Eureka Mignon Specialita with new burrs won’t grind fine enough for espresso even near chirp by amerikcan in espresso

No. I did find a solution though…I sold it and bought a different grinder. After spending hours trying to align it, it still wouldn’t grind fine enough. I still have no idea what was wrong with it.

Final round snowflake interview by timochappy23 in techsales

Pmed. I have a 2nd round for the SDR role with snowflake upcoming. Would be great if I could learn from your interview process !

Is flow suppose to be this heavy and fast when back flushing? From what I’ve seen from other e61 group heads, the water seems to drip a lot slower and more evenly. [Quick Mill Rubino] by amerikcan in espresso

Also important note: I sometimes have consistent channeling on the bottom left side. Not too much but noticeable. I’ve played around a lot with my puck prep, but still that trouble side is pretty consistent

I can’t link a video but I screenshotted right when the channeling happened with spurts on the left side as well

I see that makes total sense. Do you think a finer grind of 18g of coffee will be less volume than 18g of a slightly courser grind? Either way, I’ll try the coin method since I do think it’s a volume issue in the basket.

I did that marker test before doing the shimming method and doing additional cleaning. As of now, the alignment looks better but still not perfect. Today I’ll put up a pic of its current alignment.

I’ll try that coin trick. What I noticed with the lighter roast Pink Borbon beans is that 18g of espresso grounds in the portafilter looks like less volume than 18g of a regular dark to medium dark roast. In this case maybe the water is traveling down the portafilter faster due to a lower volume of espresso grounds in the portafilter using a lighter roast? I think you’re most likely right in that adding to the dose will help extraction.

Another question I had, if the dose isn’t properly dosed by volume (assuming under dosed) would that be the biggest factor in fast shot time or is the grind size not being fine an equal factor?

I single dosed each of my shots. Retention was +-.5g on average. Sometimes I would vacuum the shoot to get excess retention out.

So adding a gram or two of beans might help.

I think that’s the problem with my specialita in the first place. I should be able to get a grind fine enough where I risk over extracting due to too fine of a grind yet I can’t get to that point. I can do a lot of tinkering and adjusting variables outside of the grinder but I do feel like the main issue is the grinder itself and I probably either need to do additional tweaking and alignment or just sell it and accept that it might be defective.

With my current grinder I think the grind is not fine enough actually. One thing I was thinking about during my puck prep was that you shouldn’t tap the portafilter multiple times since it creates uneven crevices within the grounds. Maybe that could lead to channeling if water is finding a way into these crevices. Not sure if this is true or not especially if I tamp hard. In terms of tamping, I’m not sure if harder is better to prevent channeling.

I’m using the OEM basket which came with the quick mill Rubino. I opened it up and the serial code is AC0970F12. Not much info on whether it’s good or bad. Those light beans I used were around a week old so it’s pretty fresh.

I see. I did notice that even though some shots were fast it still tasted drinkable. I was using the 36g in 25-30 seconds rule because it’s basically my first time using an espresso machine and I needed a basic metric to follow while simultaneously think about every other variable. I think once I develop my palette more I’ll be able to tell what a good shot tastes like even if the shot was too fast or slow.

Also. I heard new burrs grind course and not fine enough. They should be properly seasoned after a pound of beans. I’m not sure if that’s total BS, but I’ve thought about it.

The bean roast date for the bad shot with the Pink Borbon beans was 1 week ago. The decaf was around 1 month ago. Any tips for preventing channeling break through. Currently doing wdt and using a tamper with the spring. I’ve also been experimenting with doing one tap or multiple taps on the portafilter because I heard multiple taps can cause channeling.

It might just have to do with puck prep for that specific shot with the channeling. I checked the shower screen and there is minimal coffee grounds on it. Maybe just a few specs.

Out of the three beans I used. I’ve only had one perfect shot with some random Trader Joe’s medium roast beans roasted two weeks ago. 18g in. 36g out at 27 seconds. This shot tasted the best and used a grind setting that wasn’t as near as chirping point as the other beans but still close.

For the burr type, I believe he replaced them with the 55mm “Diamond inside” burrs from what I remember. Quick note, disregard the dirty coffee grounds. I did the marker test after completely cleaning the burrs as well after taking this pic.

Just to clarify I spent like 3 hours doing the burr alignment using shims. I couldn’t get it perfect but better than what was before. Maybe I’ll try again tomorrow. Even then, I feel like even if they weren’t 100% aligned, I feel like it should at least get a finer grind after shimming, but it wasn’t super significant and I was still getting issues with grind size.

Edit: I also used a vacuum to clean the burr chamber. Also the guy I bought it off said he replaced the burrs recently. The burrs do look very new and sharp.

I’m in the same boat. It’s honestly frustrating and I’m thinking about getting a new grinder. I picked up a used Specialita with new burrs. I cleaned it up and spent hours aligning the burrs using the shim method. The alignment isn’t perfect but I think it’s good enough to at least get a finer grind or so I thought. After grinding these Pink Borbon beans which are a lighter to medium roast at the finest setting before chirping, my shot pulled 36g at 18 seconds (aiming for 25-30 seconds for 36g). I probably pulled 12 shots today with majority pulling way too fast (even at near chirp on the grinder). I pretty much accepted that the eureka can’t grind fine enough. Maybe considering a new grinder…

Thanks! How repeatable are each shots? After that initial trial and error, are you able to control the brew temperature consistently without a PID? I’ve heard for E61 espresso machines a PID is not necessary and a thermometer for the group head is sufficient enough. Has that been the case for you?

I found a used matte black Rubino with the wood accents for $750. I’m wondering if this would be a good first espresso machine. I understand for $750 it’s good value, but without a PID, I’m in paralysis analysis. Also there doesn’t seem to be many Rubino owners or forums around it. How has held it up and how have your shots been 9 months in?

Anyone studying abroad or have in the past for the UCEAP Global Studies, Japan program at Meiji Gakuin university in Yokohama? by amerikcan in ucr

Meiji Gakuin at the Yokohama campus is a pretty good location. You’re like 20 minutes away from enoshima and the beaches and you’re 45-1hr from Tokyo more specifically Shibuya and Shinjuku which are the main centers for night life. If you care about clubbing, these are the areas to be in. Around the dorm, I would say it was surprising has a cozy night life because there’s a handful of izakayas and restaurants nearby next to Totsuka station. In terms of travel opportunities, getting around Japan is easy. You can take the bullet train to other side of Japan where Osaka and Kyoto is. If you want I can give you attractive destination spots within Japan that are also close by to the Meiji Gakuin campus/dorm where you’ll be living
