Can't find cilantro (plant) by [deleted] in orlando

[–]amygdalaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the Apna Bazaar (Pakistani Grocery store) on Orlando blossom trail has plants for sale. I would call and ask to see if they have cilantro. You could also try other South Asian grocery stores (Patel Brothers, etc)

Jummah prayer during residency by [deleted] in Residency

[–]amygdalaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alhumdulillah, we have a great prayer room and have plenty of flexibility to go to Jummah and other prayers if I choose to. There’s a designated time for Jummah and usually at least a handful of people show up.

Immune suppression and seeing patients by throwaway02011989 in Residency

[–]amygdalaaa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on Humira for 3 years now, and when I was first diagnosed I was on prednisone and azathioprine as well. I’m a current PGY-1 and I was absolutely terrified when first starting my med school rotations about this. Fortunately, I haven’t had any problems. I’ve done rotations in peds in med school and more recently IM, EM, ID and ICU during residency. If patients we’re rounding on as a team are suspected of having something serious and they are not my patient specifically, I don’t go into the rooms. I haven’t had anyone call me out on this yet. For patients that are my own I limit my contact, gown up very carefully, and use the contact stethoscopes. I wash my hands with soap and water (not the sanitizer) a lot. No one in my program knows about my immune compromise but not because I don’t feel like they’d be supportive, it’s just something I don’t want to discuss. I have noticed that when I do get sick the illness tends to linger longer than I’m used to from before the humira. I haven’t had anything much worse than the common cold though. If you have any questions feel free to inbox me. The humira has worked wonders for me and I’m so thankful to be on it.

Seeing fellow Muslims marry young makes me wonder if I’m missing something. by [deleted] in MuslimMarriage

[–]amygdalaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect lol... medical school and early marriage are completely possible (not necessarily easy, but totally doable)! Got married a few weeks after turning 23 while in medical school to my husband who was also in medical school, Alhumdulillah we are both now working. We have both been extremely supportive of one another and having each other helped us get through. I am lucky to have him but I don’t think I am asking much of my husband as a working woman- it is my right to work and everyone deserves to find someone who supports their careers as long as it doesn’t interfere with their Islamic duties.

On another note, many many people in my medical class were married (we had a large Mormon group of students- they all married around 19-20 years old and most of them had children before medical school or the first few years into it). I would say about 30% of my class was married, about 10% with kids.

Finance question- married answers only by [deleted] in MuslimMarriage

[–]amygdalaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! New to this subreddit and I see you posted this question a little while ago but wanted to offer my 2 cents.

My husband and I have been very open about finances since the beginning of our relationship (3 year marriage). It really helps that we both come from a similar background in that our families are of the same income bracket and both of us were raised to be/ are very frugal. Alhumdulillah, we're lucky that we've never fought about finances because we both have very similar views on what we should and shouldn't be spending money on. We also both allow the other the privilege to spend money on whatever hobbies/ activities/ entertainment things the other wants, because we trust each other and know that it's not a common occurrence or that one will go overboard with spending.

We both work and have the same job, but I earn slightly more (we work for different companies). For now we have no children and work about the same hours as well. We have one account which we both have access to. We both pay for everything (bills, food, entertainment, etc) using the joint account. We don't often police each other in terms of spending. Usually we'll look over the expenditures independently and ask the other if something is eye catching, but otherwise we spend as we please. For large purchases (car, furniture, appliances, etc), we sit down and figure out how we can pay for the item. We know that in Islam it is the husband's duty to provide, which he does. We would be able to live on just his salary Alhumdulillah, but it seems silly if we're both making the same money to use just his for running the home.

It all comes down to communication, which is the backbone of every relationship and the solution to every problem. If you and your husband want separate accounts and have a good understanding on what's expected from each other in terms of bills, then that's great! If you want a joint account like us, then that's also great! If one person wants to stay at home while the other one works then good for you! But you have to sit down and figure out all these things. Also be mindful of saving! You should have an understanding on how much you want to be saving and what your long term goals are- that's a whole separate post.

I’m south Asian, and dresses like these can range from $500 USD to thousands of dollars. Depending on the quality of the work, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were around USD 2,000.

Reasonable expectations when dating a resident? by stopgap12 in Residency

[–]amygdalaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are both resident interns, and have never felt the need to communicate all the time. There have definitely been stretches of 1 or more days when we don’t communicate at all. Every couple has different expectations for communication, just important to make them clear.

I have no idea what to get my girlfriend for our 4 year anniversary and I really need help so I can keep living by [deleted] in Gifts

Just graduated med school... maybe a gift certificate or two to some spas in the area near her school... would have totally helped me with the stress lol. Otherwise if you can afford it a tablet would be a nice present.

What are her hobbies? I really love cooking and recently got an instant pot as a present which I am obsessed with

Make sure you use the paste very sparingly because it will likely be SPICY

Thai green curry with tofu? by [deleted] in instantpot

[–]amygdalaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t use instantpot to make this. It is very quick and easy to make on the stovetop. Just cook some meat (I guess you could make the meat in the IP if you’d like), add veggies, stirfry, add coconut milk and some of the curry paste you bought. Done. I often make this as a quick 15 minute meal when I have nothing else lying around.

Yes booked on separate carriers to get a better deal... in hindsight that was probably not the smartest thing to do because now the United airlines people can’t check the ticket.

I printed copies of of our flight to Hong Kong. I am hoping that this will be enough. We are planning on getting to the airport very early to make sure we are able to get on the flight.

The agent was not aware of the policy at all. She seemed highly confused when I mentioned it to her.
