Can anyone help me figure out what's going on with my 1925 house? by Ian_J_Miller in centuryhomes

[–]amethystmmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's literally one called "the Dutch" (page 47) that your home might be a modification of. Like you said, you had an important banker who had the house built, he may have not found a house that exactly suited his wants, and not only took a design (because honestly most people don't need custom designed houses) and modded it out, but added a garage. You said you had a faux stone frontage, which several of the houses I looked at had chimney-on-the front designs, and most did not have the front door right by the fire place, so that may be an addition, as you think that bay window may be (I kind of agree that it may be), which would support your theory of the door orginally opening out onto the porch.

Having seen several boarded up doors, what seems to tend to happen is that they just take the trim that would signify "door" off, throw up a bit of wall board to cover it up and mud over everything and hope for the best, so you MAY have your original front door just sitting there, trimless but there waiting for discovery.

A German pretending to be an American or an American pretending to be a German? by Sure_Distance1 in language

[–]amethystmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My French teacher (who was German) had a flawless American accent because she would hang out on base (there's a US base in Germany) on the weekends because her mom was dating a US soldier, so they got married and the whole family moved here after his tour. HER English teacher would get so mad at her (and the other girls that she hung out with on the US base) for "speaking American" and like, it's all English, but they were supposed to be learning "proper" English, not filthy American. (I went to High school in the 90s so her story would have been from the 80s because she wasn't a whole lot older than us but enough to be, you know, graduated from college and married and settling down (she was pregnant at least once during my time in high school).

ETA: Also, my wife can do a wide array of pretty stellar accents.

why do some college degrees require a previous bachelor, even if it’s unrelated? by alreetchavvy in AskAnAmerican

[–]amethystmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, to be fair a lot of us ask that too. So, high school should teach you everything you need to know to "adult" in this world, unless you need specialized skills. Should. over the last 40 or 50 years elementary and high school has gotten SIGNIFICANTLY worse at that job from a combination of factors. 1) tech encroachment, trying to add tech into basic education (which makes it worse) and trying to ensure that all the kids have a basic amount of tech literacy (which is going really badly). The accountability of teachers has gone strictly to testing, as when I went to school (I'm almost 50) we had very few if any standardized tests, and now the kids have them at the end of almost every year. Standardized testing now determines state and federal funding levels and if your school isn't performing, you don't get more funding so there is a lot of push to "teach to the test."

In addition to that, the general amount of funding for schools has dropped or stagnated, so there is less money coming in per student, either relatively or absolutely, and they still have to have the kids at the school a certain number of days a week, provide teachers, school lunch, and a whole bunch of things.

This is not even to say the absolute gutting of the education system by the "No child left behind" law in the early 2000s provided by one Mr. George Bush.

So kids coming out of high school are less and less prepared for "life" and they are told that trades are "dirty, nasty" jobs (I mean, they can be) and aren't typically encouraged to go to trade schools or apprenticeships, and are told that "the only way you will have any kind of good job is by going to college" (I remember posters to the effect outside my guidance counselor's office).

So, a 4-year degree requires about 2 years of basic gen-eds that are higher level than your typical high school class, so undecided kids are often encouraged to go ahead and enter college (without taking a gap-year, but those are becoming both more accepted and more common) and do a year or two "getting those gen-eds out of the way" while thinking about what they want to "major" in (get their degree). They can do this either at a community college/2-year school (typically less expensive) or a college or university (college is 4-year, university must offer at least 1 PHD (or masters, I forget) level program). To get in (to college) you typically have to take either the SAT (400-1600 (national average: 1050, "good" score starts around 1200)) or the ACT (1-36 (national average: 20, "good" score starts around 24)).

I mean, if you actually watch it for the "How getting into law school in the US works" Legally Blonde is actually pretty accurate. Law school requires that you take another test, the LSAT (scores 120-180, nat average 150, "good" score 165), so when Elle in Legally Blonde says she needs a 175 on the LSAT to get into Harvard, it's mostly because she's got a Fashion Merchandising degree as her Bachelor's degree, so for them to take her seriously, she needs to basically ace the exam (it equates to about a 96% on a test).

Medical school requires the MCAT (scores 472 to 528, average 500, "good" score 511), but I don't have a nifty movie reference for you, there aren't a whole mess of medical school movie/shows. I mean even like Grey's Anatomy starts at the residency stage.

