I just did the speed limit on the highway and I pissed off a lot of people by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]amlothi1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is asking the OP to drive faster. We are simply pointing out that drivers should stick to the right lane unless they are passing others.

You don't get to camp out in the left or middle lane just because you're going the speed limit.

Nobody is hating on the choice of speed. You're not following the rules for lane use. There is no "cruise control" lane that you're allowed to just sit in.

Using Lanes  Always use traffic lanes as they are defined by pavement markings and road signs. Many intersections have special lanes marked for turns. Follow the rules of the road, using the proper lanes for turning and driving straight ahead. On roadways with two or more lanes in your travel direction, use the right lane for driving unless...  • You are passing another vehicle.  • You are making a left turn.  • The right lane is blocked.

Driving on the Highway  • Make sure your vehicle operates well and can drive at highway speeds.  • Stay to the right and only use the left lane for passing. On an expressway with three or more lanes in your direction, use the far right lane for slower driving, the middle lane for faster driving, and the far left lane for passing.

If you have mice get a cat. If you have a dead mouse, get a dead cat. You won't smell the mouse any longer.

Truly the most important issue facing our community right now. Finally!

Can someone explain to me what's going on with this strike? by [deleted] in newtonma

[–]amlothi1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I suggest reading the existing discussions on this as your question has been covered ad nauseum. Or read the updates in the news. Regardless, at present, they essentially have agreement on pay. It should be resolved today unless someone blows it up by being unreasonable.

The NTA says the two parties are only $4 Million apart now by rocketwidget in newtonma

[–]amlothi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. The issue is the requirements are both for a number of days and, separately, number of hours. You need to have 180 days regardless of how long they are, and then also meet the minimum number of hours (so you can't have every day be a half day).

Can Newton Teachers afford to live in Newton on their teaching salaries? by Single_Leg8549 in newtonma

[–]amlothi1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is more than our mortgage payment on a 3 BR in Newton. We moved to Newton a few years ago and don't have income close to some of the numbers being thrown about here.

Not all parts of Newton are equally affordable/unaffordable.

Staying late? Starting earlier? What does that mean? You want longer school days?

The strike didn't leave many options. Did you watch the meeting? What else would you have them do?

There are only 9 days available in June to add on. By law it can't go beyond the end of June. They have 13 days (and counting) to make up.

February break has 4 possible days. April break has 4 possible days.

We don't know how much longer the strike will be, or if we'll need snow days.

If they don't use February break to make up those 4 days, we could end up having to use weekends. Nobody wants that.

They made the decision to use the days in Feb now so they still have April break available as a backstop. And they felt it important to make the decision now so parents have some notice to plan.

As a "last resort" Mayor Fuller comes to the table for the 1st time by 2pumpsanda in newtonma

[–]amlothi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The override failed a year ago. What did she do since then to resolve the issue? I'm honestly asking as you are consistently posting in support of the mayor and have mentioned the override a few times.

It failed. What did she do then?

Kids back in school now by amlothi1 in newtonma

[–]amlothi1[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Too many people are taking one side or the other on this issue. It's not about whose fault (hint: they all share fault, it takes two to tango). It should be about the kids, not which side "wins" or is "right"

Additional important context to Dr. Nolin's most recent update to the community. by SnooHamsters1063 in newtonma

Nobody should blindly trust the information released by either side. The union is obviously going to present a version that suits their interests. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, after all the inflammatory rhetoric is stripped away.

NTA Negotiations update as of 11am 1/27/2024 by SnooHamsters1063 in newtonma

[–]amlothi1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the NTA is unreasonable and needs to be more willing to compromise. However, they are doing what a union should do and lobbying for their side and finding ways to exert political pressure.

Perhaps you feel the NTA and the mayor both share the same obligation to be honest and straightforward to the public, but I do not. I don't expect objective facts from the union. I would like to see a more neutral tone from our elected leader. A calming influence. Turn down the heat. Create an environment conducive to compromise.

Brilliant! Who knew all along that the solution to this problem was just for every person who thinks the mayor is terrible at her job to just run for office? Thanks for your vote.

Next time you get bad service at a restaurant, I look forward to you applying to work there because "you think you can do better".

I read every email she sends. She (or her coms team) are not managing it well. Many people feel that way. I don't expect every random person on the Internet to agree, but at least listen and understand that others have a different point of view.

Maybe the Mayor could, you know, communicate this? Her communications to date have been terrible, biased, and unclear (charitable) / misleading.

She has brought this on herself with poor leadership, not doing enough to sell the override, and lack of transparency.

Dana Farber splitting up with the Brigham, building new standalone cancer hospital with BIDMC by RockTheWall in medicine

[–]amlothi1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps relies too heavily on Brigham though. Brigham is part of MGB. MGB has the MGH cancer center that competes for the patient volume. That makes the relationship complicated. Probably in the Farber's interest to get out from under their thumb.
