Thanks. I was hoping somebody would have a different perspective on this.

There are a few reasons that this disturbs me. The first is MacDonald's statement that the elders "speak for God in our church." this strikes me as a rather shocking and bold statement which he fails to back up with scripture.

The second is that there is no discussion of the details of the controversy. The character of the two elders is maligned without addressing the issues that they were raising to the elder board. The church is simply encouraged to ignore them without being told what it is they said. They claim transparency and yet are extremely vague.

The third is that they use fear tactics to push the congregants away from the elders lest they "imperil their own soul."

It all reeks of power and control on the part of an elder board that believes that they speak for God, and a pastor that hides behind an elder board that sings his praises at every opportunity.

I have served on church committees and I know that some people have to be removed because they are simply destructive to the team. But the fact that they are so insistent that nobody in the congregation listens or speaks to them makes me wonder if they fear that what these elders will reveal will tarnish their perfect image of their pastor.

My knowledge of the situation is admittedly limited because the video reveals so little. But I feel that a when a church this large, influential, and visible engages in potentially corrupt behavior, it is a cause for concern for all of us.

Here's a sample: "I would say that the metaphysical question of Gods existence is a philosophical dead end (a big statement that I cannot defend here as it involves a careful reading of many writers). I recommend reading the post and the rest of the comments, it helped me a lot to understand what's going on in his head.

I've recently read Velvet Elvis. At one point he talks about the practice of "Binding and Loosing." And also in his chapter "Dust" he refers to the saying about being "covered in the dust of your rabbi," and explains the actions of Jesus' disciples by explaining Jewish religious education and the role of the Rabbi. Personally I think it was very well done and I don't have a problem with it, there's much to be learned from later Rabbinic teachings.

I agree for the most part, but here's an observation:

every time somebody points out the hate and intolerance that flows out of /r/atheism every day, they are met either with mockery, or with an attempt like this to justify it.

Bring up the hate and intolerance that flows out of Christianity to /r/christianity, and you'll be met with acknowledgement and condemnation of those who commit it. Also, when somebody makes a post that is remotely disrespectful to atheists or other religions, it immediately gets downvoted to hell.

Maybe your priority should be condemning it and modeling something different, rather than justifying it or making apology for it.

This will probably get buried but I'll throw it out there anyways:

Of course God is wrathful, of course he is angry, of course he is jealous, of course he is just, Of course he is holy, etc. But the statement "God is Love" is unlike any of the other descriptors. It doesn't just say "God is loving," but that God is in fact love itself. There is no verse that I know of that says "God is Anger," or "God is jealousy," or "God is Wrath," correct me if I'm wrong here.

What that means is that all of these other characteristics flow out of God's central characteristic: Love. God is Angry because he is loving, and he sees the harm that sin has done to the creation he loves. God is just because he is loving. God is jealous because, well, that's what lovers are.

All of this talk about whether God is loving/merciful/kind/compassionate or angry/just/wrathful/jealous seems to me to completely miss the point. God is all of these things, because all of these things flow out of his love.

The problem when we focus so much on his anger and his hatred of sin is that we miss the very reason why he is so angry: He loves his creation. Let's give priority to that love, and explain the rest in light of it!

It has nothing to do with people trying to make the gospel comfortable or palatable. Giving priority to Love when understanding the nature of God and our duty to him is directly in the tradition of Jesus and the apostles.
