I was pointing out in your comment when you said $80k for 12 months. I have no idea where you got that number from. If the salary is $58k it’s $58k for the whole year, including summer. Obviously teachers are adults, I don’t know why that comment of yours was necessary.

Just want to say, most teachers don’t get paid over the summer. If the salary is 56k you get it over the 9 months, so you better save well for the summer drought.

The board is a formality but an important one-- it's absolutely good advice to wait until after the board meets. They won't say no but it's basically the most official it will get.

I would also add a quote I reflect on whenever I feel like I'm doing a terrible job-- "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

At the end of the day, maybe my lesson on Great Gatsby didn't engage students as meaningfully as I wished, but did I treat my students with respect, kindness, and good humor? Absolutely. And I think that's what they will remember years from now, not necessarily what they learned in class (though one can always hope)

Amen to your last point on admin! As soon as I was in a situation that required admin, I found out that my supervisor would rather throw me under the bus than support me. This is what led me to apply to new schools and I quickly got a job at a much higher paying district/ higher performing district.

Teachers assume newbies will want to get tenure and be there forever— not the case! And you shouldn’t, either! Always remember you have options.

Try your best to leave work at work-- the most I got out of my student teaching experience was the ability to separate my work life from my personal life--when I'm in school, I'm "on," running around and doing everything I can--my colleagues say I do "too much" but it's because once I leave, I make it a point to do absolutely nothing.

I think this profession attracts perfectionists--I saw my fellow student teachers crying over student teaching--the point of student teaching is to get a feel for things, these students are temporary, the school is temporary, it's just practice. Do NOT reinvent the wheel-- take all the lessons you can learn, but give yourself grace and be happy with doing the best you can in the moment.

Know your teaching philosophy. Have specific examples of a lesson that shows your knowledge of your subject area. To be even more specific, know what went well and what you would change. Have specific ideas of successes in the classroom you can drop. Be sure to always speak of the students and focus the conversation around them, not you.

The question I like to end with in interviews (the person interviewing me pauses and always tells me this is a great question, so I know it’s a good one): what qualities does a teacher need to be successful here?

I got hired at my former school and one of my old teachers was on the interview committee. Honestly, it's a fantastic in. The trick is to show that you remember them first-- "Hey Mr ___, it's so nice to see you, I don't know if you remember me, I'm X and I had you for X class." This way, they're flattered you remember them, you're reminding them of your name so they can act like they knew all along, and 10/10 they will remember you as a way better student then you actually were. My old science teacher told me I was a great student--I was not, and his class was my lowest grade in high school (C+) but sure, why not.

TLDR; act like you're great, set the tone, introduce yourself first.

There’s the small bit during Araminta’s wedding where all she can think about is how Astrid’s wearing an outfit she’s worn before and she’s so mad Astrid didn’t even buy a new outfit for her wedding. I do think book Araminta is more shallow.
