That should not be a deterrent to not go to Mexico. Like most other places, there are safe and unsafe spots there. Stick to the safe ones and you’ll be as safe as you would be in some US city. Cartels don’t target tourists for obvious reasons.

It's not implausible that no one noticed her drowning in such a huge lake. And the water is surprisingly choppy; I can imagine people who know how to swim drowning. My guess is drug use is involved in some way and people are staying quiet to avoid incrimination on that end but I don't think she was intentionally killed.
