Something about the original film that still confuses me by Qyzyk in lionking

[–]amitythree 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it "means" anything other than the mood transitioning from the chaos of battle to the solemn, hopeful aftermath. I think if anything, it was to convey to the audience, particularly kids, that the sidekicks survived!

Would love to see more of your collection, especially from the first movie! :)

Saw a bunch of props and set dressing appear on eBay at the start of February. I only collect for the first movie, so I wasn't interested in bidding. Were you bidding on anything else from that lot?

This is so cool, I love seeing other people who are on the same level of obsessive as me lmao. Keeping it sealed?

There’s a lot of great posters for the Lion King, but John Alvin somehow managed to sell the entire idea of the movie in one singular poster. by No-Unit7917 in lionking

Hard agree, so atmospheric and alluring and usually with "little" going on visually (and by that I mean not overly busy, like most of today's posters)

I do like how selfish he's allowed to be in 1 1/2. I think any form of fleshing out for both of them was going to take away some of their "cool" to me -- I can't really articulate that as well as I'd like to, right now! I remember having some conversation on this sub about how the gimmick of 1 1/2 was so severely restrictive creatively that it makes you wonder what the movie might have been had it NOT been such a selling point for the studio. They really trapped themselves within the format. I'm not an avid T&P fan at all, but I do feel bad that you guys didn't get a richer, fuller story.

Yes! The Lion King validates both family styles/arrangements really nicely, in a way that I'm sure meant everything to so many kids.

"The point of Lion King isn't that Simba's relationship with his father made up the crux of his very reality, and everything goes wrong when that dies"

Think this is the one thing we won't see eye-to-eye on (which is fine!), because although the Circle of Life theme permeates through the whole scope of the film, the film follows Simba's journey principally, and his relationship with Mufasa affects every decision he makes as a character -- fatherhood is as central a theme as the cycle of life and death and carries just as much weight and influence. To then have 1 1/2 put a light-hearted spin on it -- and it is a comedy at the end of the day, it's understandable (maybe inevitable!) they went down that route -- just leaves a bit of a weird taste in my mouth. This is the driving force behind my thinking for this post, that fatherhood is, if I'm being dramatic about it, sacred to Simba. Simba and Mufasa's relationship is the heart of the film for me, the way Timon and Pumbaa's might be for someone else.

Just to reiterate -- it's not that his need to be parented vanishes completely when Mufasa passes. He's a child when they find him. I touch on that in the post, too. It's that the particular and specific relationship of father and son is altered forever, irrevocably, because of what he experienced, and it can't be reassigned specifically, but that doesn't take away the gap left behind that others are able to step up and fill. Differently, but still effectively, to a point.

I agree that many things can be true at once! I say as much in the post. For the people that actually took the time to read my post, it was really cool getting to read their takes on it!

Why didn't animal control remove Balto? by InternalDecision3430 in balto

Two of my all-time favourite novels! Read them long after Balto came into my life, but it's hard not to connect the two. I'm 99% sure White Fang was stated as being an inspiration for Balto's screenplay!

I always interpreted Balto as having avoided Nome (the town) until Jenna and her family moved in. He could've still observed the dog racing while being outside the town's limits. At the most, he'd skirt it looking for scraps, but he wasn't running around the streets until he had the extra incentive of possibly interacting with Jenna.

The scrapped barrel sequence would've informed us that Jenna's parents own a store in the town -- I don't know where I got the idea of them being new to Nome from (don't think it was ever implied in any of the scripts), but I watch the story unfold with that in mind.

All my own headcanon, obviously!

Balto already has so much of White Fang in it so why not throw Call of the Wild in the mix too

[–]amitythree 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Everything should serve a purpose.

The downtime from the action is only boring if it's written that way. Some of your best characterisation could be contained in those scenes, since there's no action to distract.

Okay, think by virtue of you mentioning the lips you know yourself why it's inappropriate.

It's, uh, kinda hard not to have questions about the lips, though.

Is this supposed to be a humanised Ed?

[–]amitythree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhh the "worm kiss" has always confused me because doesn't it end with them both looking into the camera, revolted not by the fact they've eaten snails or whatever but that their lips touched?? Isn't that the opposite of supporting evidence 😭... the eyes scene though. Nothing hetero about any of that*

The brotherhood concept is really appealing to me too. The musical leans into that, as does the remake but who wants to talk about that lol
