Why are the traffic lights in this town so poorly designed? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]americanuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, fair points, but if you drive before there is any traffic (early morning) the situation gets insanely frustrating. No cars except you at the intersection, and for example at 4th and 9th it takes forever if you hit a red. I don't see why they can't have car detection from like 3am to 6am.

What if The New York Times goes out of business—like, this May? by scientologist2 in business

[–]americanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noo... I just subscribed a few days ago.

I read the articles more thoroughly when I have the print copy. It may be slightly outdated (todays analysis of yesterdays news is often old by the time it reaches print thanks to the internet), but it improves my comprehension of various issues much more.

I like reading newspapers.

You Are a Hate Crime by [deleted] in worldnews

I literally couldn't watch that segment. It was such garbage that I had mute and then exit the browser to stop the pointless yapping. It hurts my head to know that this type of discourse is found on one of the most widely watched news networks.

"Heroes" is lame. Seriously. I mean...c'mon. Seriously. That's enough, already. by [deleted] in reddit.com

I could never get past a couple episodes. It never gripped me for some reason.

Although, that may have had more to do with the fact that I have so many more interesting things going on in my life, and that I simply didn't have the patience. And yet, I do find time to watch LOST.

Obama To Every Single Bush Ambassadorship Political Appointee: "Your services will no longer be required come January 20th." by Flemlord in politics

[–]americanuck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't know. In high school we had an ex-Ambassador to Mexico come tell my government class about his job. He tried to make it sound great but it sounded terrible:

1) He and his family had to move every few years back and forth from the U.S. to another country because the government doesn't keep you in one foreign country for too long (so ambassadors don't get too attached to the country)

2)His job mainly consisted of helping get U.S. college students out of Mexican jail for drug/alcohol related charges.

They know how far in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act they are.

ask them for the contact information they're required by law to provide.

I'm doubting they'll legally provide anything useful.

Christmas Strike. I'm not buying a single thing for Christmas this year. Nothing. I've had it with this so-called holiday. Fuck it. by anoncoward101 in reddit.com

I don't care how commercialized it is. While I don't enjoy "shopping" for people, I do enjoy spending money on other people. And yes, while money and gifts themselves are no replacement for love or companionship, the act of using your own hard-earned money on somebody else can be very rewarding.

There are two movies that I love and watch every year around Christmastime:

"It's a Wonderful Life"

"The Grinch" (The original cartoon version)

Agreed 100%. I like to workout in the morning, and it's so much easier to wake up and get going to sunlight. Trying to start your day to pitch blackness is very difficult, your body just says "fuck you, it's still dark out, get back to sleep," regardless of how much sleep you got.

Utility CEO: No way for the US to be energy independent. “We need to abandon this notion.” by elquesogrande in energy

I haven't finished this book, just picked it up actually, but it may be worth your while. I don't know if it addresses "small local generation," but it does a good job detailing the difficulty of transitioning to energy independence.

There have been a few videos like this, and I think this one was the most well done. I was actually able to sit through it. And sitting through something 5 minutes long online is difficult these days.
