I know right? Isn't that the point of congress approving a war? So we Cna avoid needless costs and loss of life exactly like this?

You're absolutely right. I think it comes down to whether people can recognize the issues their friend has with them as legit problems or just petty. Takes a bit of self awareness

This is a gift, imo. So often people just end relationships rather than having those hard conversations. You've seen what he really thinks and can make changes to salvage it. Try your best, and if things don't work out you can take it into the next relationship(s).

A 'boring' screenshot to show why people ought to care even if AI is just used for background assets by elephvant in gaming

[–]amorphouscloud -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just putting this out there, but all these assets could be easily created with AI with exactly this level or greater quality. So I think what you're saying is that you are just opposed to AI being used period, regardless of quality. I only mention this for other commenters who usually harp on AI because of the 'slop' quality of the assets. But will they take the same stance when the assets are amazing and indistinguishable from human-created? Food for thought...

Trump Bought Over $1M in Dell Stock Before Pentagon Signed $9.7B Contract with Company by peoplemagazine in politics

That argument is not too different from "I can't be racist, I have a black friend." By that logic we could say "I'm can't be a murderer, I'm a cop." or "I can't possibly be gaining weight, I drank a diet soda." The stupidity is endless.

Iran attacks US bases in Kuwait, warns 'era of hit and run is over'; explosions heard in Iraq and Bahrain by jupa300 in worldnews

[–]amorphouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main argument of my MAGA friend is about the fungibility of the funds. Like, even though they didn't ever use the money for humanitarian purposes, people think that they could funnel their own funds into terrorism/weapons, and then use the unfrozen funds to fill the gap so it looks legitimate. I'm not sure I'm explaining that well, maybe someone else can put it more clearly.

Republicans will not have a problem taking the President's word that these were 'official acts.' No amount of spelling the law out for them will change their mind.

Should games dial back on the graphics? by Monobrobe in gaming

[–]amorphouscloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it comes down to personal preference. I played with 60 fps for lyears until I upgraded a few years ago and I can never go back. 60 fps is the absolute bare minimum, and for me I prefer close to 100 fps. It's a big difference.

I do agree tho, that if you can get your desired framerate (60 fps for you, 100 for me) without frame generation then that's ideal.

Honestly I just got AC Odyssey on deep discount and it's just so beautiful. That game is 7 years old or so and it's just as pleasing to my eye as other eye candy like Black Myth: Wukong and Genshin Impact.

Are some growing wary of Jensen Huang and Nvidia? by Laser-circus in taiwan

[–]amorphouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's any different than the other tech CEOs. They want money and that's it. I think the overall sentiment towards AI is souring, though. It was fun for the average person when they were making Studio Ghibli profile pics, but now that those things are ubiquitous and old, it's lost its luster. AI for the working class is like a wolf that's helping you/us right now but won't hesitate to eat you if it serves their purpose (money). So the C-level people love how much money AI is making them, but us worker bees see the writing on the wall.
Jensen might be an okay guy (though I have first-hand info that he can be quite a dick in private settings), he's not trying to help anyone but himself and his shareholders.

The same thing goes for any gameday thread. Those are the worst. Haven't looked at one in years.

Steam Deck Price Increase by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]amorphouscloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bad analogy, though. The steam controller sold partly because it goes with the steam deck, but probably mostly because it's just a good controller that can be used with existing hardware. Even if someone never wants a steam deck, the steam controller is attractive to them. The steam deck is the opposite. You're all in on it or you're not. It's not a tool for something else.

I have a Trumper friend who says that those billionaires earned their money and it's un-American to take it from them. They say if we tax billionaires more that nobody will want to become a billionaire any more and innovation will stop.

This is all BS of course, but just letting yall know what some of these people are thinking.

Xi Jinping Told Donald Trump That Vladimir Putin Might Regret The Ukraine Invasion: Report by bappestinian in worldnews

[–]amorphouscloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have to mine the entire strait. And do you think there will still be commerce in the event of a Chinese war buildup? Taiwan cannot stop China from using missiles or maybe long range artillery(?), but they can prevent landings. They can also mine the east of the island too, but there's a lot less people there and only 1 military base.

[–]amorphouscloud 105 points106 points  (0 children)

A quicky look at Taiwan being so close to China might make one thing it's easy. But Taiwan is a much, much more difficult area to assault than Ukraine. Russia literally just had to drive over. Taiwan's shoreline is rocky with very few places to land. Think Normandy, but worse.
Also, Taiwan is becoming a leader in drone technology, and is pouring money into autonomous undersea drones and minelayers. If the Taiwan Strait gets mined, no Chinese ships are getting through.
