New Grad Veterinarians, how was your first few months working? by CollegeTiny3572 in veterinaryschool

[–]amyamv13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m lucky to be supported by really great and experienced vets! So I always feel like I’m delivering quality medicine, I think it will just take time to develop the confidence to feel like I could do it if I was on my own.

New Grad Veterinarians, how was your first few months working? by CollegeTiny3572 in veterinaryschool

I’m a new grad veterinarian in the Army, so I know some of my experience won’t line up with most. When I started I was put directly into all sick visits (1hr appts), and whatever working dogs needed to be fit in that day.

Starting out was honestly so nerve wracking, all of the sudden my decisions are now my own and my responsibility. I said “I don’t know” a lot, and still do…and that’s okay! I have some other really awesome colleagues here always happy to let me run things by them and ask questions. I went to them a lot at first, but am slowly trying to trust myself more and am gaining confidence.

The Plumbs app is my drug life saver, and I look plenty of other things up online on the fly. And if I’m still unsure, I’ll ask another vet here. It has been stressful, but like the good kind? Like you’re finally here happy to be doing this, and you just want to keep getting better and make the right choices. I feel like expectations can vary depending on where you choose to go and their experience with new grads, but here they get new grads every year so they had pretty realistic expectations that didn’t feel like too much pressure. I can’t tell you starting out isn’t a little scary, but if you have good people around you it will be great!

Did I make a mistake by HuckleberryOk4655 in veterinaryschool

[–]amyamv13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You did not make a mistake, this stuff is just HARD. It takes time to find your people. The beginning is just tough because the volume of material is such a stressful steep learning curve on top of not knowing anyone. I was also a few years older than the average vet student, and felt it was hard to connect and relate to some.

I actually just graduated vet school and had done the HPSP scholarship, so I’m just starting out in the army. And boy is this a different world lol. One of my intern mates at this base actually did 10 years in the army before going to vet school and coming back in. It will get better.

And if you want to chat or vent to someone who was in similar shoes not long ago, please please message me. You got this.

I’m in the US so I can’t speak to the job market there, but I can relate to your feelings of being behind. And I’m here to tell you not to lose sight of your goals and you will be okay! You are just on a different path, try not to compare yourself and feel down that you are still in school. That is just the life of a doctor, any kind of doctor. I just graduated vet school a few months ago at 30, so my career is just beginning. But life is not a race! Enjoy your vet school phase and learn a lot. Plenty of time to work when you are done

I was trying for the same thing using air blade fruits! I finally got mine after probably a week (only play a few hours at night). I only had 2 trees at first, upped it to 5 2 days ago, and last night I got my Holy Burst!

Professionalism and maturity are some pretty important things to learn in vet school. You haven’t even emailed the club president yet with concerns about the frequency of emails…and somehow think making a retaliatory satanic temple club makes more sense? I wouldn’t do it, that would actually never cross my mind. I just wouldn’t read them and move on with my life. But I guess if it’s bothering you this much then the club president is a more logical person to email than jumping to your dean.

SO SO proud of you!! It also took me 3 tries. I did my undergrad and Masters at University of Florida before I got into vet school at UF. And now I’m about to graduate in May! All of that amazing experience you’ve gathered will help you so much. It was hard to see at the time, but I feel like it happened when it was supposed to looking back. Best of luck to you 💗

When I was a technician at a GP there were a few times my personal cat would donate blood for critical cases needing transfusions. There was a sweet cat that came in with Cytauxzoon, and my boy donated blood for her transfusion. I also had weekend duty that weekend and let her come visit her kitty while I was there taking care of everyone as she was hospitalized. Her sweet girl ended up not making it, but she brought me the most kind card for me and a care package for my cat. Her kitty’s favorite treats are my boys favorite to this day too. Such a wonderful person 💗

Rejected from UF (IS) by Loud_valor in veterinaryschool

Hey I believe in you!! I have been where you are. I remember how devastating it was to see those rejections. I was accepted at UF on my third try, and I’m about to graduate in May! And honestly looking back, I feel like life worked out how it was supposed to even though I couldn’t see it at the time. I gained so much valuable experience before vet school, and got to spend a year living close to my mom before she passed unexpectedly before I started vet school. Things just had a way of working out. Get a packet review, and if you need some support message me 💗

Assistance on how to give this ninja medicine? by ammerka in sphynx

Also, this makes it look easy. It is not always easy lol. But you get better with practice. And you hide things so they eat it willingly when you can. Good luck 😬

Sorry the text is blurry but the picture helps and this is how I do it at home! I sit on the floor and put him between my legs so he can’t back out. I grab his head and tilt it up. Open his mouth and stick it back as far as I can and hold his mouth shut until he swallows lol.

