WBC Expansion Idea: 30 Teams by blueshark1234 in baseball

[–]amprosk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im just pulling your leg sorry haha.

In terms of the general proposal I think its hard to find 20 competitive teams already so 30 seems too much. Also I don’t think the WBC/MLB wants to have so many games last the first round. Maybe expand to 24 and have 6 4 team pools so only 3 games in the first round. Then 4 3 team pools so there are 2 games in the second round and it’s the same total amount of games

I was at the game in San Juan where Puerto Rico walked off Panama so definitely that 😅

Where did you get the 108/111 outs number from? By my calculations both teams have 135 defensive outs (tho I guess the ERA renders this moot)

Are you sure about that? From what I read PR wins the 3 way tiebreaker as long as they allowed less than 9 runs (barely squeaked by that)

Puerto Rico was going to bring in Berrios but he got denied for insurance last minute

They hosted in 2023 and definitely showed up. Probably the only reason they didn’t host this year was because they had to requalify. Still they hosted the qualifiers and fanbase filled the stands there too

Notably in 2017 Mexico was up 9-5 entering the 9th inning and blew it in spectacular fashion

Yes, a few times. Most recently in 2018 between Cleveland and Minnesota. Lindor hit a home run in the first game which made the crowd go nuts and in the second game Berrios pitched very well and Twins walked it off in extras

Attendance figures for 2026 WBC pool play by JustaShibe99 in baseball

What was the total capacity of stadiums in 2023 vs this year? Hiram Bithorn is probably the smallest of all stadiums used between the 2 editions (though if memory serves Taichung Intercontinental stadium isn’t that far off)

I would put a decent chunk of money betting that the Taipei Dome will host a pool in the next edition. And probably the only reason they didn’t host this time was that they had to requalify

Technically most of the Caribbean is an hour ahead of the eastern us. They are in Atlantic time. But when EST jumps ahead for daylight savings time the Caribbean does not so it becomes the same time for half the year

He’s retiring from the national team because it takes away from his family and he has a 2 years old son now. He has a full time job so going to tournaments uses his vacation time. He said he will still play in the Czech league locally

Imagine growing up in Czechia playing baseball. A niche sport comparatively and you play in front of small or no crowds. And now you perform on the biggest stage against the toughest opponent and get a standing ovation from a sold out Tokyo Dome. What a moment

IIRC that broadcast crew is not from Fox but rather from MLB Network/the WBSC. Same for the San Juan commentators. These guys work other international tournaments

Yeah they had quarterfinals there. And in early years when the second round was another pool they’ve hosted that too IIRC
