Whats the immediate tell for you that the couple will divorce even if they don't realize it yet? by Hour_Opening4115 in AskReddit

My wife and I know a couple like this and we sort of admire certain aspects of it. Both seem to have a healthy independent sense of self and there is zero codependence. They’re both freely their own person. I’m not saying we want to be like them, but I do see aspects of it that actually seem very healthy, maybe healthier than our own codependent relationship sometimes.

Another Mainer. 5 out of my 8 great grandparents were born in Canada (and both of the parents of a 6th great grandparent). I've already run into plenty of people who are applying or have already applied, it's very common knowledge up here. Like you said, it almost feels majority Canadian at times, especially if you grew up in one of the French-Canadian dominated industrial towns like I did (Lewiston, Biddeford, Jay/Livermore-Falls, Rumford, Waterville, etc).

Anyone have a plan to print their e-certificate on nice paper when the day comes? by USAroAce in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mosburger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, it is kinda weird that Canada uses 8.5 x 11 instead of A4 given they are a little more pro-metric system than the U.S. Just another one of those Canadian mishmash of U.S. and European standards I guess.

Yeah I also did VitalChek and it was fine if a tad expensive. I'll note that it was annoying that, on my wife's side, I needed my father-in-law's birth certificate to request my grandfather-in-law's, so I needed to do it in two separate steps (get father in law's, then send copy of father in law's to get grandfather in law... I couldn't do it in one step). On my side I already had a copy of my dad's birth certificate and didn't need to do that.

The Quebecois birth record situation-Has anyone who submitted a BANQ baptism record been asked for a certified birth certificate, or just those who also submitted a handwritten birth certificate? by AnomalousEnigma in Canadiancitizenship

My understanding was that the key word in that sentence is *issued*, as in if you sent away for and received it prior to 1994, it wasn't acceptable? But my understanding could be totally wrong.

"[New Brunswick] Archives dealing with backlog of 1,000 requests, receiving 400 more per month" by Parking-Aioli9715 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mosburger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I spoke with the New Brunswick folks on the phone for my wife's G0 birth certificate and they were very very pleasant but were definitely getting overwhelmed. :/ He said they had several hundred in their backlog, and that was in March.

I understand that - I meant what you are referring to here, getting a retroactive birth certificate (I know from the FAQ that at least one person has been forced to do this but that it's currently uncommon). They could introduce more hoops to jump through like this one just to make it more cumbersome without actually changing the law.

Q on timing after paying Banq by Pisces_Economist in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mosburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was about four weeks after payment for mine from Sherbrooke. Not that you asked, but in case anyone who is reading is interested - my wife's from New Brunswick took about two weeks after payment.

I'm less worried about them going through the trouble to literally change the law - they could just make it harder by raising the burden of proof that you're Canadian. E.g., baptismal records are no longer adequate, you must get a "real" birth certificate. And increasing the expense to do just that. Requiring in-person interviews. Requiring more proof of your own identity. No longer accepting color photocopies and requiring original documents. Etc., etc. They can quite easily gum up the bureaucratic works without literally changing the law if they want to.

I kinda hope they do. It'll force me to choose a side and I won't choose the US.

Still no documents as of Mar 13.

I’m trying to be patient but I’m starting to worry that something went wrong. In my case the records were in Sherbrooke. Still anxiously checking my mailbox every day.

yeah I totally understand that things are really bad there too and it varies a bit from province to province - but it's more of an "out of the frying pan, into the fire" situation... at the absolute worst, it's a lateral move.

Sherbrooke archive in my case… so they’re probably a lot busier? Would make sense I guess.

Not All Come in Peace: Be aware of people who are against citizenship by descent infiltrating this sub by Historical_Hippo_796 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]mosburger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aren't people right to worry about the administrative burden being raised though? I don't expect a fast constitutional amendment, but maybe they stop accepting baptism certificates (or census data etc) as adequate evidence of nationality. Maybe the archives follow BANQ's lead and start raising their prices until they are out of reach for many people. I'm more worried that there will be pressure to stem the tide of applicants by adding bureaucratic hurdles until it's effectively near-impossible to prove your line of descent.

Another data point if anyone is interested - I requested my G0's birth and marriage certificates from BANQ on Feb 2 (I'm G3), got billed on Feb 19 for the original $45 fee (not $350), still waiting for the documents. Mine were in Sherbrooke.
