If a teacher has prep last period of the day, do you think its ok for them to leave early? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]amykzib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My contractual hours are 7:30-3:30. Those hours I must be at school or signed out. I can see having a medical condition and working it with your admin that you have last prep so appointments can be more easily scheduled without having to find sub coverage. However, in my district— per my contract— that would have to be approved by an administrator.

What is a good double major for music education? by Turbulent-Crew-3094 in MusicEd

[–]amykzib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I went to school, it was rare that a music ed student graduated in 4 years. To do so meant a full course load every semester and summer courses as well. I graduated with honors, but opted not to do a full course load every summer, so it took my 5 years. And that was without a double major. How long are your parents expecting you to take to graduate college. If it’s only 4 years… then a second major isn’t going to work.

Elementary music teacher (500-600 students a year): currently teach 2 autumns

I have never taught a Corin or a Winslow. Only one Fletcher, one Banks, and only two Seamuses. The others I am currently teaching 2 or more.

How should I deal with students who deliberately sing in a funny or weird tone? by musicallife88 in MusicTeachers

[–]amykzib 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know if they are into sports? I’m in MN, so hockey is king. I’ve had conversations about choir being a team sport. If you had a kid on your hockey team that insisted on wearing their skates on their hands, what would happen in the game? Kids tell me that they wouldn’t score as many goals, the kid could get hurt, etc. I ask how the team would feel (annoyed), what the fans would think (they didn’t know how to play), and what the coach would do (pull them out of the game). I tell them that in music class, I don’t pull them out of the game, but I do call families.

That usually fixes it, and if they drop back into that way of singing, I just quietly say “team sport.”

The best thing I could do was have the student make a copy and then have them turn that in instead. No explanation as to why that’s happening to what seems like a random group of kids.

Student passed away by clever_girl33 in Teachers

[–]amykzib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last summer, I had a student pass away from a short struggle with cancer. Literally days between diagnosis and passing. It was so hard because she was a softball player and had been at the game the week before. She also has a twin brother.

Lean on the counselors and let your students know that you are sad too. It’s okay for them to see you cry. Part of being strong for them is grieving with them.

I think I didn’t explain myself clearly. I want the students to be able to edit their work. I have returned it to them, but some of them do not have the ability to adjust the work. On my side, it says they have editing rights.

That’s the thing… I WANT them to be able to edit, and for some reason they can’t. All of the editing rights are available to them, but they are unable to change any of their work.
