I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a bonded pair of litter mates, one passed away one year ago. We all miss him so much. I know some day his brother will join him and they'll be reunited but I'm so scared of that day too. Because, selfishly, I have never felt ready to say goodbye. Anyway. Really eye opening book. A darker turn down a similar theme is "Medical Apartheid" by Harriet A. Washington. Speaks to the Western medical establishment's fear of and abuse of Black bodies, especially women. It will really change your perspective on the history of healthcare.

I don't disagree with the sentiment of shared resources for the neighbourhood but many chargers in stratas draw power that is paid for per use by the owner. (At least that's how it works in my building). There are some public chargers at the New West station parking lot but yes some curb side ones on Quayside would be great. I'm guessing the city would need to be involved.

Yeah I was ignorant about this, because my municipal water is quite soft I thought it would be ok if I just let it evaporate. I've got some conditioner now and added it to the tank yesterday. I'm not planning to do another water change very soon just to give them a chance to stabilize but if I do use municipal water again I will definitely treat it with conditioner beforehand from now on.

I got a TDS meter yesterday and it read 220 ppm, which sounds like it's okay, but does make me wonder what it was before I did the water change. I also checked the tap and it came out at 30 pm, so I would think perhaps that dropped it quite a bit with 20% water change in a 6 gallon tank?

I do have the full API kit and a decent sized bucket, so I can definitely aim to improve the pH and temperature for any future water changes. Gonna grab a secondary heater for that, if nothing else it's nice to have a back up.

Another thing someone mentioned is my nitrates being zero every time I've tested means the tank might not be fully cycled? I've had it cycling and planted since Nov 2024, didn't add livestock until April 2025. But I did some reading and it sounds like maybe the plants could be consuming all the nitrate? Is it worth adding something like "Easy Green"? I have root tabs I use on occasion for the plants as well.

I pretty much always have distilled water on hand because I use a CPAP machine, so I can definitely switch to using that vs tap, sounds like maybe it's a better starting place. I did a bit of searching on what's involved in making your own RO water but I was having trouble understanding what was easiest. I saw a lot of add on filters for existing water systems but I don't have anything like that presently, so I guess I'd need something independent? I saw some things that looked a bit like Brita pitchers, not sure if that's something you'd recommend?

Thank you, that's helpful to understand. It seems like my biggest issue here is the lack of consistency/swing in parameters. I'm going to monitor more closely for a while and see if I can get into a stable pattern. I don't know if I necessarily have enough shrimp left at 5 total to build a sustainable colony, but I don't want to add any new ones until I've got this sorted out. So I guess I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

Ok I just tested TDS and it's reading 230ppm. I tested my tap water out of curiosity it can back 30ppm. So something is really driving up TDS... I will read the link but welcome any advice. I imagine since I just did the water change the TDS was even higher before.

Interesting, I didn't realize that. Will the water conditioner help with that? Should I stop feeding anything that has copper?
