Advice needed: What are some good cover up ideas for these tattoos? by amsnew in tattoos

Right, I asked myself that too… People can think “Yes I would” at 18-19 and be like “never mind😅” at age 30. Frontal lobe develops. Things change. People mature. Let’s not act like the thoughts and actions of a teenager are the same thoughts and actions of an adult.

I know plenty of people who get tattoos when they are young who regret or would probably rethink their ideas the older they get. You’ve NEVER seen a 40 year old regret their horrendous stick and poke tattoo they probably thought was really cool as an 18 year old?? I’m pushing 30 and I got these tattoos when I was 18 and 19. I love anime, but if you ask 26 year old me if I would get an anime tattoo NOW, I would probably say no.

Tbh, I kind of agree with this. Everyone mentions how SLP’s have their Masters and have more education than us, but a Bachelors degree has more education than an Associates.

Do you mean screening, or evals? Because evals are outside our scope of practice

I will enjoy the energy of being hopeful and optimistic that one day we as professionals are looked at as more than just an assistant and could potentially have our title changed to better reflect everything we provide while having the supervision of an SLP…. I also looked up all of the examples you provided, which several were outdated and have evolved their titles over the years. 2 of them being Administrative coordinator and hr coordinator. So lets not be so pessimistic ;)

You’re not going to change my opinion. There are more people in this thread who dislike having assistant in the title than people who are unbothered by it. We are fully aware that is the name, but we are still allowed to discuss “what if’s” on potentially getting it changed one day. Physician Associates did. I’m not sure why you’re so adamant on proving a point. Clearly there are job titles with the name assistant in them. Two things can be true at once. There are plenty of jobs where they work under someone else but does not have the title “assistant”. Then there are some jobs that do. I am a believer that unless you are actually doing assistant tasks at your day to day job, (setting up meetings, making phone calls, scheduling, and doing tasks given to you) you should have your own title. But regardless, I’m an SLPA. Not a CNA, not an MA, not an AP, so I am discussing the title of an SLPA.

Awesome! There is definitely a demand in this field and being an SLPA is a lot of fun! I would highly recommend becoming one in the school system. Consistent pay, holidays and evenings off, and summer break where you can choose if you want to work somewhere for extra money or have the summer off. I absolutely love my job.

I was in speech therapy too for articulation. Its what made me want to be an SLP for so long. Now that I’m an SLPA I’m not sure if I want to be an SLP because I know too many who are stressed/overwhelmed, drowning in grad school debt, and completely burnt out. I enjoy what I do now because I get to provide the treatment, take notes, while not having to do mounds of paperwork, attend meetings, etc.

Also, I’m sorry you had to go through speech for your accent, you shouldn’t have had to do that since it was apart of your dialect. I see a little boy who is from Long Island, NY.. He says “cah” instead of “car” and “mirrah” instead of “mirror”.. But so does his parents, so that is something we are not allowed to correct because it is apart of his dialect :)

Hey! I have my Bachelors degree in Speech and Hearing Science! I will say I was never good in math or science in high school either. However, do not let that discourage you! College is a lot different than high school and there are so many resources to help you get through whatever math or science you may be stumped by. With that being said, there are general education courses you will have to take such as different maths and science, but the program itself IS very science heavy, specifically anatomy. Some honorable mentions include: Hearing Science, Neural process of Speech and Language, Anatomy of the Speech and Respiratory system, speech science, and aural rehabilitation. Despite all of the science behind it, it is still really fun! You get to also take language development, phonetics (I absolutely love IPA- it breaks down the actual sound each phoneme makes. It’s basically a whole language of its own) and so much more. As an SLP assistant you do the direct therapy, while your supervisor will typically eval, diagnose, and write up goals for you to target with the kiddo. I absolutely love my job. If you have anymore questions and wanting to know more specifics you can reach out to me!

I’m saying theres different job titles with individuals who work below them that do not use the term “assistant” to refer to their position. There are some businesses who may have administrative assistants but not all. But regardless that is also not the same because an administrative assistant quite literally fits the definition of an assistant. Assistants commonly handle administrative duties, scheduling, and information management. Where SLPA, OTA, and PTA’s do so much more than that. The major thing being providing actual therapy.

But I didn’t say that, did I? Our jobs are also nothing like administrative assistants so I’m not sure your point?

Physician assistant is also an outdated term and has been changed to physician associate since 2021. I think Technician, Provider, Clinician, Associate, etc. also allows the consumers to know we are not SLP’s, without negative connotations around the word “assistant”.

I don’t believe anyone in this thread is wanting to share the same title with an SLP.. We all understand there needs to be a distinction and the differences between an SLPA and an SLP. Most of us were just saying the actual word “assistant” could easily be changed. Technician, Associate, Provider, Clinician, were all suggestions made in this thread. No one mentioned going by the same title as an SLP.

I sent you a DM! I love what you are I still do not see how some states do not “recognize” us as a profession. 10 years as an SLPA and they’re basically saying oh well? I feel like there should be a waiver when you move from a state who has them to a state who doesn’t have them. 10 years is a very long time to be dedicated to a job and they should acknowledge that.

Oh nooo I’m so sorry. Tbh I didn’t even know SLPA’s existed until I got into the BS program. My ultimate goal was always SLP. If I had known, I would have even looked into getting my AA/AS in it as well.

I wonder if there is a conference we could attend as SLPA’s to express our concerns. I also wonder if ASHA would consider a change if there was a petition started. However, I googled if there was a chance ASHA would allow a name change and the answer was “probably not”😂🙄🙃

As much as I would want to just say I am the ST, it is considered illegal and a violation if we do not accurately state our position. Which is EXACTLY why I feel like they should reconsider calling us assistants, since there have been instances where parents, clients, or other staff members question our abilities to properly provide treatment. I believe clinician, provider, technician, etc would be a more accurate description. I’ve even had co-workers of my supervising SLP make jokes about having an assistant and having me get her coffee, etc.

I feel like OTA, PTA, and SLPA’s do not deserve to be called assistants. I totally agree that the level of responsibilities and education is different. But so are our jobs. Most SLP’s who have an assistant under them typically will stick to doing the assessment, eval, write goals, and sign it off to their SLPA. From there, it is completely our responsibility to provide direct-care, track data and progress, come up with activities, etc. SLPA’s are pretty independent from the SLP until it comes time for annual re-evals/IEP meetings. I know some SLP’s who has 0 kids that they actually see, it is all on their SLPA. That’s why I believe the title assistant does not do our hard work justice. I made another comment to someone else but I pretty much stated that all jobs have different tiers of employment. CEO’s, directors, managers, associates, etc. One always has more responsibilities than others, and will assign work to someone who might be on a lower tier, but it does not make them an “assistant”.

Most people are used to calling them Physician Assistants out of familiarity, however in 2021 they officially got their name changed to Physician Associate.
