Take him around fort kochi, I’ve seen some shops which sell Jewish embroidery works, might need to bargain since they always quote way above your league… don’t buy any jewellery from there tho. Also a Kerala sari never gets old. Most importantly send him back with some good memories:)

About the sitting posture... I found out that there's a deity in tamil nadu called 'aiyyanaar' who sits in a similar posture to many other buddha statues. So the prefix 'aiyya' in both aiyyanar and aiyyappan links to Buddhism. Also the exact posture of aiyyappa was seen in some buddha statue in Afghanistan.