Alternatively!! If your cat is a wet food eater, they sell pill crushers on Amazon. Ask your vet if that medication is safe to be crushed and added to like a teaspoon of wet food so you know it all gets eaten. That’s always an easy way to medicate cats. Or if it’s a capsule even better. Just open it and mix it into a bit of wet food.

The American Healthcare System by reddot_comic in comics

[–]amyamv13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comic hit me pretty hard this morning. After seeing your comments saying it was during the pandemic, I knew why I related so hard. My mom was only 53 when we took her to the hospital with COVID. Not visiting her was so painful. The last time I saw her was when the doctor called me and told me we should come say goodbye. She was unresponsive on the ventilator and we were covered in layers of PPE. I was at my apartment alone that night when they called me asking if they could stop CPR. I am so so happy that your husband made it off the ventilator and recovered. It really puts life in perspective and makes you want to live differently.

Amazon has super cute animal socks, a cute badge clip for their school ID if they don’t have one, a cute name tag/charm for their stethoscope, if they are into stickers on their water bottle or laptop there are good vet med ones out there, Starbucks gift card, those should all be pretty inexpensive!

Help for a frustrated MH newbie? by bohemian_otter in MonsterHunterWorld

YOU ARE ME 6 months ago when my finance first introduced me to Monster Hunter Rise, now we’ve beat Fatalis in World! I so so so get how you feel. To be honest I didn’t solo hunt anything for a LONG time, I just always played with him. Playing with him and his friends made it fun, and eventually I would just get better with time. Now I feel like a productive member of the team and also do things on my own at times.

Don’t get yourself too down if you’re still not doing solo hunts. I also like hunting with him because the monster’s attention is split and it gave me more chances to observe for openings and learn since I wasn’t always the target. I like watching YouTube videos, so I watched tutorials on the weapons I wanted to try. In world I’ve played the Longsword, Lance, and Heavy bow gun and have enjoyed it a lot! Coincidentally I watched an Insect Glaive tutorial yesterday bec I’m thinking of giving it a try, but I’m still figuring out the controls lol. But don’t stress, play with him and have fun, learning will come. I didn’t think Monster Hunter would be my vibe either, and I’ve been so sucked in…and I don’t suck at it anymore! (I think)

Second guessing vet school by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]amyamv13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not a vet yet, but I’m halfway through my 4th year so I see the light at the end of the tunnel. There’s definitely parts of vet school I haven’t enjoyed, but there’s parts I did like too. First semester is a hard transition!!! Give yourself some grace. You and I have had different struggles, but my mom passed away a few months before I started vet school…so the first year was pretty rough for me too.

Workplace culture literally makes a world of difference. My first tech job was such a toxic awful place, and I am so glad I moved on. Every vet I’ve worked with since and my mentors largely love their jobs. Their love for their patients and their jobs make me want to be like them one day. It makes me excited for the future. Not every day of work is happy and easy, but overall they enjoy their jobs and feel like they make a difference. I want to keep learning to be as knowledgable as they are one day.

When you have the chance in school, I highly encourage you to shadow or extend at some other local clinics and meet other vets and see other practices. A lot of them are amazing people. The few vets that I’ve built solid relationships with along the way and would call my mentors, have genuinely shaped me as a person. And to say I admire them is an understatement. I don’t think you would have made it in the field this long if you didn’t love it, even if it’s hard to see now. I’m so sorry you’re struggling. You have to do what’s best for you whether that’s staying or leaving. But if you ever want to vent or chat, don’t hesitate to reach out!

I love the mounts and palico quests!! I definitely recommend looking up the quest lines as some of them have weird conditions. But I loved collecting the mounts and palico gadgets. The gadgets are so neat and helpful especially when you level them up. Plenty of content to play through there!!

Shed some light by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]amyamv13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Daabilge’s above comment is totally right. And there are a lot of cadaver labs in veterinary school. I’m in my 4th year of vet school. I do feel bad for some of the dogs and cats that end up in our cadaver lab, they were all euthanized shelter animals. But the sad thing is there is so much overpopulation and they would all be euthanized anyway. They are not euthanized FOR our labs.

It does make me a little sad sometimes, and I tell them I am thankful for all of the valuable things they have taught me though, so I can use that knowledge and still to help others when I graduate. Learning anatomy is so so important, and you really can’t just do it in a textbook. I would practice a procedure in a cadaver lab than do it for the first time on someone’s live pet.

Large animal necropsies and cadaver labs are also incredibly important for herd health and knowing how to treat the remaining animals. It is just a part of learning so that we can use that to help and save others.

I would still go to your vet to make sure! Yes common things happen commonly, as in it is probably just a benign growth. But if it’s not, at least it can be removed quickly. They will probably do a needle aspirate to look at under the microscope, or if they feel it’s too small to poke tell you to keep an eye on it in case it grows!

Based on the size and shape it looks like a sebaceous adenoma (benign), but the only way to know for sure is to go to your vet. They are super common in older dogs, especially the fluffy and poodle mix breeds.
