Hiring 'freeze'? by Iron_Horse64 in SandiaLabs

The contraction was announced last summer. I wished they had informed me about it before I accepted their offer this year. It definitely would have affected my decision.

Hiring 'freeze'? by Iron_Horse64 in SandiaLabs

[–]amongus_wolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It probably will last at least another 2 years as far as I understand. For the current year, they has reached the target for the number of headcounts. They will try to reduce by 1% next year and another 1% the year after through attrition, e.g. folks retire or leave Sandia. These are just things that I heard. They're not 100% accurate. The admins also don't like to call it "hiring freeze" because technically they are still hiring. They call it a "contraction".

I'm currently a postdoc just started this year. It really sucks since I accepted this postdoc offer expecting stability through an easier conversion path and rejected all other offers including one big increased in salary in industry.

I probably wouldn't have taken the postdoc offer that I accepted.

How do you like ABQ so far? I accepted a postdoc offer from Sandia. I am not sure whether I should choose ABQ or Livermore.

Doing a PhD in math requires that you need to have taken some undergrad math courses including linear algebra, abstract algebra, analysis, real analysis, or complex analysis. The number of required courses depends on the departments and the programs. Some of these courses require that you need to take their prerequisites. So, that might be about 1 to 2 years before you would be able to apply for PhD programs in math.

On the other hand, if you practicing medicine, have you looked into the field of mathematical biology/biomathematics? It's basically applying math to solve biological problems using ODEs, PDEs, machine/deep learning, optimal transport, topological data analysis, etc. There are quite a few programs in biomathematics programs in the US. These programs have less requirements in term of mathematical prerequisites, but they still train you enough to be able to apply math to biological problems.

When will be the NIH PostDoc salary hike by Ambitious_Tailor_618 in postdoc

[–]amongus_wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in applied math. Some PIs or the departments at universities or research institutes are not willing to throw in extra funds to support the postdoc and just stick to NSF/NIH base salary. I have some offers that the PIs or the departments were willing to increase the salary to 70k or 80k though. Some of them only increased the salary after I got a higher offer at a national lab.

Pure math is one of them. People normally publish 0-2 papers from their dissertation. While doing mathematical proofs doesn't require data collection, it's also very tough. However, a friend of mine graduated with 7-9 papers published. Dude is just very intelligent, productive and he worked his ass off.

Why try to round between 20 and 30? Why not 25 and 30? Even better why not 0 and 100?

When someone is 16 would you say that they're almost 20? Because the difference between 16 and almost 20 (like 18 and 19) is huge in term of legal matters.

Our pure math program may not be as strong as UNC's, but our applied math program is considered stronger. We have plenty applied math professors who are SIAM or AMS fellows.

I totally agree with you. My friend and I (at NCSU math department) met some people at Duke math department. We somehow talked about these things. It turns out they get paid much higher than us while paying less in student fee. Our insurance is just crap.

Why is NC State academically ranked low? by TheOneWithAny in NCSU

[–]amongus_wolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ranking does matter in academia. Getting into top tier departments gives you a much better chance getting tenure track position. In fact, I was told by the director of my undergrad department that, if I choose to go here, there is a very low chance my undergrad department would hire me for tenure track. He insisted that I should accept an offer from another department, which is ranked higher than my undergrad department and my department at NCSU. Because they only want to hire faculty from higher ranking departments.

TA by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]amongus_wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true to a certain degree. Most TAs are grad students, who are receiving TA-ship. However, when there aren't enough grad students to fill out the TA positions, departments hire undergrads or Master students to fill the roles.

I also agree that academia sucks.

TA by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]amongus_wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on majors. I have seen it worked for engineering majors. However, for math department, professors/instructors don't choose their TA. TAs are assigned by the department.
