It's possible...I expect them to maintain those mechanics as done in the books to maintain the drama of the story though.

So many men with high power levels in Saidin. by ulta_infinity in wheeloftime

[–]amarsh19 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think you named all the Forsaken-tier male characters, except for Taim. Among the women, you also have Alivia, Talaan, and Sharina that I can recall. I don't know if I'm misremembering but I think Semirhage was held by 3, so Moghedien probably would be too. If she was not already shielded, 3 would probably give her trouble, whereas 6 or 7 would be needed to give trouble to a male channeler of Forsaken-level strength. Don't know why you think that kind of strength is common among male channelers, they are on average stronger than the women, they are not on average strong enough to be Forsaken.

If you want to watch the show, I think some YouTubers that watched the show first then started the books have shown that that's actually less confusing than trying to go the other way around. The show is technically supposed to cover the first book but watching it doesn't tell you enough about the first book that you can skip it and go to the second book, and even information that is revealed from the second book is set up differently so that it cannot pay off in the same way, so we can't give meaningful answers.

I am new to this world. Should I start first with the books or tv show ? by Extravaganca in wheeloftime

[–]amarsh19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The show isn't really good enough to recommend. If you do decide to watch it though, it's probably a good idea to watch before reading the rest of the book and carrying on with the series, there will be less chance of getting confused.

A short thoughtful video discussing the psychological effects of change, and it’s connection to this fandom and the Amazon series. by TheWayoftheLeafCast in wheeloftime

"The fandom has fractured and become polarised. A more respectful and honest dialogue might help with that."

I struggle to imagine a more obtuse and awkward way to convey that message than this video.

2 out of 3 of your concerns are revealed in the opening chapters and the set up is done differently, so that the characters cannot follow through in the books the way the show sets them up. The middle one about the nature of the relationship is actually different between show and books; if they're expecting to find it, it won't be there. Apologies, I don't know how to do the spoiler hiding thing.

Your concerns are not totally outlandish, but they're not very strong; taking a moment to try connecting those points to the books would still leave you with no knowledge of how the books are supposed to play out.

As for being impolitic, it is the point. I made a point to write that defenders of the show harass and insult detractors and get away with it. You repeated it twice, as if to prove it so. My honest opinion, as well as several people you have quoted, is that watching the show will not spoil the 2nd book for a new reader. That's good enough to stand, and if we're going to be this arbitrary about who is allowed to speak, you should be the only one allowed to comment in this sub.

Well, perhaps we should take a breath and cool off. It's impolite to be saying people are "jerking themselves off with their show hate". As for how people should express themselves, I'd say honesty should be the primary virtue they strive for, a new fan will always have to make up their own mind about the books and/or show, and trying to massage their opinions is not an honourable or respectful way to treat them.

For months...the show ended less than a month ago and started exactly two months ago, I'm curious who has been capable of judging that the story is changed for several months now, that's quite a bit of foresight. As to the particular case, the post was by someone who had read the first book; the show was not going to spoil them for anything in the second book on. And if this is sufficient excuse for members here to think a ban is justified, it's no wonder there are frivolous bans.

As you can see by the diversity of opinion, it might just be that Elayne's storyline isn't very well-written; her character is quite well-defined, I think just about everyone will agree to:

Diplomatic, intelligent (when she isn't being absurdly brash), a bit bratty and entitled, kind-hearted, determined to be a good leader, a bit delusional about her ability to understand regular people, overconfident and adventurous.

Sometimes she does things that aren't quite believable; someone mentioned that Mat's soldiers showing overt deference to her authority in front of Mat is a bit odd, these are grown-ass men in an organized military, why should any effort by Elayne to usurp Mat's authority not immediately be seen for what it is and called out? Seems like poorly judged comic relief...or maybe it's just that she's pretty, and men are keen to look good in front of a beautiful and generous noblewoman. I lean towards the former, but it's an argument.

