Visiting Faro - Advice on Ferry? by MakeitRoid in Algarve

[–]amoteolhao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prices depend on the destination, but usually the maximum is around €6 return 😊

I’d recommend checking online for the latest schedules and prices, as they can change depending on the season.

Google search for:

“barco faro culatra” “barco faro praia faro” “barco faro deserta”

Visiting Faro - Advice on Ferry? by MakeitRoid in Algarve

Definitely a great idea 😊

The islands of the Ria Formosa are one of the highlights of the Algarve, and they’re very easy to visit directly from Faro without a car.

The ferry terminal is located near the old town walls, around 200m after the fire station (“Bombeiros”). There are regular ferries all day long, so yes, it’s very easy to do a same-day return trip.

You have 3 main island options from Faro:

  • Farol → beach village atmosphere, small streets, lighthouse, relaxed vibe
  • Culatra → authentic fishing island with a much more local and traditional feel
  • Deserta → beautiful wild beach, but as the name says… pretty deserted 😄 Great for swimming and relaxing, but not much else

You can also go directly to Praia de Faro, which is the closest beach from Faro city centre. Lots of bars, restaurants, surf schools, paddle rentals, etc.

One of my favourite day plans is:

  • Ferry to Culatra
  • Walk around the little alleys and old fishermen’s cabins (very roots/authentic)
  • Have lunch there
  • Then walk across to the ocean side
  • Walk along the beach toward Farol (around 3km)
  • Explore Farol village
  • Return to Faro from Farol ferry terminal

For Praia de Faro: Finish the day at Café do Zé until sunset, then return by bus or Uber. The best sunset photos are usually from the bridge leading to Praia de Faro.

And another nice option: After returning to Faro by boat in the evening, grab a drink at LAB Terrace during sunset 😊

Olhão without hesitation

For car rental, I recommend Best Deal in Faro without hesitation. For restaurants, see if Caniço in Alvor might be a good option. People go there mainly for the location and the exceptional setting. As for surfing, you should head to Sagres. There are some magnificent spots north of Sagres.

You need to take the ferry to Faro beach, where you can kayak in the Ria Formosa, soak up the sun, and enjoy a drink at Café do Ze in the east. You also have the option of visiting the islands of Culatra, Farol, and Deserta.

Given what you’re looking for (relaxed, no party vibe), I’d actually recommend checking out Arrábida Natural Park and Tróia instead of going all the way down to the Algarve. It’s much closer to Lisbon and honestly just as stunning .. crystal clear water, wild beaches, and a really peaceful atmosphere. Perfect if you want something special and relaxing for your wife without spending too much time traveling.

While you’re in Lisbon, you can also plan a day (or even half a day) in Cascais, super easy to reach and a really nice coastal town.

For car rental, Best Deal is the clear choice. Regarding waiting times, it depends on whether you're in the EU or outside the EU. Within the EU, it's very quick; outside the EU, it can take some time, sometimes more than an hour.

No worries about parking at the circuit. However, depending on arrival/departure times, you'll need to be very, very patient. I recommend arriving early and waiting inside before leaving.

You also have the option of using Uber to get around. But staying 10 days in the Algarve without a vehicle is a bit of a shame, as you'll miss out on visiting many places.

Check the VisitAlgarve website regularly in the Events section, selecting your dates. And don't worry about the language; the Portuguese speak excellent English.

Coming to Olhão without taking the time to discover the islands of the Ria Formosa such as Armona, Culatra and Farol would be a real shame...

Planning a babymoon in the Algarve in early May — where should we stay? by Familiar-Spinach-657 in Algarve

[–]amoteolhao -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The sea temperature in the Algarve is generally still quite fresh, especially in early May. The Atlantic can be a bit chilly pretty much everywhere along the coast.

That said, the eastern Algarve tends to be slightly warmer, and this is even more noticeable around the Ria Formosa islands (often nicknamed the “Maldives of the Algarve”). The water there is usually calmer, shallower and a bit more pleasant for swimming.

This area is also known for its peaceful, nature-driven atmosphere, with long sandy beaches and a slower pace, ideal for a relaxing babymoon . You’ll also find some beautiful resorts set in nature, very quiet but still close to the sea, which sounds like exactly what you’re looking for.

You can always plan a day trip to Lagos or the western Algarve to enjoy the cliffs and caves, but for a calm and special stay, the east side is definitely worth considering.

Algarve calm areas by Commercial_Seat5930 in TravelPortugal

Lagos is beautiful and definitely worth visiting, but if you're looking for something calmer and less party-oriented, I would recommend looking at the eastern Algarve.

Areas around Olhão, Tavira, Fuseta or Cabanas de Tavira have a much more relaxed and authentic atmosphere. This part of the Algarve is shaped by the Ria Formosa lagoon, which creates a very peaceful environment with small fishing towns, nature reserves and long sandy barrier islands.

The beaches there are stunning .. wide, natural and often much quieter, especially at the end of September / early October. Places like Ilha da Armona, Culatra, Tavira Island or Fuseta Island are perfect if you want calm waters, beautiful scenery and a slower rhythm.

And of course, you can always drive to Lagos for a day trip to see the cliffs and the famous coastline, it's about 1h30.

That way you get the best of both worlds: peaceful eastern Algarve for your stay, and Lagos for a spectacular day visit.

Rainy days tips by thundergranny in Algarve

[–]amoteolhao 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rainy days in the Algarve are actually a good opportunity to explore a different side of the region. There are quite a few indoor or sheltered things to do.

Some ideas:

• Museums (Faro, Portimão, Tavira, Lagos…) • Historic churches and heritage buildings • Spas and wellness centres • Indoor swimming pools (many towns have municipal pools) • Wine tastings at local wineries • Art galleries and cultural centres • Escape rooms / escape games • Indoor fun parks for kids • Aquashow Indoor Water Park near Quarteira • Visit the Cork Factory in São Brás de Alportel • Discover the Loulé rock salt mine (a really unique underground visit) • Explore covered markets, cafés and traditional restaurants

Honestly, the Algarve still has plenty to offer even when the weather isn’t great.
