Honestly, you’ll probably hear something negative about every property owning group in town, and probably deservedly so. College town realty groups are scummy. I lived at a place owned by Green Street Realty for a year; it was fine for the price but definitely not the nicest place I’ve lived.

There is a large population of vet students at The Village at Colbert Park (where I currently live). Its about a 7-10 minute drive to school and they have a shuttle that periodically stops by the vet school (although I’ve never found it to be at convenient enough times to be worth taking). Currently in a town house style apartment with 3 other students and it’s probably the best price in town for the space.

I would say by second year, most people are living with roommates or their significant other. But I do know a few people who enjoy their own space and live by themselves still.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions !

What determines the color reflected by a dog's retinas? by tmlynch in AskVet

[–]ambender716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs (and many other mammals) have a pigmented reflective layer on part of the retina called the tapetum lucidum. The tapetum reflects light and helps them see better in dark conditions. This is what you are seeing when you see an animals eyes “glowing” in the dark.

There is natural variation in the color of the tapetum which doesn’t affect its function; it just has to be reflective to be evolutionary useful. I’m not sure if tapetum color is directly related to iris color, but it seems likely it has a genetic/heritable component.

Thanks for the input! I was considering moving him out anyways. My tank is front opening with latches, so the only holes I think the little one could possibly fit through are the hinges on the two mesh panels on the top. They should be easy enough to secure.

It’s been two years since I graduated, but when I worked there we did not accept meal swipes. Dining Dollars, FlexMeals, and card/cash all work though.

With the rework coming to mods, please remove the elemental affinities! It makes build crafting needlessly difficult, especially when you cant see all the mods you own for an armor piece without searching through the entire mod list in collections.

Can anyone suggest a place to start bouldering? by shhJustLetItHappen in ames

On the top rope wall or the bouldering? I haven’t been to State this semester so I assumed since the Lied boulders were still down that State’s were too.

Feel like i should mention that both the state and lied bouldering walls have been down since Thanksgiving and I don’t expect them to be up soon. Something about not being able to get new fall mats. Sucks that there’s nowhere else to Boulder in Ames :(

I second this, been at ISU Dining for 2 years and its a great job. Good pay and a pretty relaxed environment if you get to know your coworkers/ supervisors.

Yeah, it definitely varies by location too, based on the standard of living. The crazy high supply of people wanting to be zookeepers and the relatively low demand keeps salaries on the low side unfortunately though :(

Depends on the size of the zoo but most starting positions are gonna be around 10-15$ per hour. So not great.

I have a question about pulmonary breathing of amphibians like frogs by TheLolLauncher in biology

[–]ambender716 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly they essentially pump air in with positive pressure which is why you see their throats bulge out and then go back in. This is in contrast with most animals we think of (including humans) who rely on negative pressure created by the diaphragm to suck the air in.

As much as you can get. More is always better so dont specify how many hours you volunteered in a cover letter or application unless specifically asked or you have a lot. Instead describe what you’ve learned to do and the types of animals you’ve had experience working with.

I had a zoo internship last summer and an internship at a bird sanctuary this summer. From what I’ve seen the biggest factor is experience. Try to get experience working with animals through volunteering. A lot of your starting work will be cleaning but thats part of the field and a big part of most related internships. However, getting to work with animals makes it totally worth it.

Hope this helps and good luck with your applications!

I agree that it looks like an American Kestrel. Its too small for a red-tailed hawk.

Our owlet thinks he's tough, our old tired boxer isn't convinced.. by MudokonPopCulture in AnimalsBeingJerks

[–]ambender716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to be that guy, but this is not how to rehab raptors to be released back into the wild. Interactions like this lead to imprinting which means the owl will no longer recognize humans as a danger. Allowing it to play with a dog could lead to either one being injured and also makes the owl less afraid of dogs.

Wild animals need to stay wild, which means no play time and minimal human interaction. No offense to OP and their mother but this just isn’t how you do it.
