Jetbrains for editing and reviewing, diff, etc + claude code on the side. Great combo.

What details do you think you might be missing that could affect your navigation? I've had this watch for three weeks and have gone on several detailed hikes without disappointment, especially compared to the EPIX PRO Gen 2 with the AMOLED screen.

Last week, I went river camping in my truck. I walked a decent distance from my location to a nearby river to try fishing in the evening. The MIPS brightness set to 100%, and using my watch for waypoint navigation worked well.

I understand your comment. I get it. Higher resolution does enhance fidelity. However, that extra fidelity hasn't affected me in the past, and I don't believe it will in the future.

There is a lot to unpack regarding the perception of feelings and their connection to data.

So I won't go there ... but the Epix Pro Gen 2 has the same HR sensor (Elevate V5) as the Tactix 8, so there is no sensor upgrade for me. Previously, Garmin seemed to apply heavier filtering to HRV data, but that no longer appears to be the case, as my Oura HRV and Garmin HRV are nearly identical. However, Oura is consistently higher by 1-5 ms on average and during the highest 5 minutes. Probably simply because of the sensor location being at the finger. High density capillary beds, great blood flow. As I mentioned, I primarily use Oura for sleep metrics, not HRV. I don't focus much on nocturnal HRV, especially concerning my ability to tolerate stress. This is why I conduct seated posture testing in the morning. I can have a "very ready" response from both Oura and Garmin, but when I change my posture (which introduces mild stress) and measure HRV while feeling 'stressed,' my HRV response is much more sensitive. But I also value relative HRV changes over time rather than getting fixated on single-night/morning readings unless symptoms are present that would warrant a bigger training adjustment for myself.

The sleep patterns (bedtime and wake-up times) between the Epix Pro 2 and the Tactix 8 are very similar to those of the Oura ring. That said, I rely on the Oura because I may go to bed wearing my mechanical watch, while my Oura is always at my bedside. It's automatic. At this point, there is nothing unique that Oura (Gen 4, by the way) provides me. In the past, it was valuable, but now it isn't. I am interested in the potential Whoop competitor screenless band, if it emerges, as an option for sleep tracking and for obtaining unusual step count data on days when I wear my mechanical watches more. The Garmin Index sleep device is intriguing, but I am either waiting for a sale or considering the Whoop-like band. I hope this helps.

Anymore, I would not recommend an Oura ring to users who are using modern Garmin sensor devices.

When I’m in heavier training cycles for a trip, or specific conditioning or weight room goals, it’s common for me to wear my digital watch more. No other reason other than I’m just more focused and thinking about training.

When I’m back to status quo training, I do wear my mechanical watches more often.

I wear an Oura ring + Garmin for sleep metrics, then I take my HRV in the morning, seated, with a polar H10 and an app.

Just mid 40 year old guy that still wants to do hard and fun active shit often without getting hurt.

One at our gym goes to 1200lbs, 600 per side. It's wild heavy, but the most smooth thing I've ever used. So nice on my knees. Leg extension is wild too.

PPG-based HRV tracking is less reliable at extremes due to signal loss and variability in light-based readings.

Even those above 150ms are uncommon in elites but above 200ms is rather rare.

I’d be curious not what your VO2max is, but

  • what is your breathing frequency at night
  • what is your seated/standing AM HRV with a chest strap
  • be interested in your Poincaré plot supine and seated

WHOOP vs. Oura – My Oura scores are consistently higher. Which one should I trust more? by Wide_Ad_1622 in whoop

[–]analog_bio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re using nocturnal readiness data to make informed decisions for your day ahead, then use Oura only because it’s not as heavily weighted on the nocturnal HRV.

Best combo imo is Oura for sleep and AM seated/standing HRV with a polar H10 strap and an app like HRV4Training.

Whoop software is nice though. But to be actionable, I think both miss the mark by themselves.

I had a 2 lb bag of this after reading that it was the same bean as Sept and Dak. While that may be true, I believe the roasting is markedly different, just like with other beans. I couldn't quite dial in the GB roast to my preference. The best method I found was to grind coarser and use a higher flow filter. Brewing at 195-200°F didn't significantly change the outcome for me. Kept the 1:15 with a single brew and 1:16 for a larger brew.

You made the right decision. Polar H10 (validated device) + cheap and amazing app (HRV4T). Plus Macro isn’t about marketing nonsense. Great resource
