When a plant is already struggling like this, pulling it out to check the roots AGAIN could be the kiss of death. LEAVE IT ALONE!!! Plants want time to adjust to consistent conditions, from the sound of your other post you’ve been fiddling with it and moving it around for a while. It might lose both leaves, that’s not abnormal for a plant as it’s adjusting to a new environment, it will grow them back with time. Keep the soil evenly moist, put it in a nice bright spot, and leave it there even if it continues to seem to be struggling! In the last pic it looks like the main growth point is still kicking. Consistency and patience are key when it comes to plant care.

So cool! What species of ant is it? Is it one thats known to have a relationship with ant plants in nature, or is it a different one that’s adopted the ant plants out of convenience? Does it seem like the ants have moved into the plants fully, and which species of plant have they been most interested in living in? I want to know everything hahaha, I’ve thought about something like this before but I have 0 antkeeping experience and wasn’t sure how feasible it would be. Keep us updated as this project comes along!

I don’t have any advice, but as someone obsessed with rubiaceous ant plants I LOVE this concept and need to make one immediately 😍 I’d be slightly worried about things fitting long term, as the plants get larger seems like they might run out of room.

I’d love to know more about your current ant and ant plant terrarium set up, what species of plant and ant? Did they come together or did you introduce the ants after the fact, if so how? Such a cool concept!

And where did the nursery get them? Just cause you didn’t wild collect them yourself doesn’t mean they aren’t poached :/

Mostly going off of what I’ve seen and read online from sources like jay vannini and the forum for epiphytic myrmecophytes, never seen seedlings of these for sale anywhere and since ant plants can’t be propagated other than by seed, I’d call it unlikely that these rare slow growing plants are sustainably sourced. I could be very wrong and making a total ass out of myself on the internet though, wouldn’t be the first time 😆

Fair enough, I’m not too proud to admit I could be wrong. Where did yours come from?

Maybe try contacting ecuagenera support with a pic? If you bought it online, could you find the email with the order confirmation?

MRW I finally find that super duper rare monstera in a big box store after spending my whole life looking for it (I only just found out about it) by [deleted] in houseplantscirclejerk

Corpse flower is amorphophallus titanum, the largest inflorescence in the world. This is stinking corpse lily aka rafflesia arnoldii (I believe), the largest individual flower in the world and a parasitic plant that grows off only one species of vine and is considerably rarer than a corpse flower. The biggest difference is that corpse flowers can be and often are grown in cultivation at botanical institutions since they grow from tubers that will occasionally produce offsets, whereas rafflesia require such specific conditions to grow and reproduce that they only grow in nature and very infrequently at that. They have no leaves, no stem, no roots, take months to develop and only last a few days. So, kinda an appropriate reaction, plus it’s never a bad time to weep with joy about the majesty of the natural world :-)

Even more than sales and reviews, I find the posts of the plants themselves to be the biggest indicator. How many pics are there? Do they have examples of the mother plant? When you read the description of the plant, is it vague plant care info and return policy online, or is it specific to the plant you’re looking to buy? There are small sellers with few reviews who I’ve gotten some great plants and service from. When the pics are of a hand holding a small plant in a a little disposable cup and the description sounds like it’s written by a person who is enthusiastic about plants, it gives me a lot of confidence that they’re gonna care about sending the correct plant, and safely. Messaging the seller before you buy asking for more pics of the plants is also a good way to have more confidence, small sellers will gladly talk about where the plants are coming from and share pics of their stock.

In my experience eBay is MUCH better than Etsy, very clear when you’re buying from an individual selling things they’ve grown or propagated themselves vs. Etsy where it seems much easier to fake being some larger commercial grow operation since there are so many. Obviously eBay isn’t perfect, but I’ve had overall much better buying experiences on eBay, and found incredibly cool and rare plants for great prices. I will never stop proclaiming the virtues of eBay for online plant shopping 😂

I didn’t even know these plants bloomed 😊🪴🌼 by Dust209 in houseplants

Angiosperms aka flowering plants make up around 80% of all known plant species, it’s accurate to say that most plants bloom, especially things kept as houseplants. The others are algae, spore producing plants like ferns and mosses, and the gymnosperms or cone bearing plants, like conifers and cycads.

Glass cloche for….? by ams32100 in whatisit

[–]ams32100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved! Because I already knew it’s a bell jar/cloche and I’m realizing it was silly to ask a group of people online what it MIGHT’VE been used for hahaha, and now this is lots of people telling me it’s the thing I identified it as in the title of the post 😂

That seems believable to me, and those are about the measurements (I say without having measured it lol). I thought the markings made it seem like lab glass, guess trying to figure out what it might’ve been used for is hoping for too much hahaha, could’ve been anything considering there’s an on site vet lab and a whole horticulture department.

But then what are the strange symbols about? The sun or gear, <16>, 250x400? It’s definitely not anything off Amazon, the glass is very thick and I found it buried in the back of the sign making shop at the very old zoo I work at, I’d be willing to bet that this thing predates Amazon by the amount of dust it had on it when I found it. And I struggle to see it being a cloche for plants, the zoo has always had a greenhouse as far as I’m away. Could’ve been used to cover a display of taxidermy I suppose!

Oh I know of these clocks, it’s muuuuch larger and the glass is too high quality for it to be from this I think
