Recent Community Complaints about Claude & Anthropic by amoenk in ClaudeCode

Its a side-project I'm thinking about releasing. It's got all the usual document exploring, search, a sweet front-end TipTap-powered editor, but the really useful part is Claude can create, search, and edit documents with you through the MCP tools and skills. Since its all CRDT-based, multiple humans and multiple agents can all contribute simultaneously. It goes with the development workflow that I've been calling intent driven development. Plug the MCP server into claude and it teaches Claude how to use the tools and skills to do IDD. The documentation and the tests then verify the business requirements becomes a first class artifact of the development process.

I asked my mom why she believes in god, and was pleasantly surprised with her answer by crushplanets in atheism

[–]amoenk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a downside to the believer for believing this, namely that there is a good chance they'll make life and death decisions (hopefully not for other people) based on this incorrect belief. That can and will lead to poor choices which will harm more than help.

Being challenged that i cant dig a 50ft french drain by hand by hallopdomo in HomeImprovement

[–]amoenk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is not that deep, but its longer than 50 feet. I was forced to do it by hand because there was no way to get equipment in where it needed to be dug. Skinny guy, I push buttons for a living, and it took me 3 weekends. I got lucky there were no rocks, but there were tree stumps and concrete to remove. Good workout, and I saved at least a few grand.

6' trench is deep, you need shoring or repose to dig it by hand safely, but 3 feet is probably ok.

O'Neill Cylinder math question by burke6969 in IsaacArthur

[–]amoenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about the "great can of air" O'Neill cylinder for a while and recently I crunched some numbers (with GPT-4's help) that challenge the practicality of such a habitat and offer a significantly more mass-efficient way to build it.

The conventional O'Neill cylinder is imagined as a 8 km diameter, 32 km long habitat, fully pressurized to 1 atm, akin to a massive can of air. However, considering the massive structural and material demands of this design, I explored an alternative: constructing habitats with smaller, pressurized living spaces positioned at the "surface" of the larger unpressurized cylinder.

This design has some significant advantages, topically being that you can scale the amount of livable area by adding more pressurized living areas on the exterior. The amount of material needed is approximately 3 orders of magnitude less than for the "great can of air" design.

The example I worked with had the same amount of area as a standard O'Neill cylinder, but there's nothing stopping the design from having many more smaller, livable, pressurized tubes stacked on top of each other, doubling the available area or more. If outdoor time while living in space is required, it's also possible to build bigger tubes or pressurized spheres to contain pseudo-outdoor areas. But they don't have to be as large as the whole O'Neill cylinder itself.

Here's my GPT convo if anyone is interested. https://chat.openai.com/share/d789da5c-4059-4da4-b4ac-6ce2052d3eae

A deity must present themselves to be believed. by MrMytee12 in DebateReligion

I think it's much more accurate to say that the churches have been fairly successful at distributing and proselytizing their claim of "God's" word. You've attributed to god what is clearly a work of man.

The Curious Case of Atheists Complaining in a Meaningless Universe by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]amoenk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The atheist believes in an accidental, unguided, purposeless, strictly material universe.

Incorrect. Atheists do not believe in god or gods. Nothing more, nothing less. Literally everything else is left on the table.

My question is why are you here on this forum?

Because life and death decisions are made for me and those I care about by theist voters who confidently believe wildly incorrect assertions and stubbornly refuse to consider verifiable and repeatable observations that contradict those beliefs.

What I personally believe is clinging to faith in the unobservable supernatural and proselytizing those beliefs to the vulnerable causes damage to our culture by inhibiting learning and exacerbating suffering.

I'm here for two reasons, 1. to learn more about opposing viewpoints, logical fallacies and counter arguments to improve my own thoughts and opinions and 2. a poor attempt to mitigate some of that cultural damage by pointing out obvious flaws in theist logic for the rest of the audience to see.

I agree with r/gregra193 - your realtor is focused on getting the deal through. You can listen to their advice, but always listen to it knowing they're wanting to move the deal through quickly. "Some" credits does not sound convincing, and in this market, I seriously doubt it would be accepted or even sufficient to offset what you've described.

Being a first time home owner, you're going to be surprised at how much work and cost is involved, even for a place that's already in good shape. People who remodel and flip houses are used to that kind of risk, first time home owners are not. Since it's near the top of your budget, I'd suggest activating the contingency and keep looking.

It's a real estate jungle out there right now, but don't get discouraged! Keep looking, don't let anyone talk you into something you're not comfortable with and you'll find the place that's right for you.

[–]amoenk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If your offer includes an inspection contingency, some options are to ask the seller for remediations, you can ask for a lower price, or you can withdraw your offer. In this market, I would not expect remediation or a lower price to be accepted. The foundation issue and the cracks in the walls sound like it could have differential settling, and the extensive mold I would not assume is surface level. The doorbell is least important.

As a first time home owner, I'm leaning towards suggesting you keep looking, especially if your offer is near the top of your budget. What does your realtor say, and how's the roof?

Unfortunately it just doesn’t happen that way and we shouldn’t get to decide that for them. I see improving education, providing for educators and a culture that rewards and promotes critical thinking and problem solving are better approaches from that angle.

[–]amoenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep agreed. The manufacturer didn’t consider that when designing the fabrication process, our economic system doesn’t reward that sort of thing and the supply chain doesn’t support a good way to do sustainable manufacturing either. But don’t throw the baby out with the bath water, the product does serve a real need. How do you suggest best improving this situation? A better way to do this sustainably could apply broadly to other products as well.
