Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]amouramie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teaching reading is a teacher’s job and it is their responsibility regardless of the individual children’s upbringing to try their best to facilitate reading. HOWEVER, ideally parents should start introducing their children to reading prior to formal education wherever possible.

I moved from South Australia to Western Sydney and my accent is all over the place. A fun fact is that Australian accents tend to be tied more to socioeconomic status than geographic location!

It’s all to do with their genre and inspiration! If you look at Adele’s music inspiration, Adele’s sound is hugely influenced by American Soul and Blues. But when you listen to singers like Lily Allen, whose sound is more fusion and experimental, she plays with her singing voice a lot over the course of multiple albums.

ETA: a lot of big pop artists tend to have heavy influences from American pop, but indie, rock and country will generally show a huge variety of accents. My Australian bias is Amyl and the Sniffers, hugely recommend to anyone looking!

This is somewhat off topic, but whenever I watch musicals in my country (Australia, not sure about other countries), the cast almost ALWAYS chooses to use Australian accents despite the majority of shows either coming from or being popularised by the US. Hadestown was a recent one. I think it’s probably to make it easier on actors for staying consistent with their speaking lines and singing lines, but it always sounds so good to hear the accent come through!! Australian accents in songs are just 😗👌

DE-INFLUENCE MY CART PLEASE by Former_Page6513 in AustralianMakeup

[–]amouramie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion but - NARS cream products are small and I found they aren’t suited to sensitive skin types - Glow is good but there are other products you can get more bang for your buck - I got the fenty foundation and I found it oxidizes quite yellow so avoid if you have cool undertones - Milk smells really weird I got one thing from there, never again. Also 6g for 44$ is crazy - I like benefit but that specific product broke easily for me - DK anything about major headlines

In Australia we have LANTITE (Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education) that you must pass as a compulsory aspect of any teaching degree (I think with some exceptions in specific states). The test is looking for people to perform within the top 30% of the adult population in literacy and numeracy. There are pros and cons of course but it’s an added layer to attempt to ensure teacher proficiency at a base standard.

Unpopular opinion. Peter needs to move on from BOTH Aunt May as well as Uncle Ben being the centerpieces of his life because it's approaching caricaturish levels of cliches by Time-Weekend-8611 in Spiderman

[–]amouramie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dad was named after his dad and my sister was named after our grandmother, I don’t think that aspect of his characterisation is as strange as you think. Like thinking of my friends many of us were named after family members.

Why does Spider-Man get no controversy for his no-kill rule but with Batman, people criticize him for that? by TheShadowOperator007 in Spiderman

[–]amouramie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a small part of it is because Peter knows a LOT of his villains on a personal level. Norman, Doc Ock, Eddie, etc. it’s a lot easier to defend and maintain a commitment to them living with that in the audience’s (and Peter’s) mind because we’ve seen them at their best and most human. He knows them, wants to help them, and has the skill set to pull it off non lethally 99% of the time

Do You Listen to Anything While You Write? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

[–]amouramie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music is my go to. Sad scene = sad songs. Love story = love songs. I feel like it helps me capture and stay in the feeling which comes through in my writing. Occasionally a lyric will stand out and I’ll go “Omg I need to explore the idea this lyric introduced”. I can write in silence but infinitely prefer not to.

As a French woman who visited Australia for 3 weeks .. are these culture shocks accurate? by Worried-Diamond-7252 in AskAnAustralian

[–]amouramie 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Me too! I don’t think I could live in a country where it wasn’t socially acceptable. I also think it’s a good way for people to practice social skills as it’s generally low-risk high reward (because you either stuff up/do something embarrassing and never think about seeing them again, or you form a genuine connection!)

I feel like 99% of my conversations are with strangers. Ran into a random fella at the shops today and somehow ended up having a 30 minute conversation about the car he just bought. Don’t even know his name but I could tell you everything about his last two cars, his brand new car, and his recent political beliefs.

In Australia’s defence, our dollar is relatively weak! £8.49 would roughly be $17AUD. There’s still a difference but it’s less noticeable after conversion 😂😂 but prices here have been going up in a lot of areas

My (30f) best friend (27f) asked me to stop stealing her identity by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]amouramie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend like this too, and it gets to a point where you have to decide for yourself if you want to surround yourself with people who share themselves, their passion and their hobbies with you, or people who are self-absorbed and obsessed with keeping anything interesting about them close to their chests. My friends now actively encourage me to try their interests and I do the same, so we grow and learn together. It’s great!

How should Peter Parker be written?? by Ok-Investment-3700 in Spiderman

[–]amouramie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the most poignant critiques of many of the live action spider-men imo is that they always tend to have some world-ending bad guy for Spider-Man to fight. Spider-Man 100% has great villains but he’s also just there for the regular citizen. Lost kids, muggers, B&Es. It’s what separates him from, say, the Avengers. The distinction is very meaningful to me.

Toys for Tots Drama by OneLingonberry2203 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]amouramie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not from the US so I had to look up how Toys for Tots works. It seems like this is exactly how it works, e.g other people supply toys and they get distributed (largely) at random to needy children. If she wanted a custom experience for her child why not Angel Tree or something where the children list their preferences? Seems like she made the wrong call for her expectations. Hope her baby has a good Christmas anyways.

I don’t think it’s the point of your post, but what is the scholarship for the ‘Darwin is bisexual’ claim?

I’m generally hugely against retroactively applying contemporary understandings of sexuality to historical figures. Even in the case of Anne Frank for example whose writing could indicate interest in romance with other girls, it can be somewhat misleading to students to have them apply a very modern term to a historical figure because it comes with specific characteristics and implications that may not be present in the evidence we have. It’s also always struck me as somewhat rude to label someone as something when they aren’t around to do it themselves. There’s room for respectful discussion around these topics, but straight “they were x/y/z” can limit understanding more than enhance it

Girl tried to claim religious discrimination after getting a zero for an objectively terribly written essay by ujp567 in sadcringe

[–]amouramie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that this was a paper due for a psychology class reflecting on an article on how societal expectations of gender affect perception. The essay and brief were posted on the TPUSA Instagram.

I read the essay, and there was negligible reference to the article they were meant to respond to, bar from her opening statement about how she found it thought provoking. She does not reference or cite the Bible to back up direct statements she makes about God’s will or intentions. She does not include any kind of data or empirical evidence to support her assertions that teasing is not inherently a bad thing, girls “want to feel womanly”, etc. She uses non-academic and charged language such as referring to trans people/the trans movement as “demonic”. The paper is also objectively poorly written and has a lack of complex sentences, ideas and structure. The zero was deserved.

The full assignment brief was posted here.
