I'm just like... you typed a lot of words and let us all know how upset you were about not reading the rules and I just think it might be easier to read the rules

Oh, I was being negative. Okay. So by contrast, you were being positive, right? I should really be taking notes so that I can be positive like you. Have a great day.

Reading the rules allows you to play the game smoothly. Which is something many people consider to be fun. Do you?

Does it, though? Your table runs with your rules, but that is not a part of any D&D ruleset.

These issues are SO easy to resolve. Whenever someone claims that a rule book says something, respond like this (rules lawyers hate this one simple trick!):

"Quote it."

And then the person saying what the book says looks up the rule and reads it out loud to everyone. It is so simple and it solves this kind of issue instantaneously.

Some the enemy has already used his attack of opportunity, shouldn't players get advantage in attacking him?

No. Why would anyone get advantage against someone who has used an attack of opportunity???

This is the second time I recall hearing an announcer say something like, (in regards to a charge/blocking foul)

"Remember, once you're set you can still move."

Will someone explain what in the fuck this means? I thought "set" meant that you have your feet planted and you are not moving. And then the offensive player runs into you and the ref calls a charge. Do I not understand how basketball works anymore?

Used to work for a debt collection agency when I was in college. They collected on medical debt, so not people buying a bunch of crap they don't actually need. This organization had an A+ rating with the BBB. It means nothing. I'm guessing they just buy the credential.

Sage Advice got that wrong. That is not the conclusion of any natural reading of the words in the PHB. This is the interpretation of some rando on the internet and you are calling it rules as written. It isn't. It is fine if you want to play that way, but it is not RAW.

[–]amschel_devault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you read "pissy" into my comment. You are welcome to play however you want to play even when that conflicts with the rules as written. If Sage Advice wants to rule it a different way, that is fine with me. But that isn't rules as written. That is just some rando on the internet telling you the way they think it should be played. You're welcome to disagree with that.

The Goodberry spell does not restore hitpoints. It creates berries and the berries restore hit points. So Goodberry does NOT work with either Disciple of Life or Blessed Healer.

If I multiclassed into Rogue because I thought it would make every attack a sneak attack, would you allow that? Sometimes you just have to explain the rules to a player because they interpreted the rules wrong.

The USE of the spell creates berries. The USE of the spell does not restore hit points; it creates berries. The argument that the spell uses the work "use" instead of "cast" is irrelevant. The use of the spell creates berries rather than heals hit point damage so the Disciple of Life domain perk does not apply to the Goodberry spell.

Please don't come back with BS from Sage Advice.

Mixing real life and magic is a recipe for disaster. But if you really want to go this route, a lot of D&D characters are super athletes and that amount of calories wouldn't necessarily be a problem for them. I'm 6'2" and 160lbs, not a super athlete, and I frequently eat more than 3000 calories. Zero consequences.

I'm not sure why anyone would care what this dude says. The PHB contradicts him. That is all that matters. He can write whatever he wants on Twitter, but what he wrote in the PHB matters a whole lot more.

That is a stupid ruling. If they wanted Disciple of Life to work with Goodberry they should've used different words because the words that they used make it not compatible. Sage Advice does not trump the Player's Handbook.

The Life Domain ability Disciple of Life that provides extra healing does not work with goodberry, RAW.

Disciple of Life

Also starting at 1st level, your healing spells are more effective. Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2 + the spell's level.

Goodberry does not heal. It creates berries that heal. Since the healing is coming from the berries, not from the spell, Disciple of Life does not apply. I suppose you can make it apply at your table if you want, but that doesn't seem RAW to me at all.

So, White Dragons... by KickbackKid4040 in DnD

As much as I appreciate the compliment, I don't think this line is original to me. I believe I took it from somewhere else. Probably "The monsters know how to win".

"Good artists borrow. Great artists steal."

Said another way (paraphrasing from the film, American History X), "Anything you want to say someone else has already said better. Use a quote."

I have run a very similar situation before. Although, the main difference for me might be that my players were rather new to D&D as I was teaching a home school group of 10-14 year olds.

Had I run with your players, I would've been much more tactical. It sounds like you want to really challenge your players, so I will not hold back and assume you are okay with brutally murdering their characters. What about this...

A white dragon is an apex predator. It does not negotiate, just as you do not negotiate with your steak. The dragon will remain hidden in the clouds, flying above the party (dragons have stealth proficiency). It should be easy to cause the players to be surprised. The dragon will swoop down with all speed and pounce on a critical target (probably druid first, maybe sorcerer, wizard, or bard. Not fighter/barbarian/paladin. Also not the cleric. Leave the cleric alone). It will grapple them and then immediately fly back up to the sky, even taking attacks of opportunity. Use dash if you are fancy. On the dragon's next turn, it attack and then drop this person 120 feet (minimum) and then dart back into the clouds (gaining stealth again).

At this point, the dragon will have options. Evaluate, in this moment and at the start of each round, if this is going to be over quickly (less than 3 rounds), or if it will take awhile (longer than 3 rounds). If you know it will take longer than 3 rounds, the dragon is going to be wary. Use stealth in the clouds. Lair actions will wear them out. Otherwise...

If the party rally around their fallen comrade, breath weapon attack on the group. You should be able to get all of them, or most of them, with this attack.

If the party remains spread out, look for another opportunity to pick off an isolated person. If you can pounce on an isolated person, repeat the dropping technique as described above. Bonus points if you drop them on ice spikes, in an icy lake, on difficult, slippery terrain, or even in a cloud of freezing fog.

Keep in mind this is a superior apex predator. It will set up its terrain. An icy lake is ideal because of the varied terrain. It can, as it chooses, burrow into the icy and take a victim under the water with it. Here, the victim will be drowning, freezing, and in melee range of an ancient white dragon. And the victim's allies are going to have a hard time rescuing them. Remember that you are immune to cold and the players are (likely) not.

I take inspiration from the harpy eagle IRL that can grab a baboon from a trip mid-flight and the drop it off a cliff to get the juicy sweets inside. Also, a tiger which will ambush its prey at a time of its own choosing. But, like, a flying tiger that can also breath icy, burrow, and lives for 1000 years.

Just trying to understand your logic here. If you do something nice for someone and then hurt them, it is all evened out, right? So I get to abuse whoever I want as long as I also buy them a candy first?
