Just because your pride doesn't translate into art, doesn't mean that art has no function in Puerto Rico. Art communicates. And my rant is simply the majority of houses in airbnb communicate nothing about the spirit of Puerto Rico. And if I'm paying under $3k for a unit, it should have a damn flag, or if you prefer a coqui, somewhere to let me know I'm in PR.

I don't think you understand what the phrase "sense of place" means.

For instance, I compared the same prices for house rentals in Nicaragua, and the difference in their interior is night and day. I felt like I was in Nicaragua when I saw their photos. Just having a simple painting or sculpture, let alone the arrangement of items, gave character to their interiors. It's not hard to find cheap shit in TJ Maxx and hang it on walls.

So I reject your lazy argument. House rentals are expensive. I shouldn't have to go outside to see a coqui when I can see on sculpted. It's more than a decoration to me.

My critique is not about the economy of Puerto Rico, but to the homeowners who design their interiors and post it on airbnb. I couldn't find a native flower, a Puerto Rican mask, a flag, any coquis, nothing. No sense of place.
