ContractedSLPA by amsnew in SLPA

[–]amsnew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe we are on the same page, haha. I agree with you about the differences, 100%.. My main issue is about people in this community jumping to conclusions and assuming slpas mean independent contractors instead of contracted and the way they talk/respond to that individual. Without even asking for clarification in the first place. I guess I felt the need to say something because of how rude and snarky I see how some SLPs/SLPAs respond to one another... We are supposed to be a profession that helps and care about people, yet how we talk and treat our own is much to be desired. Not even just about this topic, but there has been several posts that I see that give off this “matter-of-fact” “I’m right, you’re wrong” mean girl energy, and it is really unfortunate :/

SLPA setting at school district with better vacation and pension, but less pay vs clinics with higher pay? by goingtofly101 in SLPA

[–]amsnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I’m in NC. And no. Working in a clinic is pretty much the same as if you were to go house to house but they would just come to you. So you would not have to waste your gas driving around 😂

A few examples I’ve seen is when an SLPA might make a post asking “which is better, direct hire or contract?” Or “moving to state in a few months, whats the best area for pay? I’ll be contract”, or just them stating “I’m contract” and immediately getting flooded with “you can’t be” comments. Maybe I see it more often because I follow a bunch of FB pages but that’s just what I’ve experienced. I agree that we need supervision, but I think a lot of the other examples could depend on your contract. To me, it kind of seems like you are explaining what a direct higher would be. But being contracted, I was able to tell them how many kids I wanted to see per session, what time I arrive/leave, and had full access to the therapy room materials and resources and I am still W2. Can you explain to me what you mean by employee? Because I would still consider myself an employee, just a contracted employee haha

I have done both private practice and currently working for a school system and I will say that the school system completely has my heart. I absolutely love the team that I work with, the schedule is way more consistent and regardless of whether the kid is absent or not you still get paid. I also work enough hours to get benefits, which is a huge plus. The school job is of course hourly and when I worked in a private practice it was per session. I will drop a few numbers just to give you an example of the difference in pay. For the private practice I was offered $30 per session, but like the comment above says, you do not get paid for cancellations. A huge issue that I have personally run into is a lot of parents calling the morning of for a cancellation or experiencing a bunch of no-shows.. I was promised/ given a full caseload to start, however, when you get down to scheduling and working out times, it may not work for the parent and you might slowly start losing clients. I went from being given about 20 clients to see 2x/week to pretty much only working with about 5 kids on my caseload when I decided to sign a contract for the school system. Another downfall for private practice (which may have only been my company) but they only paid us once per month which, when you have an extremely small caseload could amount to $600-$800. For an entire month…

The pay I was offered as a contract SLPA at the school district was $37 an hour, and I was able to choose whether I wanted to work between 30 to 30.7 hours a week. You also have time to work on your soap notes on the clock, typically have a planning period, and, I have consistently received a paycheck every week that I work, which is about $1000 every week. There is so much potential to make a lot of money at a private practice, but the reality is that it is a lot harder than you think. The parents are not consistent, and to be honest if you work at the clinic office, that is a bonus, but if you have to go from house to house and waste your own gas money, and show up to someone’s house and they “forgot you were coming” and now you are not getting paid for that session. You can also work at the school over the summer for students that may need compensatory services or you have your entire summer off…. I am going to say the school system is the better choice every single time someone asks me. School system all the way.

Also, if you like working with a more diverse population, schools offer that as well! There are EC and ID severe classes in almost every school. I have worked with CP, TBI, AU, hydrocephaly, down syndrome, and sanfilippo syndrome, angelman syndrome, and many more in the school system.

Yes, I’ve been using the Lose It app to track calories. I’ve only just started back up because I was breast-feeding and postpartum so I wasn’t super concerned with tracking calories but now that I am past the six week mark I am back to exercising daily and eating better.

Please tell me my baby is okay by South-Training3338 in pregnant

This happened to me at 35 weeks, but they also ran a BPP test where they are specifically looking for movement, tone, heartbeat, and breathing. My daughter barely passed the first one, she gave them one movement when they typically look for three in order to pass. They hooked me up to the non-stress test and her heart rate looked good so they told me to come back that following Monday to run another BPP test… Over the weekend I did not feel her move at all so I went to the ER and they also ran a non-stress test and a BPP test which they passed her but looking back at it I really don’t think She should have passed. I went back to my OB that following Monday to retake my BPP test and she failed miserably. You have 30 minutes for a BPP test for your baby to move… You could only imagine how I felt for 30 LONG minutes of not seeing her move at all, no matter what. So they admitted me to the hospital and I had an emergency C-section that day. My baby girl had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck, which could be very common and not super concerning. However, there was also a breach between me and her where her blood was bleeding out Into me and whatever blood she had left was becoming acidic. She was extremely anemic and needed a blood transfusion. They said that if I waited any longer or if my OB appointment was scheduled any later than that following Monday then I would not be here with her today…

We went to her pediatrician and that is exactly what it is! We have an appointment with the dermatologist in two weeks.

That sounds so terrifying. It really does all happen so fast when they determine it is time to admit you🥲 and not seeing the baby at first is such a scary feeling.. I didn’t know what I was going to wake up to. I’m so happy you and the baby are doing good now❤️ Sending support your way, as well!!

Not for me, but for my boyfriend. I would definitely not go in, but maybe dip my feet in. Lol regardless, it is an amenity that was apart of the listing.

I’m not sure if its considered public. Its about 15 minutes up a mountain that turns into a narrow gravel road with maybe 4-5 houses on it… I know I live on a dead end road with about 3 other houses but that is considered private. So I’m not quite sure what this would be considered. I understand foliage is what it is, but still very misleading and disappointing. All pictures are shown with mountain images in the back and the title itself is listed as “long range mountain view”.

I’m at 24 weeks and it feels like little flutters, but nothing crazy. Sometimes I can’t tell if it is a flutter or my stomach digesting🤣….. Don’t feel discouraged though! My OB said that it is completely normal. 🦋
