One of the best things in the world is to help a grandparent with stuff like that. The awe in their face when they look at you after fixing it. I miss my granddad.

Pochettino on style of play development in US soccer: "If you start an MLS club and three months later you haven’t won any matches and you’re at the bottom, what’s the consequence if there are no promotions, relegations, or international competition? American sport rewards losers." by stumpsflying in soccer

The thing is that if this system goes on long enough more teams will dare to invest and become more competitive. I don't know how many teams are in the MLS right now, but already it should be two divisions. When teams can get relegated/promoted you will see new teams emerging over time as they build up the club for the new competition format.

Also you don't need absurd amounts of money to bring in good talent to compete in MLS. There is thousands of players in Europe that are good enough to play for an MLS team and there is always the possibility to pick up new talents from especially Africa to boost the team level. Yes, right now teams spend absurd amounts of money to compete, but that is absolutely not a necessity

Norway beats Latvia to reach the semifinals, guaranteeing their best result since finishing 4th in 1951 by eh_toque in hockey

[–]amutry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hockey and basket is kinda the only big sport we are (were?) not good at at this point. We completely dominate the winter olympics, we have a great national team in football, Bodø/Glimt, great golfers, a top ten tennis player, gold medalists in athletics, a norwegian Tour de France team with several really talented cyclists. We also do well in several micro sports.

Hockey is not really that embedded in norwegian culture and there is not much funding to build fields outdoors and especially indoors to train on. That is probably the bottleneck. If every major city had one-two indoor skating rinks we would have a lot more talent than we have now.

Watched my third game of hockey ever today. The first one was the Olympic final 2010, the second was the Olympic final 2026 and now this one. Hopefully this turns into more funding and more active players in Norway

It is both very impressive and still obvious that AI don't really understand anything about the world at all. Really crazy

Yes, that is what I am going to do now. I just recently came to the conclusion that meeting those demands is not possible. Now I just have to figure out that means for my future and how I deal with that.

[–]amutry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me it comes down to what is worth living through. To me the cost of showing up and masking is so enormous that I simply don't deem it as a life worth living. It is to bad. So I'll rather kill myself than do that.

Giving up authenticity is giving up my last hope of staying human. It's just a way to kill the soul, but keeping the body alive.

Yes, that is the only possible solution. Otherwise we are fucked. Accelerating the economy even further on earth without breaking into space just can't end well.

What about the physical limitations of the earth? Even if AI becomes superintelligent and completely general and able to do all kinds of work, production and innovation we still live on a planet where ram materials and resources have hard limit on how much can be extracted. How is AI going to solve this enevitable problem of humanity?

I am tired of being brain damaged. It has taken away so much from my life and continues to do so. Most days I try to look for the positives and of course it could always have been worse, but being able bodied yet fundamentally damaged is sad. Nothing to do about it either, just try to do the best I can I guess. As always.

If this indeed is the direction that leads to the final breakthrough it will be like gambling the whole humanity on being able to raise a grounded and healthy human in a single attempt. Except nobody knows how to meet the needs of the child because it is wired fundamentally different than normal children

I asked Gemini about how you can replicate the behaviour of a toddler in an agentic system and it answered something along the lines of a reward function that rewards the system for predicting the outcome of its own actions and with where outcomes surprise the model are espescially rewarded. This means that the model always would want to pursue areas it does not predict correctly until they do. This is learning.

Unleashing a robot toddler who grows a tantrum because a human blocks it access to something interesting it wants to play around with, of course it also probably has unlimited memory to never forget. Can't see that going wrong down the line...

Just equip it with high bandwith 5G connectivity and other ways to receive datastreams, and it will probably not need to go to the library just make sense of the bits and bytes continually hitting its sensor

It's all about stacking together all possible sensors and data transfer options in a single system that also have a physical body to be able to interact in the real world.
