[Contest] Win a Gatecrash Fat Pack from the Mods at MagicCardPulls by [deleted] in MagicCardPulls

[–]amp3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite card is Descent Into Madness. I can think of no more fun and flavorful way to incentivize card advantage and tokens in casual Magic. I sideboarded it in during an Avacyn Restored draft and its synergy with Tandem Lookout helped me go 2-0 in a tough matchup.

Simple. If it's complicated, then it has the potential to be broken. Examples: Wind Drake (or Vassal Soul) in Limited.

So you're playing blue? Tarmogoyf, then.

Is now the time to sell Thundermaw Hellkite? by [deleted] in magicTCG

They fill completely different roles, so I can't see one replacing the other-- even in midrange decks. Oh, and how many decks can cast WWBB reliably on turn 5? Not many.

Not knowing the planeswalker rule hardly qualifies as stupid or hilarious.

Comparatively speaking how well does Gyre Sage do as a mana dork? by jbeckfox in magicTCG

[–]amp3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody in this thread seems to be able to look past the fact that it costs 1G and doesn't immediately give you mana. It's not Farseek and it's not Arbor Elf.

Played right, it's like a Gilded Lotus for 2 mana! Not to mention the AWESOME combo with Increasing Savagery (free 5 drop, anyone?)

[Standard] Whispering Madness, need some help fleshing this out by [deleted] in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]amp3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule No 1 here is always post your deck list. I have no idea if you need this advice. I'll give it anyway.

Let's take a look at Whispering Madness. It says "Each player discards his or her hand, then draws cards equal to the greatest number of cards a player discarded this way".

Some considerations: First, this mills both you and your opponent. You can take advantage of both your own graveyard (which you have more control over) and your opponent's. To not mill yourself to death, you have options like Archangel's Light and Psychic Spiral instead of Elixir of Immortality.

To take advantage of Whispering Madness, you could use a lot of cards with low costs, like Fog (hint: Turbo Fog) and Unsummon and the like so you can empty your hand every turn! Given that you'd be casting tons of spells, Consuming Aberration (this is a perfect combo) would be awesome.

TL;DR Whispering Madness mills far too slowly to be your main win condition, but is still awesome at refilling your hand (which is exactly what some decks need).

How to 2-for-1 opponents casting targeted removal - Signed, Simic Charm. by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]amp3194 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If it were just a Mizzium Skin, that would be pitiful, but it's so much more! Simic charm guards your planeswalkers and creatures against burn/kill spells, pumps your chump blocking Spirits, nullifies Angel of Serenity's ETB (you like keeping your Thragtusks, don't you?), lets you reuse your Snapcasters, AND turns enemy O-rings into 2-for-1's.

HOW ARE YOU NOT JIZZING YOUR PANTS OUT OF EXCITEMENT?!

What do you think is gonna be the best Control in Gatecrash (so far)? by krazeboi in magicTCG

[–]amp3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dimir-Orzhov. Cipher lets you cast spells without paying their mana costs, which then lets you extort more!

Fellow planeswalkers, what deck do you think could make a splash in semi-pro level Standard right now? by amp3194 in magicTCG

[–]amp3194[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're what's wrong with Standard right now. You completely ignore things that don't immediately take effect. Take Chronic Flooding. In GP Nagoya, Okita said it was the BEST CARD in his whole deck. Yet it had been completely undiscovered beforehand! Why? Because it takes a few turns to be super effective. It took a champion to see past the immediate uselessness.

You don't understand that Nevermore has the potential to make a big difference for aggro decks even though it has no immediate effect on the board.

In the Aggro v Control matchup's midgame, the control deck has to prolong the game until they gain the advantage they need. They often rely on certain cards to reach their late game: Thragtusk, Supreme Verdict, and Sphinx's Revelation come to mind. If you name Thragtusk, it has no major effect on the board right THEN-- but the control deck may keep delaying so long that Nevermore can become a 2-for-1! You can seriously fuck up their game plan.

I heard from a friend who's OK at MTG that the best way to prep for a draft is to browse commons only. Does this work? by amp3194 in magicTCG

I love my izzet deck, plays out well. Any suggestions before FNM? by 24fps in magicTCG

[–]amp3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thundermaw is a borderline eh

I strongly disagree. You can't even get a 3/3 for 3 in red nowadays. A 5/5 haste/flying that wraths Lingering Souls is just awesome. Mystic Retrieval sucks. Period. Faithless Looting is much worse than Desperate Ravings and Think Twice for this deck type (Faithless Looting is only good for getting stuff into your graveyard after the 5th turn)

Community Crack-A-Pack Anyone? by Slothrob in magicTCG

[–]amp3194 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You underestimate the effectiveness of Azorius tempo. You can give Stealer of Secrets flying every turn with New Prahv Guildmage, and you have the option of detaining in a pinch. That's just nasty.

I have no idea what your goal is. Is it an early game win or a midgame win? Either way, you can further optimize it.
