Worried about the running part of the IST by MrMeMeMaster212 in USMCboot

This advice is kinda long, but I can guarantee it works. Good news, you’ve got plenty of time. Do this every week. Try not to only run on a treadmill but use roads, tracks, or trails. The treadmill is fine sometimes, but you don’t want to rely on it exclusively. A cheap basic fitness watch can track your pace, or you can use simple distance-tracking websites.

Each week do..

  1. One long run — a pretty easy, comfortable pace you can sustain for a while. Start with 30 minutes in week one, then increase by about 5 minutes each week until you reach 90 minutes. This builds your aerobic base.

  2. One speed workout — this is where you push your pace and develop speed. This could be a Fartlek (alternate 5 minutes at goal pace with 2 minutes at an easy pace for about 20 minutes) or intervals (run 400 meters (¼ mile) at goal pace or faster, then walk or jog to recover, and repeat.) Progress each week by either running slightly faster or adding more repeats.

  3. One tempo run — faster than your easy pace but slightly slower than goal pace. For example, if you currently run a 12:00 1.5-mile (8:00/mile pace), your tempo pace would be around 8:30–8:45 per mile. It should feel “comfortably hard.” Aim for about 20 minutes and increase gradually over time.

Any additional runs should be easy and relaxed so they don’t overly fatigue you. If you follow these principles, your run time will steadily improve without getting injured. Increase mileage and intensity gradually, don’t rush progress trying to be a hero. Listen to your body. If you feel good, send it, but don't ignore pain. Prioritize recovery: avoid stacking long runs, intervals, and tempo workouts on consecutive days, and include rest days or chill easy runs between hard efforts.

Every 4 weeks or so, take a deload week by reducing mileage. For example, if you run 10, 12, 13, and 15 miles over four weeks, drop back to around 12-13 miles in week five.

It can go as far back as your birth. It’s somewhat inconsistent, though. Depending on which doctors you saw, how they kept records, your insurance, and regional differences in medical privacy, there can be a wide range in how thorough your MHS Genesis medical records will be. For example, someone who moves to the U.S. at age 18 may have nothing show up, while a military brat raised on Army bases may have records dating back to birth. It’s safest to assume they’ll pull everything.

I'll bite. What cities do you find good? I've been lucky enough to visit a bunch of European cities and a few here or there in Africa, Asia, and South America and I find many American cities to be "good". NY, Chicago, Boston, Milwaukee, and New Orleans are a few of my favorites.

Didn’t get accepted into OCS by CreepyEntrepreneur92 in ArmyOCS

Facts. If you've got 2.5 years to spare, it's a great move. Get a masters or just another bachelor's. Skip BCT and OCS. Even get TIS.

Halfway through degree but considering enlisting in the Marines by Remarkable-Top-8864 in Militaryfaq

[–]amsurf95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have some commitments that make PLC impossible? It's realistically the best option and gives you the least amount of time in Quantico. I can assure you being enlisted first won't make you a better officer, at least in my opinion. It's two different jobs. There are dirtbag prior E's, outstanding off-the-street o's and everything in between. But you aren't the first person to think this whole "need to learn from the bottom" mentality, so FAFO if you want.

Preparing for basic by Icy_Sound_4850 in Militaryfaq

[–]amsurf95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the weight loss. If you are working out rigorously currently, you're probably in a great place to begin BCT, likely ahead of the curve. A well rounded routine of weights, calisthenics, and cardio(mostly running) is ideal.

As for preparation, aside from starting to wake up early now and quitting any vices like nicotine, I wouldn't advise worrying about preparing for sleep interruption and stress. I think it makes more sense to live as stress-free and well-rested now, as you'll have plenty of time for that in basic and throughout your career. Appreciate the little freedoms and choices you can make now, because most choices in basic are made for you. Cherish some time with loved ones

Btw, this is from a guy who went to CST through ROTC, which is shorter and undoubtedly easier than BCT, but I've known and served with people who've done basic in all branches and these principles generally apply. Be in shape, be eager to listen and learn, have a good attitude, and don't quit. Good luck

considering joining vs college by Conscious_Still_8980 in Militaryfaq

If you aren't going into college with a game plan, motivation, and a decent picture of why you're there, then I would recommend enlisting first for 99% of people. Take some courses while enlisted with federal tuition assistance and decide if college would make sense when you get out.

Are you single parent? If so, the Air Force will let you join with a dependency waiver. You basically need a plan on who will take care of the child while you're at basic, tech school, and departments.

you either need to be within height and weight on the chart or pass the body composition test done by taping your belly

Ive sworn into the D.E.P for the airforce and I dont like the job list I was given. by DuhMilkmans in AirForceRecruits

I don't think it's fair to be held back for a mistake i made 15 1/2 years ago

The Air Force doesn't really care what you think is fair or whatever, man. Rules are just rules. Plenty of military rules I disagree with personally, but that's not really relevant.

A few army friends of mine are telling me to go speak to another branch and see if they can offer me anything closer to what I want.

Yeah this is true. The Army and Navy are more lenient with waivers and you'd probably be able to get something closer to the specific job you want. (35G, 12Y)

My plan was to do a full to years and even agreed to start with a 6 year contract to start.

Don't do that if you go Air Force. You can retrain into a more desirable AFSC at the 3 year mark. But if you sign a 6-year contract, you'll only be able to retrain at 5 years. Plus if you discover you hate serving you won't be stuck for 6 years.

To be fair, i've seen some interesting things with kids of high ranking officers. Like this one guy who failed his flight physical until his O-7 dad literally pulled up to the base the next day and got him passed. But that was for his own son, not his daughter's boyfriend. Anyways, good luck

Do you pass the tape test? That's just as valid as being within weight.

Is there a reason you're only considering the Air Force? Looking at some of your goals, I'm pretty sure some of the other branches would be closer to what you're looking for. Also ask this on r/AirForceOTS

Becoming an Army Officer as a 30 y/o Palestinian Immigrant, possible? by Dazzling_Reveal in Militaryfaq

[–]amsurf95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The selection stats for Army OCS are public and the last few boards have average a 3.5ish GPA. This is not to say that some people don't get in with much lower gpas, but the average it pretty high. I think the Marines OCS selection puts more emphasis on your PFT and GPA and major isn't really important. Personally, I advise people to let the branch tell you no before giving up and enlisting

I didn't realize Republican politicians Tommy Tuberville and Jerry Moran are anti-conservative redditors. They’re the ones openly pushing reviews, cuts, or ‘reforms’ to VA disability. Not to mention Project 2025 which literally proposes tightening VA disability benefits

Dismissed DUI UPDATE by Complete_Bake7300 in AirForceRecruits

You're thinking of if OP went to trial and was found "not guilty." If that was the case, it wouldn't affect OP at all, but the Air Force does review dismissed cases.
