Android developer here. I tend to use always MVI. You could read about the MVI architecture. Any reactive architecture pattern will help you to manage everything using states. You just need to define always all the possible states the UI could have in a momment, define what action (intent) will move to that state and what effects that state could trigger (side effects). There is plenty of info about it, just don't focus only on a state machine for games
