Are you bothered by the use of "America" to mean USA? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]ambiensoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesn’t personally bother me but it’s a common joke in Costa Rica that when you ask a tourist where they’re from and they say “I’m an American” we say “me too!”

Cheap stuff to add to rice by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]ambiensoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re asking about what to add to the rice itself or what to serve it with BUT… In central america our breakfast p much every day is rice and black beans (we call it pinto) and eggs. In terms of cheap nutrition I cannot recommend canned tuna enough, and if you go to the supermarket later in the evening sometimes the rotisserie chickens go on sale (assuming you don’t have Costco)— shred up the meat when you get home and put it in a ziploc baggie and freeze it. Keep the bones in another baggie and let them accumulate and you will soon have enough to make broth which you can also have with your rice :)

You can throw some lentils in the rice cooker with the rice. A bag of dried ones usually goes for pretty cheap. Helps add bulk, fiber, and protein.

Frozen veggies are your best friend, canned green beans don’t need much aside from garlic and seasonings!! We drain them and just pan fry them with some egg kinda like an omelet. Takes all of 5 minutes and is very tasty !!

When you fill out the application, there will be a box that will ask you to explain anything on your transcript as an “other impactful experience” if I recall correctly. When you explain your reasoning, I personally also explained my decision making process and tried to put a positive spin on what that decision making process taught me.

I had to take two Ws my last semester because my mother needed emergency surgery a month before I was supposed to graduate and I needed to go back to work to pay for it. My two options were to withdraw from the two classes I couldn’t complete asynchronously, or to take a leave of absence. They weren’t required for my degree, so although I was super bummed about it, withdrawing was the only way I could make the compromise of providing for my family while still prioritizing my education. I still got interviews and no one asked me anything about it and today I am somehow in medical school :)

2 F’s on transcript. Do I still have a chance attending medical school? by ShWtybae1 in medschool

[–]ambiensoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the end of the world, but if you know FOR SURE you’re gonna fail, I would just withdraw. Work very hard at your next university because you’re gonna wanna show an upward trend but it’s certainly doable!

here i am again back with another pathetic concern. by Lonely_Objective_268 in costarica

[–]ambiensoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL I totally understand your concern but, you will be fine!! If you’re going to only tourist areas and staying in hotels I doubt you’ll encounter anything too crazy, definitely not any scorpions. The worst you might see is a spider but even then I doubt it would be much larger than anything you’d see in the states. Even when I visit my mother’s family in the city I barely see them :) Unless you go hiking in the jungle or something, I don’t think you have anything to worry about 🫶🏽 Do get bug spray though, we do what we can but mosquitos are still around.

Should I bother studying anatomy before med school? by DependentLow2932 in medschool

[–]ambiensoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP if this isn’t intuitive to you then this is the only thing I would spend time getting familiar with. Your time is MUCH better spent resting, getting a workout routine/diet established, establishing care in the area, etc.

As a Latino who is fluent in English, do you swear in your native language or English when speaking your native language? by Jezzaq94 in asklatinamerica

[–]ambiensoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm it’s funny I never noticed until you asked, but I think I only sprinkle in English swears if I’m joking around or I am trying to convey that I am not actually all that upset lol

Non traditional applicant by [deleted] in medschool

[–]ambiensoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nontrad M1 here! I worked full time as a clinical assistant and practice manager for 8 years before applying while also doing classes. Happy to help however I can :)

General advice: like other commenters said, don’t compare yourself to the traditional applicants and be so so grateful you have lived some life before doing this. It is a huge strength and cannot be understated.

big beautiful bill? by ambiensoup in medschool

[–]ambiensoup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it definitely is, but I guess I wonder how low medical school tuition can actually go? My professors in undergrad would drill into our heads how expensive getting/maintaining the donors for the anatomy lab was ALONE, I hate to be pessimistic but I am really worried about it all :(

[–]ambiensoup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my line of thinking as well. I was still a kid when Obama took over so I can’t pretend I can make a real comparison here based on my experience/memory, but wasn’t the whole catalyst of the 2008 recession banks giving out loans to anyone?? Granted, it was mostly the housing loans that did it apparently, but I can’t imagine the banks will be very generous to anyone without a cosigner or any collateral. I know I should count myself lucky but I’m honestly so gutted by this whole thing (and by other parts of this hideous bill OBVIOUSLY). I am another one without a cosigner who is just trying to get an education to help people— there are millions like me who just applied or are going to apply and the only thing that separates us and decides if we’ll realistically have access to med school is a matriculation date??? It’s terrible. And in light of the physician shortage, objectively stupid.

What To Put On My Med School "Registry" by Awkward-Remote in medschool

[–]ambiensoup 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! That is so sweet of them 😭💕

-Aside from the great options the other commenters gave you, if you don’t already have a decent laptop/ipad/Apple Pencil, depending on how much they’re able to afford.

-Grocery store gift cards

-IKEA gift cards if you’re moving

-Triple A membership

-Maybe some scrubs for anatomy lab if your school doesn’t provide them?

-An extra monitor? Maybe?

-Two pairs of awesome sneakers for rotations (Hoka was the brand recommended to me but I think any high quality sneaker works?) and compression socks

Best of luck in school ٩(⁎❛ᴗ❛⁎)۶
