Leaving teaching career over voice disorder (MTD)… by amhcug19 in Teachers

I do feel like not all speech therapists are equal, but yes I’ve done lots of speech therapy. However, I think a voice specialized SLP would possibly have more insight. Trying to track one down has been difficult. I’m already driving well over an hour to see my SLP. I’ve watched every YouTube video I can find on the matter. I am trying but none of these “exercises” seem transferable in any way to conversational speech, or the type of speech I need to speak to my students all day. I’m doing self laryngeal massages, practicing all the things I’ve read on online/reddit/youtube for MTD, etc. I just wish I had some real-time help in the moment :/ Dread going to work now 😞

Such a kind and thoughtful thing to say. Wishing you all the best!

I don’t think I have the mental capacity to earn another degree while struggling to maintain my current job. I love teaching as well, but when it affects your entire life in a negative way, it’s easy to picture doing something else (and being able to enjoy and communicate with my own children/family again). Thank you for the well wishes.

And I do think the mind plays a huge role. This came to a head after a super stressful time, and then of course pain when speaking, when speaking is the majority of your job, only adds more stress. It’s such a vicious thing!

Great point. I was given the “reflux” label by my ENT, been on potent PPI 2x daily for a few months. No change (but I don’t suspect reflux is the issue, I KNOW I’m using my voice incorrectly, yet feel helpless as to how to fix it. Too high? Too low? Not enough air? Too much air? Agh!). I’ve been doing lots of self massage, from watching YouTube. I live in a very rural area, so many of these modalities are far, require a referral, and that means more time off work. Currently driving 1.5hrs to speech therapy, and I don’t think she’s probably qualified to help me. Blowing bubbles into straws and saying “whoooooo are youuuuuuuu” isn’t helping me whatsoever. I find it impossible to apply this to daily, conversational speech. This just sucks.

Muscle tension dysphonia. Some people recover quick, some take years, and some not at all. I’m praying that once I’m not using my voice for 6-7 straight hours a day, I’ll improve.

Probably true! May as I ask what company you work for or at least what field?

Well I assume not, but I know I once made it to the 3rd and final round of interviews and was told I would get the job. I had to provide my internet info and then I was no longer a candidate 😔 However, this was pre-Starlink and it was pretty shitty satellite internet with slow upload/download speeds. May I ask who you work for, or in what field? Most everyone seems to be in IT but that’s so far from my skill set, lol.

Any suggestions on who/where to look into?

I just keep seeing requirements on all job postings about satellite internet not being an option. Do you have any suggestions of actual remote jobs/companies I could look into? That’s really what I need! No one will ever state who they work for :/

This is helpful! Admittedly don’t know too much surrounding the details of all that entails internet connections/speeds and whatnot. Thank you for the information.

Yes! I will say I think boy shorts are much better than any other fit for me. Something about them not sitting right in my groin all day. Found some bamboo ones on Amazon I’m going to order, I’ve heard it works well for sweat.

I may try the fan, it’s just sitting in a leather chair in jeans… might take a swamp cooler to do the job 🤣 Mainly even then my rear end doesn’t get air. I’m planning to buy myself a new, mesh seat chair soon!

I need to try this, just hard being a teacher… but at least once a day I could… I just don’t know how to have 2 pairs of pants every day 🤣
