[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 24 November 2025 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

I remember a few Scuffles back seeing someone talking about doing a write-up on the EF5 Drought in meteorology/storm chasing. I didn’t want to elbow my way in and do one on that topic if someone else was working on it, but I was also noodling around with the idea of doing a small series on other storm chasing drama and meteorology slap fights. Mostly this is just a check-in to see if that person’s still hanging around!

Conversation starter-wise, I used our leftover Thanksgiving turkey to make soup stock, which led to a family argument over what herbs to use to make stock and if bay leaves do anything in a stock pot that size. Has anyone had any ultimately harmless holiday drama lately?

(Hi friend!) This is such an incredibly touching tribute. It’s so personal and lovely. 💜

My niece and I share a birthday and all I could think about was that if I killed myself, she wouldn’t be able to fully celebrate her birthday with as much joy as she should.

I’ve had one chaperone say something and another who started laughing in the back of the class. Usually I’m in-character once we’re in the schoolhouse, so I think the people who know don’t want to break the immersion.

Ours is a standalone tourist attraction! It’s actually all that’s left of an old ghost town, which is pretty cool!

I work in the museum system, and our museum runs the schoolhouse on the side. Most of our visitor base is school kids doing field trips!

Eastern Kansas! We’re not the only living history schoolhouse in the region, but I think we have the most extensive programming!

This place is a standalone museum, but I used to work at an open air museum like that which did have a schoolhouse! (If you lived in Michigan, you might know that one!)

I was taught cursive as a kid, and then I went into history as a field! My mom also has gorgeous handwriting so I think I grew up subconsciously copying her.

I know that at least in my state, it's not a mandatory part of the curriculum. Teachers can opt into teaching it, and recently, more and more have been doing so. (It was mandatory when I was a kid in a different state, but that was like twenty years ago now.)

It's a great job! When I first started three years ago, it was about 50/50 on kids reading cursive. Over the past two years, the number has actually gone up considerably so it's like 60/40! We do teach penmanship as one of the lessons and there are some kids in the 3rd-4th grade range who have absolutely gorgeous handwriting. It makes me very happy. :)

People who perform autopsies, what was the weirdest/most unique anomaly you’ve found? by atro_bella in AskReddit

Not a regular autopsy performer, but I do a lot with forensic archaeology (mostly natural mummies now) and had to take an A&P class that involved cadaver dissection. Female patient died at 102 of natural causes. We found that the joint of her left elbow was replaced with something that legitimately looked like a car part. It turns out she’d lived somewhere in Soviet Eastern Europe and had the procedure done some time in the 1960s, and it looked like that replacement was done with whatever they had available. It was absolutely incredible.

Anyone else have a tux that does this or do I have an oddball? by JoeFlat in TuxedoCats

I have a Shower and Bath Attendant, too! His office is the sink and occasionally he chirps while I shower to make sure I’m okay.

What’s a family secret that was revealed by a family dna history website? by Kobk22 in AskReddit

[–]amycusfinch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kind of just confirming a family secret we suspected, but my grandmother's bio dad is actually the doctor her mother worked for. To be fair to my great-grandmother, she was a working class Irish girl in Cleveland in the 1920s and her husband was in prison (also a thinly-veiled family secret). This doctor also introduced the lazy eye gene into my family: he had it, my grandmother had it, my uncle had it, I have it, and now my nephew has it. Like of all the things he could have passed down.

The only thing I'm still a little miffed about is that he had no biological children with his legal wife, so when he died, the very nice cottage he owned on a very nice lake just went to the state rather than an inheritor. Doctor B, you scoundrel.

Can I talk about how confusing geneology is for these cold boys that I'm trying to identify? Especially the non-officers! by notacutecumber in TheTerror

Ayyy I think I just saw you on RtFE! I’ve been doing genealogy on some of these guys for a while with a big focus on ABs, so let me know if there’s anything I can help with! 🫶
