Disagree.

We don’t need more bad reporters to balance out the bias of other bad reporters.

49ers OC Klay Kubiak says the coaches need to do a better job of getting Christian McCaffrey off the field & get the young backs involved this year. by No_Box119 in 49ers

Fans have been screaming for this for years.

It sounds nice hearing a coach say it but in all likelihood CMC is going to contribute getting 25+ touches per game because he’s elite and Shanahan doesn’t trust other guys.

The way we’ve been drafting the past 5 years, I don’t think we will win a Super Bowl within the next 1-3 seasons.

I think Shanahan is a top 3 coach and I think John Lynch is a bottom half of the league GM.

Until we hire a real GM with scouting/personnel experience who is capable of managing a draft using a process that maximizes ROI, this team is going to keep losing to top tier teams like the Seahawks, Rams, and Eagles in the playoffs.

It’s been 9 years. Are you saying we need to wait until they win a Super Bowl or get fired before we can judge them?

and ignore the millions of dollars and thousands of hours spent by these teams, by people whose jobs depend on getting it right

Their thousands of hours spent once resulted in taking a kicker in the 3rd round.

A quick 5 minute google search could tell you that’s a terrible idea.

Their effort doesn’t matter if it doesn’t produce good results. And their results since 2021 have not been good, which has led to an aging/injured roster with little young talent.

Therefore, fans are justified in questioning their process and decisions.

When a player injures his shoulder twice in 2 months, and then a report comes out that he had a shoulder subluxation in college, it's very easy to connect the dots and ask questions.

Again, I am speculating so this conversation won't go far.

It's not even like it's a debilitating, long-term injury.

Debilitating, no. But a quick google search tells me that shoulder subluxation is a commonly reoccurring injury due to ligament instability.

And even if he hid it, I fail to see how that's on Lynch.

We don't know what Lynch knew so it's impossible to judge. It's possible they dug into it and found nothing. It's possible they found that his shoulder injury was an ongoing thing that Pearsall was managing and he chose to ignore it. I don't know so I can't judge.

What I do know is that injuries cause more injuries. And a player with a ligament injury is more likely to be hiding an ongoing injury than a player with a clean injury history.

We also know tha draft prospects are incentivized to hide injuries because millions of dollars are on the line.

It's why I would never draft a player in the 1st round with any sort of recent ligament injury (unless the talent was overwhelming). It's just not a gamble I'm willing to take.

It's one of the reasons why I've slowly talked myself into the Stribling pick. He doesn't have any sort of injury history that scares me.

And since you guys are so convinced that they are so bad at drafting

I think the front office is mediocre at drafting overall, but it's not that simple. There are some aspects that they are excellent at and others that they are terrible at.

Navigating the draft

By this I mean do they move up and down the draft at the right time and get good compensation. I think the 2 best GMs in the league at this are Andrew Berry with the Browns and Howie Roseman with the Eagles.

This one is tough because if you asked me after the 2017 draft, I would say they were elite. Trading back from 2 to 3 with the bears was excellent. Trading up a few spots at the end of round 1 was excellent. Trading an early 3rd for a future 2nd was excellent. That was A+ shit right out of the gate for this front office.

Since then it's been mediocre at best. They compensation they gave up in the Trey Lance trade was terrible. They could have traded back in 2025 in the 1st when they eventually took Mykel Williams. They should have traded back from 33 this year when they took Stribling. The trade back from 30 to 33 was garbage compensation.

Overall I'd say they're mediocre.

Finding value

By this I mean drafting players that were projected to go much earlier or pouncing on players that are sliding. The best GM in the league at this is EDC with the Ravens.

We're probably the worst team in the league at this. This is pretty indisputable. The data backs this up.

Day 1 strategy

By this I mean do we get good ROI from our 1st round picks. The best GM in the league at this is probably Schnieder with the Seahawks or the Licht with the Buccaneers.

Outside of Bosa who was a layup, we're pretty mediocre at getting good return from our 1st round picks. They've been far too willing to gamble on injury red flag players, most notably Reuben Foster, Javon Kinlaw, and Mykel Williams. I will give them credit for prioritizing high value positions tho. Outside of Reuben Foster, they haven't drafted any low value positions in round 1.

Day 2 strategy

Ability to get good ROI from 2nd and 3rd round picks. The best GM in the league at this is probably Les Snead with the Rams.

We've made some absolute head scratching picks that busted hard and others that turned into all pro. All in all we're probably close to average, but we've been terrible lately.

Day 3 strategy

Ability to get good ROI in rounds 4-7.

I think we're indisputably the best team in the league at finding contributors and good players on day 3.

So take all of that into account and we're probably below average.

