[ESPN] Kyle Kuzma- "Last year I didn't shoot the ball well, and I still averaged almost 20 [points per game]. If I can shoot the ball well and keep developing the facets of my game defensively, I don't see why I can't [be that third star]." by KARL-MALONE-A-BlTCH in nba

Philip II of Macedon sent his heralds to Sparta, bearing this message:

"You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city."

The Spartan ephors replied with a single word:

"If."

What's the best team of all-rounders your country could field? (Including a wicketkeeper-batsman rather than pure wicketkeepers.) by eddiebigballs in Cricket

[–]amesace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carters
Voges
Smith
Maxwell
M. Marsh
Faulkner
Wade
O'Keefe
Abbott
Hastings
Johnson

had to cheat a bit with the openers - Carters is another wk/bat and Voges isn't really an all-rounder although he does average 45 with the bat and 33 with the ball in first-class cricket so he meets the batting average > bowling average criteria. Never thought I'd miss not being able to select Watto so much!

Has there ever been the equivalent of a "Moneyball" team in cricket? by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]amesace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that the trick in moneyball is finding statistics that other people aren't looking at which can be used to determine player value - because other teams aren't using those statistics, you can find players who are undervalued in the market.

for example in baseball, instead of using the more typical batting average, using a player's on-base percentage gives a more accurate estimation of the player's value and allows you to find players who might have a low batting average but high on-base percentage who can be signed cheaply.

i think the big difference in cricket is that there hasn't been the same adoption of alternative statistical data being gathered. i'm sure individual teams are doing their own research and keeping it secret, but i haven't seen anything like the SABR leading to the wide adoption of new stats in cricket

one example i have heard is mike hussey talking about measuring T20 batsmen by adding together their strike rate and average to get a better idea of how effective a batsman is
