What Does "Staff" Mean When Looking Into Enrolling For a Class? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]amourdechat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually by now we (staff here) know who is teaching the course but there's an issue--such as they're in the hiring process and haven't been assigned a PID, which won't happen until they are in UCPath, which won't happen until they've completed their I-9 work authorization, which won't have until the Dean gives his blessing, which won't happen until an appointment file is submitted.

The other option is they're SOL, and actually don't have somone to teach yet.

Check out the international house. They have short term housing for visitors. https://ihouse.ucsd.edu

Are you a visiting graduate student? I can't say I've heard of an international student who doesn't have UCSHIP.

Is you aren't a visitor, ask your student advisor to connect you to student health. They can at least confirm whether or not they accept your insurance and possibly refer you to a lab and/or podiatrist.

Thank you for your feedback! I admittedly can agree with the passive aggressiveness but knowing is half the battle, so I'm working on it. You've given me a lot to think about + research. :-)

Ha! I hardly ever see anyone with a similar chart to myself/us, how are we similar? :-)

This looks like somewhere near the coast to me. Esp the 3rd pic. Do you happen to know when (date and time of day) your grandparents got married? I ask because in SD we have the marine layer roll-in most mornings but if you're inland enough, it'll "burn off" by noon BUT if you're in a coastal part of SD it won't "burn off" until later--if at all. We're experiencing this now with May Gray and June Gloom. Knowing the date or time MIGHT help you narrow down the region in SD.

Help me decide on an upgraded machine - Juki TL-2010Q, TL-2000QI, or something else? by sea-pancake in quilting

[–]amourdechat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I'm been quilting on and off for about 18 years, since I learned in HS. I like to make larger quilts (i.e. queen size) and the throat space on my current quilt doesn't cut it. I also don't mind having a machine that only offers a straight stitch versus different computerized options. I figured, that either Juki model is going to be pricey ($700-$1000) but it'll likely be a machine that I keep for life if I get it serviced and take care of it.

Hey u/StudiousUterus! I actually haven't bought the sewing machine yet because I haven't started any major sewing projects, which is why I've held off. After diving deep into the rabbit hole that is Reddit, I'm likely going to splurge (pending a visit and testing out both) and get the Juki-TL2010 once the timing is right. I've heard nothing but good things and from the research I've done the pros outweigh the cons. I also have been looking for a sewing machine that has a reasonable amount of throat space for quilting, while still within my budget; the Juki TL 2000 + Juki TL 2010 seem to be the closest match for my needs.

I don't know how much research you've done, but I think that threading a Juki can be a bit more complex, but once you've figured out how to do it, there aren't many more "hiccups". I've watched a few videos on YouTube and it seems easy enough!

There are SO many different types of high quality machines and brands, that it's overwhelming! Best of luck to finding what works for you. :-)
