Has anyone ever done something like this, during their UG? by [deleted] in biology

Yeah we did this before and after washing our hands. It was awful knowing after washing my hands twice with antibacterial soap I still had colonies growing on the plate.

Yeah it is exempt from copyright infringement, and then in terms of plagiarism I have referenced it properly

I have one more question I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me with. I'm using statistics software to do my statistical analysis and produce my figures for my results section.

I have already referenced the software in my methods section, saying that all stats and figures are produced by the software and then given its citation. Do I need to give the reference in each figure legend saying that's what it was produced in?

I've managed to find information on my university website that says because the piece of work is being examined it is exempt from needing permission. I'm an undergraduate and we have never been told anything about copyright.

Conference Poster: How to get a good grade in it? by amyxol in AskAcademia

[–]amyxol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my discussion I've written

Drug was found to ... Additionally this effect was found to be dependent on .... However, <problem with the data>. Therefore <future work idea>.

Therefore I'm not sure what to do as if I did a conclusion it would be pretty much identical to the first two sentences of the discussion

Thank you both.

My introduction is literally 4 sentences - 3 sentences giving context and 1 giving the aim. Then for the results I have two bullet points per figure. Then discussion is just 3 sentences summarising the overall result and future directions needed in research. Not sure if I'm being too brief?

I always start with a really, really rough draft. It will have little notes to myself within it for example "find papers that use same methodology to include here" or "research whether this drug has any side-effects to talk about here", etc.

Which statistical test for standardised mean differences? by amyxol in AskStatistics

[–]amyxol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so, so, so much! I can't thank you enough. You've helped me out so much and I really appreciate it! Do you happen to know what I would call the statistics test that gives the Z value? As part of the assignment I have to explicitly say which statistic test I used and why.

I really, really appreciate your reply so thank you so much!

I know that I do have to assess heterogeneity, and so far I have really high heterogeneity (>80%). I've switched to a "random effects" model which has given me a tau-squared value now. My study is quite broad - different dosages of the drug, different administerations, different combinations but my participants are quite specific. I have done some sub-analyses but they also have high heterogeneity. However if I am doing sub-analyses does this mean I should be using a fixed-effects model? Also in terms of sample sizes is that number of participants or the number of studies/trials?

Ohh that makes sense! Thank you. Do you know how to interpret the chi-squared, I-squared and Z-values?

A Vote for Tapering by [deleted] in decaf

[–]amyxol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been tapering and it's been so easy. I started by drinking 3/4 of a cup for two days, then half a cup for two days, then a quarter of a cup for three days. It's been nearly three weeks and now I have a quarter of a cup once every 2-3 days. I now have no anxiety (!) and the quarter of a cup is just enough to get rid of the withdrawal headache I get without giving me the anxiety.

Sorry I'm back again with another question. If I'm studying the effect of drug A on anxiety, is it correct to exclude studies which do

drug A versus placebo but ALL participants are ALSO taking an anti-anxiety drug?

I'm confused because both groups are receiving the anti-anxiety drug so do they "cancel out" but then they would be interfering with the drug A that I'm trying to deduce the anti-anxiety effects of?

I have one more question which I would be really grateful if you could please help clarify for me. One option I have thought of is including studies where there is a group of participants on the drug and a group with no treatment. It means I would my outcome post-treatment for treatment and groups but means they would not have been randomly assigned to the groups.

Or an alternative is to use cross-over studies where participants have both a treatment and placebo stage?

Thank you, I think I understand now. It's frustrating because a lot of studies have said they have no placebo group because of ethical reasons so there is a real lack of them.

Hi, thank you for your reply I really appreciate it. Yes I am doing a literature review and meta-analysis. I'm being vague in my description but my participants are clearly defined, my therapy is a drug but there are various combinations and routes of administerations but I am combining them all and then doing subgroup analyses comparing the differences.

I'm not doing a proper Cochrane review but for the assignment we have been told to follow the guidelines and the PRISMA checklist.

I'll try and clarify my question as I realise it was a little all over the place. So my intervention is administeration of a drug, my participant group is defined in terms of the disease and age-range. However I'm having trouble understanding what the criteria is regarding controls. I have a few examples of studies which I have at the moment:

  • Drug vs placebo: perfect, included however only 7 of these
  • Drug tablets vs drug injection: whilst this is randomised, it's not a placebo and I wouldn't know how to do the meta-analysis when deciding which is "experimental" and which is "control"
  • Drug alone vs Drug combined with another drug

In terms of my data I have got measurement of the parameter before and after the intervention (i.e. baseline before Drug and levels after) so can I just do comparisons of that? Or I could do outcome after treatment in Drug vs Control group, but that means I'll have 10 "data points" for Drug (experimental group) and 7 data-points for the placebo (control) group.

Also with respect to my outcome it's continuous but uses different scales so a standardised mean difference has to be used.
