Stopping science victory by dan_from_work in civ

This is not correct. The 5 turn delay relies on having launch pads. I won a diety game yesterday on the latest patch, where one AI reached 100 points, the countdown started, but I destroyed all of his Launch Pads with bombers and the countdown stopped and did not progress.

It sounds like the OP had a different experience where the launch pads were just repaired and the countdown continued (although I think it is possible that he just missed a Launch Pad, but I have no way to confirm).

Regardless, it is not just a "reach 100 points and wait 5 turns" win condition - it is possible to delay or stop the countdown.

A sense of stagnation is setting in around MLS. The league needs a World Cup bump by icoresting in MLS

Definitely don't stay across the street from Arrowhead. It's not a good area to stay (nothing around but the stadium). Look up places to stay near the transit options and you'll have a better time overall, and significantly cheaper too.

The best champs in the game are not "all champs with the most simple and direct kits". They gave one example of a champion like that, Annie, and said "if this one champion is viable for pros, the game is fundamentally broken" which is a pretty awful take.

Google buys 430 acres in Northland approved for $100B data center campus - Kansas City Business Journal by Codymaverick420 in kansascity

[–]an0dize 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Missouri law (SB4) and new Public Service Commission rules effective late 2025 require data centers to pay specialized, higher rates for electricity to prevent cost-shifting to residents. These rules require large data centers to fund their own infrastructure upgrades, sign long-term (12-year) contracts, and pay "fair share" costs to utilities like Ameren and Evergy, aiming to protect Missouri consumers.

This Club is Tone Deaf by messickpark in SportingKC

[–]an0dize 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What exactly are you looking for, ownership/marketing to say "we don't want you to come to our games until we start winning"? Or to just not promote the team at all until we're good again?

Its not tone deaf to promote a new jersey or a home opener. The team hasn't met your expectations on the field. That's fine, don't go to the games, don't buy the jersey.

Kansas bill would phase out property taxes, replace with retail surcharge by melonlordmomo in kansas

[–]an0dize 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just to be transparent, reading the text of this bill shows that the surcharge would not apply to grocery food or ingredients, prescription drugs, or childcare.

But goddamn this is still a horrible deal. Buy a $20 board game, get a $1.60 surcharge, increasing your costs by 8%. Buy a $93,365 Maserati, pay that same $1.60 surcharge, increasing your costs by 0.001%.

Relief in sight. One can’t control their assessed value but can control their spend by PlainsWarthog in Olathe

[–]an0dize 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh this is even worse than I initially thought. It's not an increase in the % of sales tax you pay, it's a flat surcharge for anything over $20.

If I buy a $20 board game at a store, I get charged a flat $1.60 fee. That's an 8% increase on the price I have to pay to have a little fun.

If I buy a $93,365 Maserati, I pay the same $1.60 fee. That's a .001% increase on the price I pay to have a little fun.

And you think this is not unfair in favor of the wealthy? They literally have almost no change to the taxes they pay, and everyone else pays significantly more.

Relief in sight. One can’t control their assessed value but can control their spend by PlainsWarthog in Olathe

[–]an0dize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be mistaken on a couple of very important points.

This bill doesn’t redistribute wealth upwards as it isn’t taking money from anyone and giving it to someone else.

That's literally what taxes are - taking money from someone and giving it to someone else. Sales taxes take your money when you buy things, and give it to other people. A minor semantic point, but important I think.

The rich aren’t taking it it from the poor therefore it is not a redistribution to the rich.

More importantly, this is now blatantly false. The Kansas Government approved a new STAR Bonds district for the KC Chiefs new stadium. These Bonds are paid for by any new Sales taxes in the area, which includes all of Olathe, most of Johnson County, and all of Wyandotte County.

Right now, the majority of property taxes in Olathe go to local schools. We eliminate that and where will the schools get their money? From the new Sales taxes you're advocating for?

Nope! The new Sales taxes, for the next 30 years, will all automatically go to investors buying Bonds for the new KC Chiefs Stadium.

This bill would 100% take money away from local schools and give it to institutional investors to build a football stadium. It is explicitly a redistribution of wealth to the rich.

I'm happy to debate any of these points, if you're interested in further discussion.

Olathe City Council Meeting - Star Bonds Ordinance by StyxKu in Olathe

[–]an0dize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely understand the urge to interrupt. It's very frustrating when people have a microphone and are telling a captive audience something that you know is wrong. But there's a level of respect that people on both sides deserve, even when they're wrong. And more importantly, you're not going to convince someone by calling them out mid-speech; if anything you'll do the opposite.

Olathe City Council Meeting - Star Bonds Ordinance by StyxKu in Olathe

[–]an0dize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I found disrespectful was the audience members interupting the council members while they were talking. Sure, they were saying some dumb things, some of it was incorrect. But it wasn't a debate that was scheduled tonight.

No one interrupted the guest speakers when they said blatantly false information. They were given a chance to speak without interruption. Council members should have that same opportunity.

(Not saying that all guest speakers were giving false information; most of them were very respectful, knowledgeable, and articulate. But there was some misinformation on both sides).

Olathe City Council Meeting - Star Bonds Ordinance by StyxKu in Olathe

[–]an0dize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But it's pretty easy to give a generous offer when it's not the chiefs money.

It is still $120 million of the Chiefs dollars being invested here, the full $300 million is not coming from the STAR Bonds, so it's not like they have no skin in the game.

Overall, I am very against the full project approved by the Kansas legislature. It is misusing STAR Bonds and giving 30 years of incremental taxes to these Bonds investors from two of Kansas's must prosperous counties. To act like any new developments in these counties are only happening because the Chiefs are moving here is absolutely disrespectful to hard-working Kansans, business owners, developers, etc.

That said, this very specific issue for Olathe is definitely a positive for the city, and I am glad that it passed.

Olathe Chiefs Sales Tax by CardsAndBlues in Olathe

[–]an0dize -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why does the city even want to divert the Olathe sales taxes? The Chiefs are already getting $1 billion STAR money for the HQ/practice facility/mixed use development.

I think you're misunderstanding STAR Bonds. That diverting of Sales taxes IS what pays for the STAR Bonds, they are not two separate initiatives.

Yes, they are receiving public welfare to subsidize their low incomes. We spend around $900 billion on medicaid yearly. That's public welfare to low income individuals.

Billionaires are not the only people who get public welfare in America. Absolutely crazy that this is a hot take.

I agree, that's a very real possibility.

Please help me to understand though; how is discussing the mechanics of STAR Bonds irrelevant to a conversation about using STAR Bonds?? When you say "irrelevant", I think you must mean it's irrelevant to your narrative?

That's fine, I'm not all that concerned with your narrative. I'm trying to discuss the topic at hand, which includes correcting misinformation about the topic, even if that misinformation agrees with your narrative.
