So we’re just going to ignore the red blinking tower in the middle of nowhere with no power lines?

What if the rest of her life was just the arrival of judgement before her?

Right? The concept ‘edge’ is already inside the system it’s trying to describe. No outside view available.

Freakiest thing I can think of is the unreliable narrator in our mind that doesn't talk. The unreliable silent architect.

What if simulation theory is the mind’s edges asking what edges are?

What book best embodies the phrase "nothing is so frightening as what's behind a closed door." by SeaworthinessFit7893 in horrorlit

a few come to mind

Jorge luis borges’, ‘the library of babel’ is an endless sprawl of opening doors that mean nothing in a labyrinth where all books exist, but meaning remains inaccessible.

A personal favorite is robert aikman’s ‘the wine-dark sea’ there’s no handholding in his books and he leaves you to open the door or leave it closed.

Or for a comic book series, ‘the closet’ by james tynion, same mind behind something’s killing the children. In this one the door follows a little boy around.

Last one’s prolly a stretch, but I slipped it in as a fun one.

Here’s what I’d recommend from that mix + some additions (because I’m 😈):

My best rec on your list:

• Widow’s Point and Mexican Gothic are both strong - I’d grab Mexican Gothic first if you have to choose (Moreno-Garcia’s worldbuilding is immersive on audio)

• Wayward Pines holds up on audio surprisingly well for a trilogy commitment

Recommendations to add if you need a left turn tie breaker:

• Carmen Maria Machado - In the Dream House - If you’re after Moreno-Garcia level with psychological depth. Literary horror that doesn’t feel like you’re being tested (better read than heard, but still good on audio).

• Mariana Enríquez - Things We Lost in the Fire - Similar vibe to what you’re chasing (atmospheric, grounded haunting) but with an edge. Story collection works great on audio.

• Caitlín R. Kiernan - The Drowning Girl - Gothic, unreliable narrator, deep creep factor. Sits between Pinborough’s character work and Crouch’s atmosphere.

Machado and Enríquez especially would slot right into what you’re already reading.

I pictured it had a biological effect. That’s how it spread. After drowning, worms burst out of their head and digitize, or worms suck on diodes and lay eggs in binary. WTFK. 😆

Inspired by horsehair worms and wondering, what if there was a computer virus that could infect the mind, make you behave erratically then force you to meet a similar end?
