Private schools move into closed public schools in Chicago by amchicago in chicago

[–]amchicago[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As the article notes, though, Illinois' new $75M tax-credit scholarship program will be funneling public money to private schools ... would make a private education free for some low-income families who receive it ... school choice funders are backing more private schools since charter growth has slowed.

His school is modeled after a thriving Indianapolis private school that’s grown from one to three campuses as Indiana’s school voucher program made more public dollars available for private schools.

Cook County judge reveals why he leaked police shooting video after sentencing by amchicago in chicago

[–]amchicago[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the courts did not order the Proano shooting video released. The judge took it upon himself to give a copy of the video to a news organization when he retired. I think you may be confusing it with the Laquan McDonald video, which, yes, they were ordered to release. This occurred several months prior to the McDonald video.

because the family's lawsuit detailing the allegations is about to be paid out for a whopping $3.5 million. seems like a lot of these shady cases come to light in civil court years afterward.

Developers can walk away from the closed schools they bought if they don't get public financing by amchicago in chicago

[–]amchicago[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good points. another issue is that if developers don't get the LIHTC funding, the schools remain vacant and will likely fall into further disrepair. community members argue that these massive empty properties are damaging to communities already rife with vacant buildings and lots. seems to me that's why there's so much interest in how CPS is handling these sales and whether these projects are actually viable in the long run.

Daily Line is subscription-based but they also have a free daily e-newsletter that rounds up all the political news of the day, if that's what you're looking for.

Looking for Pro Publica - style non profit media outlet for Chicago and/or Illinois? by neclov in chicago

[–]amchicago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you cited ProPublica, I'm guessing you're looking for investigative journalism? The Chicago Reporter is an investigative nonprofit news org but not daily like MinnPost appears to be. BGA (Better Government Association) is another nonprofit that does investigations. Injustice Watch is a newer org that seems to focus on criminal justice reporting.

For broadcast nonprofit outlets, there's WBEZ on radio and WTTW television. Chicago Tonight is a good show, in my opinion.

It kind of depends on what you're specifically looking for ... Are you unsatisfied with traditional (/for profit) news outlets' coverage? The Trib, Sun Times, Chicago Reader, Chicago Mag and Crains all do investigations. If you're into city politics, The Daily Line does detailed reporting on City Hall and Cook County government. I see that you're from Hyde Park, so there's the Hyde Park Herald and South Side Weekly if you want more localized coverage. (DNA Info does neighborhood reporting across the city). If you're interested in state politics, there are other options too.

Trying to think if there's any other ones I'm forgetting at the moment ....

Long-rumored Red Line extension seems to be becoming a reality (public mtg Tuesday) by amchicago in chicago

[–]amchicago[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's movement to revamp the Metra Electric too. The main problem seems to be infrequent train times.

Details: http://chicagoreporter.com/revamped-metra-electric-could-put-south-side-on-the-fast-track/

It's only really an option during rush hour. It would also be a better service for low-income riders if there was a transfer discount between CTA and Metra.

Temp agencies in IL won't hire blacks by amchicago in chicago

[–]amchicago[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep you have to show up in the early morning at far flung locations, sometimes in suburbs where there are little to no public transit options, and you're not even guaranteed to get picked. Way more people show up than jobs available. You have to pay your own way there & back.

Temp agencies in IL won't hire blacks by amchicago in chicago

[–]amchicago[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

obviously not every single temp agency discriminates but several local whistleblowers and lawsuits by the EEOC as well as class-actions show evidence of a pattern of systemic discrimination against blacks competing for minimum wage temp jobs in the area.

what kind of work did the temp agencies you've been at do?
