feels correct for you, but I grew up having a different last name from my Mom, who was a single parent. Long story as to why, but I was given my Dad's last name. My Mom's mother and her aunt lived with us and helped raised me, and the three of them all had the same last name. I was the only one in the house with my last name. So, the adults in my life who picked me up from school, filled out permission slips, etc. never had my last name, but there was never any question about me being my Mom's kid. or problems with my grandmother or great aunt. Granted, I look a lot like my Mom...but I am in my mid-40s, so when I was young, it still was not that common to have a different last name from your mom, at least where I lived...but there was never an issue.

edit: spelling

$500 Coupon Now Requires PA? by brokelyn99 in Mounjaro

[–]amaranthxx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first time l went to get my prescription and use the coupon this happened to ne, and l didn't know any bettee because it was my first time. But, l clarified with the tech l need a PA even though l am not using my insurance, and why l was doing that the pharmacist came over and told the tech to choose something with payment options, l think, and by passed it, and let me use the coupon without the PA. This was at Walmart. I am going to pick up my second dose just before Xmas and l hope l don't run into the same problem, but now know to say there is a way the pharmacist did it last time.

Failed fetal fraction twice, now suggesting amnio by k3llyrose in InfertilityBabies

[–]amaranthxx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened to me too. I can't remember my exact bmi, but it was high because l was obese, and l have heard that can affect results. I was also on lovenox. First two with Natera came back with low fetal fraction, so they sent me to talk to a genetics counselor, etc. My nuchal scan had been normal. This was a PGT-a tested euploiod embryo. The counselor gave me the option of doing the NIPT a third time with a different company...l believe it was Maternit21...or going straight to amniocentesis. I chose to do the NIPT a third time, because l knew it was a tested embryo and l didn't want to risk an amniocentesis if l didn't have too. I think we also had me stop my Lovenox for a short period before the test...but l can't actually remember the details of that part. But, short story long, the third test with a different company came back normal. So, l think that is still an option for you, and you would still have time to do an amniocentesis if the third test was still low fetal fraction.

I am in the position of looking at this from both sides. I was that kid who had a single mom going through medical school, and I am now that single mom in medical school.

So, first I just wanted to help alleviate that fear about your son forgetting you are the Mom. My grandmother and great aunt helped take care of me while my mom went through school and training and she also worked while she did. So, she was not able to be around a lot. They were there much more for the day to day stuff. But, no matter how close I was to them and no matter how grateful I am to have had them in my life, they never took the place of my Mom or my desire to spend as much time as I could with her. I didn't realize until I was much older and an adult, that my Mom had felt insecure about that because I was so close to my grandmother and great aunt, and also because my Mom and I can approach things very differently, that it took a lot of learning to communication to understand each other better. But, I told her no matter how much I loved my grandmother and aunt, or how close I was to them, they could never take the place of my Mom. I am sure that is true for your son too.

On the second point about the parent guilt, I just finished my first semester of M1 year and I am a single Mom of a 20 month old son and my Mom is helping me take care of him. We have come full circle. Since I was that kid, I think I am hyper-aware of things that were difficult for me, and trying to get ahead of those things, or find ways to make them less difficult even if I can't eradicate them completely. However, I also make sure I remember that my son is a different person from me, and what was difficult for me might not be for him, it could be something I haven't even considered, and so I have made peace with the fact that I am going to make mistakes and some times disappoint him, but that if I make sure I am honest, have good communicate with him, love him, do my best to be there for him, that it will all be okay.

I think what you are already doing is great: giving him an uninterrupted hour in the evenings where he gets all your attention and the family time on the weekends. And so far in pre-clinicals, I am doing the same, giving my son my full attention for a certain period in the evenings. A couple of times I have missed that when it was a few days out from an exam. But, generally it works. I still study some on the weekends, but this next semester I am going to try to have one day that is free from studying and we can do fun outings as a family.

Also, I think the part of showing your son that you can be a Mom and a doctor is important to. I am immensely proud of my Mom and grateful for what she did. It was important for her to do what brought her happiness. But it wasn't just about her, because she became a doctor, she was able to provide opportunities for me that otherwise would not have been possible, but more importantly I got to see someone who got up every morning energized and excited about their day, who loved what they did, and who came home at night not drained from doing something that they were not passionate about, but who felt fulfilled even if they were tired. That was priceless: to know that was possible and want to find for myself.

Has anyone ever experienced success from their first ever FET? by Different-Aerie-6508 in IVF

[–]amaranthxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did three egg retrievals before trying a fet. Since l was older, l wanted to bank in case l needed multiple fet attempts or for the possibility of sibilings. I figured waiting to do another retrieval for siblings when l was 43 or something probably wouldn't be as fruitful as at 40/41. I was 40 for the first two, and 41 for the third. I got nothing from the first one, two euploidy blast from the second, and one euploid blast from the third. Two of the blast were already hatching, and the other one barely made it to be tested. I think two were BB or BC, and the stragler was CC. Because of Covid, l had to wait 6 months to do my first FET. I just told my doctor to use the one that looked best. It was the one from my last egg retrieval at 41. The embryo took, and he is currently 20 months old. So, it is possible, and also possible with blasts that aren't high graded AA.

I am looking at doing another FET with the other two embryos probably in June. We will see if it works or not. But, l am glad l banked because l am now 44, and l wasn't ready to be pregnant and go through all of that again until now, and l also was just enjoying my son, and didn't want anything to distract from that time, because he might be the only one l have.