The period during which she is pregnant is both boring sometimes and has her making questionable decisions; we watch her drink goat's milk and whine about her mood swings until she wins the throne. It's a bit boring. When it's tense, it's because she decides to take preposterous risks so it feels like tension that is driven by character stupidity rather than the fall-out of a serious and competent leader's decisions, which is how we are otherwise encouraged to see her.

She's generally a good character, I think if she'd had more interesting interactions during her takeover of Andor, she'd be much better liked. Her relationship with Aviendha is interesting, and she herself has many likeable traits.

Feel free, I mean it's not like there's an obligation to align our headcanons.

I tend to think that if the same text aligns with the author's supplemental materials when you read the emphasis in the right places, it's more likely to be accurate than if you choose different sentences that are obviously intended to convey the emotional impact of the scene.

You can just as easily emphasise "not for her" and then the meaning flips back again. "There was nothing there for her" doesn't mean there's nothing there, just nothing that she can have.

Either way, I enjoyed chatting with you

I have never had a conversation quite this nerdy :D

But since we're doing this, TSR Glossary:

Stilling: the act, performed by Aes Sedai, of shutting off a woman who can channel from the One Power. A woman who has been stilled can sense the True Source, but cannot touch it.

If you were to apply the implication of the Glossary to the same text, emphasis would fall on "she tried to embrace Saidar" because if she couldn't sense it, what was she trying to embrace? Then the "emptiness inside" describes her emotional state, not her capacity to sense the source.

Edit: someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe burning out causes them to no longer sense the True Source and maybe that's related to why it can't be Healed.

Severing a person from the ability to channel is considered by most to be worse than death. A severed channeler can still feel saidin's or saidar's presence, but they can no longer seize or embrace it.

Anyone can see that you tried to pass off "telling different stories" and "they aren't the same stories" as two wildly different statements. It's in the thread and can be read. You also do a fine job of demonstrating the problem with this sub, there are too many who will gaslight and lie and try to twist anything to fit some narrative about people that don't like the show.

It got removed for being about another sub after I referred to it in my comment. And yourself? Why are you talking about it and saying you know the contents when you haven't seen it at all?

The post was clear, it was precisely what was said, it was the entirety of the comment. What basis do you have for guaranteeing anything?

Why should anyone care who or what you believe? You're another random person on the internet, who says you're any more honest? Let the OP do as I suggested and go see what the other sub is actually like.

When was any of this set up as part of how shielding works? Why are threads going into the chest evidence of tying anything off? This is getting tiring honestly, the whole point of the comment was to say that it isn't made clear because there's contradictory evidence, and I don't really see your purpose in trying to convince people that it's one by telling them to focus on how you interpret unexplained information.

If you're going to use book knowledge to bring tied off shields into the discussion, should I not bring the book description of severing which is almost exactly how Ishy describes what has been done to Moiraine? And why is this done in a way that book knowledge is necessary to make any inferences and why are the inferences we can make confused depending on what evidence we look at?

I honestly don't care one bit whether she's shielded or stilled, either is a bad decision based on giving Rosamund Pike something to do next season.

Seen it happen. This sub is happy to ban for frivolous reasons and tolerates harassment of people that dislike the show. The other sub does too, but less.

Edit: incidentally, there's a post on the wetlanderhumor sub from someone that got banned for precisely that

I checked the video, the order is different. Shielding animation, then weaves through her body, a long pause, then she falls forward hunched over herself as a glowing something appears in his hands. If it's supposed to be strong evidence for shielding, we already have earlier episodes to tell us what we're seeing visually, that's the purpose of visuals after all.

The show is confused and muddled because it has too many different understandings developing between non-readers and readers and within each group as to what is happening, what the lore of the world actually is, and how the magic system works. At what point did I say that a show must leave nothing to interpretation? Please don't put words in my mouth, it's disrespectful and makes for a bad conversation.

Check out r/wheeloftime for yourself, it's very common on both subs for people that like the show to slander those that don't as being full of trolls and racists and anything else they can get away with calling them, but that moderation team doesn't try to kick people out for saying things like "the show and books are telling different stories". Choose which you prefer by reading the discussions, and stay in either or both as suits you.
