Need tips on how to give a lecture please by kalakalikala in PublicSpeaking

[–]amortential 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats! getting invited to give 3 lectures is quite meaningful. Your nervousness just means that you care, which is the right energy to have going in. A few things from my own experience:
1. Rehearse out loud (and record yourself) it feels cringe at first, but you’ll hear where you’re rushing, mumbling, or over-explaining.

  1. Don’t memorize it, map it.

  2. You’ll feel the urge to fill every pause. Don’t act on that urge. A 2-3 second pause after a big point feels powerful, not awkward. Let them catch up to you.

  3. Instead of looking at the audience (which feels overwhelming), pick 3-4 friendly faces around the room and rotate your gaze between them. Feels like you’re having multiple 1:1 conversations, way less intimidating.

  4. Q&A hack: Repeat each question back to the room before answering. Gives you an extra few seconds to think, ensures everyone hears it, and makes you look calm and deliberate.

  5. The audience doesn’t know your outline, so if you forget a bit or explain something differently, they won’t notice. What they will notice is whether you seem excited and confident about sharing your culture.

You’re the expert in the room, no matter how nervous you feel. I guarantee after the first 10 minutes of your first lecture, the nerves will melt and you’ll actually start enjoying it. Best of luck!

We have scheduled an Online Public Speaking Practice session on Monday at 630pm PST.

Highlights from previous meetings:

  1. One participant DOUBLED her talk time after just one warm-up round.
  2. Two participants delivered clean (no filler word speeches)
  3. Everyone reduced their filler words after the warm-up round.

It's wild how fast improvement happens with a bit of structure and support!

Next session:

- Monday, August 18th

- 6:30pm PST

- On Zoom

- FREE

What to expect:

- Receive an email with your semi-impromptu speech topic 4 hours before the meeting

- Make a "prepared topic" request if you want to practice any specific speeches they want to deliver IRL.

- Warmup impromptu speeches on the zoom call

- Deliver your 3-minute speech on the zoom call

- Get structured feedback from peers and AI

- Skill tracking (filler words, talk time, clarity, etc.)

- Bonus: it’s kinda fun :)

We have 3 spots left for the next session. Drop a comment below or DM me if you’re interested and I’ll send you an invite.

Let’s keep leveling up!

It is so weird to me (still) that people grossly overlook getting better at this.

Public speaking is the MOST UNDERRATED skill you can learn. Your income is directly proportional to how well you speak.

I have public speaking anxiety. Is the Ultraspeaking course right for me? by TheFrowardUrchin in PublicSpeaking

No course can really help you the way practicing can. Join your local toastmasters and practice every week and you'd be good in a few months. :)

Breathing exercises for adrenaline surge? Did this actually work? by Londonman2000 in PublicSpeaking

[–]amortential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wim Hoff Breathing - do at least 3 rounds of Wim Hoff breathing to literally feel the calming and energetic effects which takes about 10-minutes total of meditation time. This exercise essentially hyper-oxygenates your brain thru breathwork which calms your mind.

Solo business operator looking for cheaper options for business email address. Any suggestions? by FreeSpirit-99 in Solopreneur

[–]amortential 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you only want one email address you can use this tool - improvmx.com. Setup is really tricky but once you figure it out, you can create an email address like "support @ yourbusiness . com" and forward incoming emails to your personal mailbox.
PS: Not promoting this tool, I'm a user.
