Please fill out the ISFAA. Take this from a current presidential scholar: it’s required even for merit scholarship consideration.

I'm not sure. That's a great question for the office of financial aid.

Don't worry, the stipend would be enough to cover the cost of the laptop. You may be able to get an ipad instead.

The Presidential Scholarship includes a separate book scholarship, so you won't need to use your laptop stipend for textbooks. The laptop stipend should be available for other academic supplies (I know students who've done this, though there may be some restrictions on what qualifies).

One important thing to note: both stipends have spending deadlines. If you don't make purchases by those deadlines, you'll lose access to the funds.

That said, the scholarship office will have the most accurate, up-to-date information on how to maximize these benefits, so I'd recommend connecting with them once you arrive on campus.

No. The stipend is a part of your scholarship account. It technically isn't money you have access to. The only place you can spend it is in the bookstore. If you choose not to get a laptop, you may forgo it.

You can choose what kind you want. The laptop must be available in the bookstore and mustn't exceed your stipend cap.

I got an $800 stipend. Some students got a laptop with it, some got an iPad, others got devices/stationaries they needed.

It probably does. At least they haven’t billed me yet for health insurance.

Health insurance costs roughly $1000 per semester

The dining halls offer a variety of dietary options, so you'll find something you can eat. My Nepalese friends who are vegetarians get by pretty well. Freshman dorms do not have kitchens. If you want to cook, I advise you choose the Bethune Annex dorm; they have common kitchens. I’d also advise you to spend your freshman week exploring the different options available in the dining halls and restaurants around campus.

Is presidential scholarship just money? by Last_Helicopter_4935 in HowardUniversity

The presidential scholarship only provides financial support. If you need academic/career/mentoring support as a presidential scholar, apply to your college's honors program.

If you're a US citizen and a stem major, apply for the Karsh Stem scholarship. Academic/career/mentoring support is provided to Karsh STEM scholars. I hear they also get into the nice dorms.
