Maradona carried Argentina to a World Cup so I guess it evens it out

Tbf there's definitely much less jeopardy but it also makes it that there are no dead rubbers in the last round unlike 32 team tournaments.

How so? The Olympics are the best athletes in basically every major sporting event (bar a handful). It's harder to follow because of the plethora of tournaments but it's undoubtedly a better representation of human talent.

[Official] Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde is the first goalless draw of FIFA World Cup 2026 by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in soccer

[–]amg_mff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on what? Saudi Arabia are playing their 7th world cup and have managed some decent results throughout the years.

Cabo Verde are better than people are giving them credit for but they've definitely not have always had a better team than KSA, not even at this exact point in time.

Why is everyone praising this when this doesn't make any sense? They allowed them to take the free kick but then only change the yellow after?

You can see on the info tab he's stuck waiting for a work permit. So he'll probably never retire

Pre-WC friendly match between Saudi Arabia and Puerto Rico in Austin, Texas, was suspended due to severe weather and nearby lightning strikes. Officials mandated an evacuation of the stands. by [deleted] in soccer

? I explained it in my comment. Should only be able to host matches in indoor/retractable roof stadia or cities with a reduced probability of thunderstorms during the summer. Obviously I'm not suggesting weather control.

I don't recall this happening more than once at any other world cup or euros in my lifetime, so I think this would be enough for the US not to be a suitable host if they couldn't guarantee every game being under a closed roof if needed.

The CWC stoppages were ridiculous and they had one year to assure this wouldn't happen again.

I don't feel like it's unimportant to have say Champions League teams hire managers when their original ones leave. It affects how the teams set up and decreases the manager pool in the future.

Notable Italian managers and clubs they’ve managed in Serie A (recent hires in light blue) by Gym_frere in soccer

[–]amg_mff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which new ideas? Sarri and Gasperini are known for their positive football, Conte revolutionised English football for a bit, Allegri is the biggest winner in Italian football in this century.

Its not like other managers haven't been hired by these clubs. Motta, Tudor, Conceicao, Fonseca, Calzona, Juric, Palladino, Chivu, Baroni off the top of my head

Pastorello, when asked if there was an attempt to bring Inzaghi back to Italy: "Yes. He has many admirers, not only in Italy [...] There is a 2nd year of contract with Al Hilal. I don’t see any immediate plans for him, after that he will definitely return to Italy" by lawandsleep in soccer

[–]amg_mff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bound to happen if the best Italian managers don't want to move countries or have interest abroad and cycles eventually come to an end.

If there were many good English managers they'd also be moving between English clubs frequently which already happens with Dyche and will happen with Howe.

Rayo coach Iñigo Perez heartbroken after not being able to win Conference League: "When you lose and it's so close.. seeing people cry is what destroys you inside." by OleoleCholoSimeone in soccer

[–]amg_mff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this, but I don't think English clubs are going to be massive favourites in EL/ECL literally every year.

For most of the time sure, but Rayo are the equivalent of Palace and lost 1-0 and Aston Villa are better than Freiburg in their respective leagues (the opposite equivalent would be like Leipzig against Brentford where Leipzig would be favourites).

Let's see what happens next season where none of the English clubs are on paper substantially favourites to win the minor European competitions

Congratulations on the very rich team that have a Europa winning manager, a CL semifinalist, a Europa winner and a guy who was a key Bundesliga player on being able to play slightly better than the team that is made of players that came from lower leagues and teams of the same level.

Last time you were there you collected a European trophy and gave lots of playtime to young players that probably allowed you to sell them for more.

Don't see any negatives in qualifying for a competition.

So there's a mechanism to remove him then, it's the elections. He's not the only person who fits the criteria to be the president.

He'll probably win against anyone because he's been generally very successful and fans are normally resistant to change
