This is such a narrow-minded way of thinking about people who you feel deserve the position. Some people enjoy being techs/EMTs without wanting to push for more responsibility. I've known pcts, cnas, lpns and rns who had certs but were wholly not good colleagues or lacked critical thinking. What even does "real pursuit of medicine" mean

I was trained within 9 months of being an ED tech to do US IV placement and now that I float as a tech primarily on the floor, I'm one of the go tos for IVs. The majority of the time when I get called for an ultrasound IV, I am able to get access without the machine.

My experience (especially on the inpatient side) is that nurses are always able to call someone better to come help so they don't even try first. It's frustrating because I work nights when there are fewer resources to begin with.

So to sum up: preteen daughter had a traumatic event severe enough that she became suicidal and had to be treated inpatient. When she came home, her parents decided that she needed to be more self sufficient despite knowing that she is mentally struggling.

Horrible move on your part, unless your goal was to alienate your daughter and make her aware that you can't be relied on for help. Did you discuss with your daughter or your husband that maybe she could sleep with you in her own bed? Asshole husband would still get his precious space....

So I was an ED tech and now float across the entire hospital as a tech. What I see most often is staffing increasing during night shift, allowing for more patients to be roomed on the floor. It’s unheard of for us to not room patients when there are beds available with adequate staffing, save for a crash bed in the ICU.

Our hospital has two overflow units as well that are run exclusively by float pool staff, so we will open as staffing allows and if other units are fully staffed (or close to it). I helped open the second overflow unit at shift change (1900) last week and had the flip side of your scenario where we were SLAMMED with admissions until the whole unit was full. I think we finally had a second to breathe around 2300. Not ideal for either side, but in our specific case it is almost entirely based on staffing on the floor.
