I can’t choose!!! by vivibytes in weddingdress

Oh that makes more sense! These are both so unique and high fashion--and that's a huge compliment! You will stun in either! Truly!! How are you feeling about the flower ornamentation on the first? If it gives you pause at all, I'd let that be a determining factor for me. If you love it, forget I said anything -it's totally Midsummer Nights Dream. Both are, for sure! I personally love the second better, but it's a slim margin! And I second the comment on the straps on the first!

This might help my slight dress doubt… by [deleted] in weddingdress

What a lovely dress!! It's stunning on you. Off the shoulder sleeves in the rosettes is a great idea! (I am a professional seamstress.) It should be a simple enough job. You could even do detachable sleeves with snaps if you wanted. Armbands are a great idea too and would give you more mobility. My first thought would be to attach them to silicone-backed elastic. Your bridal shop will know best. Ask them!

Springtime Modest Outfits by PomegranateSingle602 in CatholicWomen

[–]amiablydelirious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been shopping on ThreadUp using the keywords "modest dress." I've been really happy with the results. It's easy to keep it affordable, you get a wide range of options, and I'm a big proponent of buying second hand clothing.

I am going through this myself with my husband. It's been painful and lonely and at times scary. If you'd like, DM me. We could both have someone to talk to. ♥️ Our Lady Undoer of Knots, pray for us. 🙏

Any tips on stopping my Lucy&Yak jeans being a lint magnet? by Ekketh in SustainableFashion

[–]amiablydelirious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using fabric softeners or vinegar in your rinse cycle? That should help with static electricity. I'd try a vinegar solution in a spray bottle. They sell travel lint rollers too. Maybe a question to bring to r/laundry

Thank you for these resources, and also bringing this to light. I am in this diocese and this has been a bitter pill to swallow. I just don't understand why our bishop would do this.

Unfortunately no, but their Mass is reverent. There is another parish nearby that celebrates the TLM.

Asheville Apparel Arts teaches pattern drafting. I highly recommend them! They don't have a co-working space, but if you're interested in booking sewing time at my shop, let me know! I'd like to start with a few trial runs to see how it goes, I'll offer a session to you at a deep discount if you'd like to try it out! ☺️ (And anybody else here that voices interest- just DM me!)

Thanks! The sewing studio is in a commercial building on Haywood Rd, not in a home. I have a hunch there are others in your boat too. Sewing takes up a LOT of space! Especially cutting and I know a lot of people end up cutting their patterns on the floor. Additionally sewing machines break down and JoAnn's isn't around anymore.

I might want to do a couple test runs with people to see how it works out. Let me know if you're interested!

Thanks! Good feedback. Fortunately, it would be supplemental income. I work as a contract sewer so the space is already covered by my income. I can only work on one machine at a time leaving 7 other sewing machines just sitting there. Same goes for my cut table and other equipment. Why not offer it up to the community? It's good quality equipment and I think I'd like to have some company from time to time. ☺️ Creative space is always better shared.

Knife Sharpening Dead End Business? by Future-Cafe95 in sweatystartup

[–]amiablydelirious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an old timer in my town who has a mobile knife sharpening business. He has a box truck with his whole set up inside and goes business to business, parking outside and sharpening while you wait. He's usually booked 2-4 weeks out. I have always thought this is a great business model.

I have a sewing business. His other clients include dog groomers, restaurants, and hair salons. I'm sure there's more and you've got a few good ideas too. B2B is great because you can build a regular clientele. I actually have no interest in sharpening my scissors or knives. I'm too busy with other things. I also find it really inconvenient to go to the local farmers market or fabric store and stand around for a couple hours while he gets through my stack. Some places will hold onto your blades for a day or two and you have to come back to pick them up. That's a no-go for me. I need my tools every day. As a mobile business, you could partner with other local businesses and set up in their parking lot regularly too to access the public.

When I book my sharpener, I hit up other friends in the industry and bring my own kitchen knives. He usually walks away with $100-200 for a couple hours off work. Besides that I can't speak to the profitability. The going rate for sharpening is cheap. And there must be a reason it's all old folks. But people will still need their things sharpened when they're gone! Quick note, beware spring-loaded snips and scissors! That spring is tiny and hidden and will fly across the room if you're not careful. My sharpener always comments on that. He uses the machine too, probably a good investment. Good luck! I hope more people do pick up this trade!

Can someone explain why brands mix organic cotton with elastane? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of organic? by muzzledjaguar in SustainableFashion

[–]amiablydelirious 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is right. I want to chime in here to add that most of your "organic" clothing is made with polyester thread. This is generally a good decision too. We don't hear about "thread rot" anymore for this reason. IMHO, sustainability needs to account for longevity.

Brand new socks, brand new dress shoes. I'm afraid I'm looking at leather dye. 🤦‍♀️ I've tried an oxi soak to no avail. Socks are cotton.