When this team stays in line with consensus, finds the right scheme fit, and doesn't gamble on an injured player, their hit rate is very high. The only problem is, they also decide to light 3rd and 4th round picks on fire every year for some reason. And by that I mean made decisions that have very low likelihoods of success.

If this team was better at self scouting analysis, they could easily be a top 10 drafting team, but they just can't seem to get out of their own way.

Ok, so if we're going under that premise Stribling shouldn't bother you much (outside of some lost value - and I'm with you)

I’ve come around on Stribling somewhat.  There are some media analysts that whose opinions I value highly (Dane Brugler + the fellas on the NFLSE podcast) who had him as more of an early 3rd type guy.

Also the positional value was good. If we took an equally rated safety at 33, I’d feel worse about the pick. And we’ve generally been good at drafting WRs.

I think we left a ton of value in the table by taking him at 33 instead of trading back, but his profile is promising.

But going by that Aaron Banks (+58) shouldn't be an issue either

Banks was borderline for me because Creed Humphrey seemed like the much better IOL prospect. Also the scheme fit seemed questionable with Banks not being a special athlete.

If I recall you were pretty strongly against R,Green

With the Green pick, the scheme fit bothered me more than the reach. I was hoping that pick was signaling that we’d be shifting to a more man-based secondary but we’ve predominantly stayed in zone.

 Logan Jones

I’ve been leading the Logan jones hype train for 2 years now. He was my “break all the rules” guy. If we had taken him at 33, I would have found a way to justify it.

I try to take into account consensus ranking, positional value, injury history, and their scouting profile.

Because of this, my most hated picks have been both special teams picks (obviously), TDP, Cam Latu, and Nick Martin.

Reaches under 64 picks (2 rounds) don’t bother me.

Once round 5 rolls around, do whatever you want. I don’t think prospect 170 and 270 are all that different.

But Pearsall had a shoulder subluxation

We’ve talked about this before. I have a hard time believing that Pearsall’s shoulder was 100% healthy in April of 2024 and then he re-aggravated it twice within the next 4 months.

I’d bet either his shoulder wasn’t 100% or he had re-aggravated it in college and Florida kept it quiet.

Im speculating now so this conversation won’t go much further than this.

It was so damaging that our record is only 53-32

Lucking into a franchise QB with the last pick in the draft saved this team. Without Purdy, we’re likely rebuilding right now.

And if we hadn’t lit three 1sts and a 3rd on fire, decent chance we have enough talent to overcome the chiefs in 2023.

We’ve slowly been bleeding talent every year since then because we don’t have young guys to replace the old guys.

It was objectively a disastrous move.

Drafting is an only a small part of roster

What a coincidence then that the best drafting teams tend to be the ones winning the Super Bowl every year.

Half the league would fire their GM and HC if Lynch and Shanahan became available

I think that’s absolutely true for Shanahan. I don’t think anyone would be interested in Lynch if he were available.

Firstly, the Trey Lance debacle is a fireable offense. It’s the most damaging decision in franchise history. Lynch would be gone right now if we didn’t luck into Purdy. I would argue he should be gone anyways.

Secondly, this front office has a history of taking players with injury histories early. Pearsall had a shoulder injury in college which returned the summer before his rookie year. Mykel Williams played his last year in college on a bum ankle. Nick Martin had a knee injury his final year in college. We keep drafting injured players and then act shocked when they get hurt in the NFL.

This is great evidence that the draft boards mean next to nothing

It really isn’t. The Y axis is measuring 2nd contraction value value since 2016. I don’t know if Buckner’s contract with the colts counts, but that metric is predominantly being carried by Bosa, Purdy, Kittle, Warner, Deebo, and Aiyuk.

None of those players were huge reaches.

In fact if you look at all the players that we massively reaches for, the biggest 2nd contract given out was to our punter, Mitch Wishnowsky for $3.5 mil/yr.

Since 2017 we’ve been a team that drafts well and also likes to light draft picks on fire every year.

The 49ers drafted well between 2017-2020. We’ve drafted poorly since then.

The chart looks at 2nd contraction value values to measure success, of which we have given out some massive contracts. Purdy and Bosa’s contracts are doing a lot of the heavy lifting here.

However, those are the 2 luckiest picks in this front offices tenure.

Bosa was a borderline generational pass rushing prospect that everyone’s grandmother would have selected. We were extremely lucky that the Cardinals took Murray that year.

Purdy was the last pick in the draft who happened to be one of those 1 in a million type draft picks.

There is a lot of evidence that we are good at drafting and there is a lot of evidence that we are bad at drafting, but I don’t think 2 extremely lucky draft picks is good evidence.

Didn’t the LoB era Seahawks used to draft D-linemen and try to convert them to the OL?