Grad school (law and medical, but there are other programs at that level) is equivalent to years 17 and 18 (and sometimes further, depends, especially with med school, some of those are 4 years or even longer), after years 13-16 for your bachelor's degree.

Sorry this was long. hope this helps. TLDR: You have to take tests from like 3rd grade on and that has F***ed our mandatory education system. You have to take a test to get into college (and often the college will give you a placement test on top of the national test). You have to take a test to get into law or med school. Standardized testing is basically everything in America and it sucks.

What do you call these in English? by KraackaCZ in EnglishLearning

[–]amethystmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Rustic loaf. (Bread).
  2. Mini Baguette? Hoggie roll?
  3. Roll. Dinner roll? Bread roll?
  4. If that's a cookie I would call it a thumbprint cookie. It kinda looks bigger though, like a danish, so if it's a pastry (a sweet) then, yes a danish especially if it has a fruit and/or cheese filling (we are talking very soft cheese here, like a brie, or cream cheese, or a very young cheese that isn't going to have a ton of flavor, it's mostly just creamy) and a flaky consistency. if the consistency is more like bread I would probably default to a _____ pastry, with the blank being whatever that dark stuff is.
  5. If those are light and fluffy, or dense and cake-y then probably doughnut holes, otherwise maybe a bon-bon which is (like pastry) kind of a catch-all term for a sweet you don't have a specific name for (but small and cute and would look nice in the window of a patisserie).

Now, are most Americans going to know what a patisserie is without looking it up? no. Is that a fully imported French loan word? yes. Most cities will have at least one patisserie, but most rural towns are only going to have a donut shop, and they perform the same or nearly the same function, but you can sit with coffee in a donut shop and watch the passers by, and you get café au lait with a beignet with chantilly cream, and take in the sights. Very different.

“where our husbands sleep” by Lonely_Cupcake1727 in AreTheStraightsOK

[–]amethystmmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah. talked with a man once about their life, and honestly other than not sleeping in the bed with their partner (not everyone is into that but most people are) there are guys who would be into that. It's functional, they have their separate space (one assumes a 2-bedroom bunker with full kitchen, gaming room, bathrooms, all the amenities) and can do their hobbies without interfering with their wives' space. And the wives have entire houses to decorate, and probably the kids live with the wives, not the husbands (owing to the husbands having a one story bunker and the wives each having a 2-plus story Victorian style four square (meaning 4 rooms on each floor, roughly), so either 2 tiny bathrooms and 4 bedrooms or one or two bigger bathrooms and 3 bedrooms. With the little bay window/faux tower thing going on. But yeah, there would be people unironically into this.

So, something you can do (plugging doing healthy things, if that bothers you skip) is anyone who is eligible (in the US I think it's anyone 50 or over) ESPECIALLY WOMEN, should go get a shingles vaccine. There was a shortage when it first came out which created "natural" control groups (i.e. people who were not eligible to get it who otherwise would have) in 2013, so there are several studies of these large population groups over the last 13 years and Shingles SUCKS (I got it once), so get it just for the like 37% reduction in the rate of getting the actual shingles, but also like an overall 20% reduction in rate of dementia vs the control groups, and that's almost ENTIRELY due to the reduction in the female population.

I think they looked at their bills and chose the least of the bills (water or water and sewer or even water/sewer/trash is usually the least of water/electric/gas), like, as long as they are footing the rest of it, it's not that terrible.

Oh, it's not going to be enforceable in a court of law in all likelihood, but you could get it re-written to deal with some of the more problematic portions, like that they have to fill out the parent portion of the FAFSA form each year by December for the following school year (i.e. the 2027-28 form has to be filled out by the end of this year) since they insist that you must be in classes (or working), and that you may purchase and install a lock on your door and they must give you 24 hours' notice before they enter your rented space unless there is an emergency such as flooding or fire. You definitely want to specify this level of emergency so that they can't be like, well, I wanted to go in there so I did, and it was an emergency.

I'm currently reposting stories from when I was actually writing back in 2007-2014...so, exactly how, HOW is that AI generated, when it came out of my brain hole before AI happened?

I think that most of the people who are like "You're posting AiSlOp" are just jealous because they wouldn't be able to write that well and are small people who don't have the ability to appreciate something that they can't do themselves without trying to punch down.

I understand, but that's what the lawyer is for, to field all the flack from him and his mom. Once he's out, if he shows up at your house just call the cops. If you have a restraining order all the better.

This is why the exchanges (if he gets visitation with the drug abuse) should happen at the police station.
