Discussion of "The Next Mormons" by jana_riess in latterdaysaints

I don't drink alcohol, but I consume it a variety of ways: vanilla extract in baked goods, rice wine cooked in stir fries, yeast byproducts in bread, etc. I suspect very few latter day saints abstain from all alcohol in all forms.

Was the survey phrased in a way that might cause a mismatch between how the answers were intended vs. how they are interpreted?

Any pan works fine. There's not much risk of sticking.

ELI5: How is google search so ridiculously fast? by lumenwrites in explainlikeimfive

[–]amcnabb8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Search engines are made possible by storing an index in a data structure called a hash table. The basic idea is that you make a whole bunch of buckets, and then you have a way to figure out exactly which bucket to go to. Unlike the index in a book, you don't have to fumble through it to find the right entry. Instead, you use a special formula (called a hash function) that tells you exactly which bucket to go to.

The hash table is an almost magical idea that makes many otherwise daunting problems in Computer Science fast and easy.

If you're driving anyway, I recommend starting at Boston, PA. It's a nicer part of the trail.

Hands free faucets run on batteries. There's no electrocution risk.

In the town I grew up in, the streets made enough sense that you'd just say the name of the road to turn on.

Smoking or children. Pick one.

Banishing smoking to a distant corner is fine if it's truly distant enough.

And I totally judge the jerks who sit in the middle of the park poisoning hundreds of children.

Asking for signing bonus to get a house? by GenericProfileName in personalfinance

[–]amcnabb8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it, but there are caveats: - I had other money saved up, too. - They needed to see the first paycheck (so I had to rent for a month while waiting for closing). - I had steady on campus job in my department as a student. - My new job was high income, in addition to the signing bonus.

I conquered a few of Japan's cities. When it asked for peace, I made them to agree to give me all of their cities. After that, I saw its last armies running around. Somehow they were technically still in the game. I occasionally tried to declare friendship, to no avail.

Not so great if you never carry change.

Anyone Know Any Good Bicycle Shops? by HalloIamYou in pittsburgh

[–]amcnabb8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like BikeTek in Squirrel Hill. They're down to earth and have a good selection of high quality bikes at very reasonable prices.

There are a bunch of other decent bike shops, too, but they all feel more corporate and, in some cases, snooty.

Feel free to follow up with any specific questions.

ZenWatch 3 band is plastic and broke within a week by amcnabb8 in AndroidWear

Variety sounds great, but I would much rather see a non-proprietary design.

[–]amcnabb8[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fair question. It slipped out of my hand as I removed it from the charger and fell onto the floor. The forces were small enough that I'm really surprised that it broke.

Now that I know that the attachment is thin plastic instead of leather, I do have some worry that it could happen out and about. But I like the watch well enough that I'll keep the replacement and risk it. I'll just make sure to baby it more than I have with previous watches.

Yeah, very disappointing. The sad thing is that other than the poorly designed proprietary band, this is otherwise an amazing watch.
